A partial rostrum of Propristis schweinfurthi
dames, 1883 was collected in the Bartonian
strata of northeastern Spain. The specimen
represents the second record of the species
from Europe, and the second occurrence
of a sawfish (Mesopristis osonensis Farres,
2003) from the Vic-Manlleu Marls Formation.
In spite of some evidence to the contrary,
Propristis probably preferred ecological conditions
similar to extant sawfishes, i.e., inhabiting
nearshore tropical to subtropical seas
with occasional excursions into freshwater.
The fist fossils of the tholochthys larval
stage of a chaetodontid from the lower Oligocene
of frauenweiler are described, along with
two less well-preserved probable tholochthys
from the lower Oligocene Menilite-Formation
of Prezemysil. The fossils are compared with
tholochthys larvae of the extant genus of
Chaetodontidae to which they are most similar,
namely Chaetodon.
bothriolepidid placoderms (Pisces, Placodermi,
The bothriolepidid placoderms Bothriolepis
markovskii sp. nov. from the southern Ural
Mountains and Bothriolepididae gen. et sp.
indet. from the Kuznetsk Coal Basin are described.
The new species from the southern
Ural Mountains has a high dorsal crest, resembling
in this character Scottish B. cristata
Traquair, Australian B. gippslandiensis Hills
and B. cullodenensis Long, and B. heckeri
Lukševičs from the Novgorod Region. The
bothriolepidid from the Kuznetsk Coal Basin
is similar to Bothriolepis from central Poland
and Livnolepis from European Russia. The
new finds expand the diversity and distribution
of crested bothriolepidid antiarchs. Apparently,
the high bone dorsal crest developed
in parallel in the exoskeleton of different bothriolepidid
groups.
Horseshoeichthys armaserratus, gen. et sp.
nov., (Clupeomorpha: Ellimmichthyiformes:
Sorbinichthyidae) is described from the
Horseshoe Canyon Formation (Maastrichtian),
Albertosaurus bonebed locality, Alberta, Canada.
Horseshoeichthys armaserratus is classified
as an ellimmichthyiform based on the following
characters: the presence of a sixth infraorbital
with a sensory canal that leads to the
fifth infraorbital, absence of a supraorbital
bone, subrectangular predorsal scutes, parietals
in contact with each other at the midline,
and two supramaxillae. The specimen is classified
in the Sorbinichthyidae Family as it has
abdominal ribs articulating in pits on the centra,
posterior spines on predorsal scutes, and
absence of a median spine on predorsal scutes.
A new genus and species is proposed based on
the presence of (anteriorly) Y-shaped mesethmoid,
supraorbital, subrectangular predorsal
scutes with coarse, rounded serrae on the
posterior margin and a large anterior projection,
scales with serrae on the circuli, and two
postcleithra. This specimen represents the first
freshwater ellimmichthyiform from the Upper
Cretaceous of North America and the highest
