Her choreography has been featured at Carnegie Hall, Disney World, national ACDA conventions and MENC workshops. A noted clinician, adjudicator and director, she has presented and adjudicated more than 800 workshops and festivals. Valerie and her husband Tom, direct the annual Butler Showchoir Showcase each summer in El Dorado, Kansas. Her best-selling books include favorite team-building activities and fun games.These how to books cover every aspect of staging a choir to auditioning, hiring a choreographer, dancing with style, recruiting males and dealing with stage moms At Butler, Valerie directs the Butler Headliners Showchoir, the Smorgaschords Barbershop Quartet, co-directs the 120-voice Butler Concert Choir and teaches tap dance, choreography, and private voice. Honored as a Butler Master Teacher, Valerie is in demand as a motivational speaker for numerous events. In her spare time, Valerie teaches at the Kansas Dance Academy; directs the Lutheran Church Choir; is on the Music Theatre of Wichita board of directors; and does region commercial and TV work,
Belcik, Higher Ed, Continued after the first performance, composer Hans Krása, who was Jewish, was transported to the Terezin concentration camp, where he rewrote the piece from memory. In 1944, the opera was performed by imprisoned Jewish children for the Red Cross in an attempt to impress the international representatives. Later that year the opera was recorded as part of a Nazi propaganda film. As soon as filming was completed, Krása, Adolf Hoffmeister (the librettist), and the cast and orchestra were transported to Auschwitz, where most were immediately gassed. It’s a great time to rekindle friendships, trade ideas and tricks of the trade, and recharge your teaching batteries all at the same time. As my service to OMEA as Band Vice–President ends, I want to take this opportunity to thank those of you that have helped me along the way in my twenty–nine years of teaching in Oklahoma. Had it not been for the willingness to provide help from so many directors I have met and befriended over the years, I know I wouldn’t have experienced success in a profession that I value greatly. OMEA WEAR YOUR BADGE AT CONVENTION Gay Lynn Allen Exemplary Teacher, Continued Schools for five years, she then moved to Kingston Schools. She served as Circle the State with Song region coordinator in 2003. The following year, she served as the CTSWS State Chair and then was Chair of the All-OMEA Children’s Chorus. Her nomination to Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers by a student, she sees as one of her greatest honors. During her career, she directed children’s community choirs, numerous children’s summer musicals, and a performing hand chime choir. Allen states, I love working with my students and expect high achievement from every one of them. I have learned that you should always encourage and help your students to set and achieve high goals. What you expect from your students is what you will get. Expect little and you will get little. Expect the best from them and you can get the best. Time spent in hard work can help them, and you, reach the best they can be. We should never settle for mediocrity.
