Smithtown Emergency
Food Pantry
Almost 26 years ago members
from seven congregations within
the Township of Smithtown saw a
need to provide food to residents
who could not afford to feed their
families. The Smithtown Emergency
Food pantry is an ecumenical
project that depends on the
parishioners of the member
churches to provide food and to
staff the pantry on a rotating basis.
The purpose of the Food Pantry
is “To aid residents in an Emergency
Food Crisis.....” It is located
in the Parish House of St. Thomas
of Canterbury Episcopal Church at
90 Edgewater Avenue in Smithtown
and is open Monday
through Friday from 9 a.m. until

Smithtown Emergency Food Pantry
Desperately Needs Your Help
12 noon. The food pantry provides
a 3-day supply of food to individuals
and families. They also
provide Thanksgiving baskets (last
year 67 families received a holiday
dinner).
Over the years the need for the
pantry has grown. We are serving
more families now then ever before
and with the economic situation
in our country we anticipate
this need to continue to expand.
From January 2009 through October
31, we have assisted 850 families,
providing 24,975 meals. This
is a 75% increase over the same
period the previous year.
We greatly appreciate the generosity
and compassion of the
community in assisting us in this
ministry. Our shelves are empty
right now but we have faith that
the churches, schools and school
clubs, Boy and Girl Scouts, athletic
teams, local businesses, hospitals,
fraternal and social
organizations, town employees
and residents will provide assistance
in the coming months, just
as they have in the past.
