Smithtown Emergency 

Food Pantry 

Almost 26 years ago members 

from seven congregations within 

the Township of Smithtown saw a 

need to provide food to residents 

who could not afford to feed their 

families. The Smithtown Emergency 

Food pantry is an ecumenical 

project that depends on the 

parishioners of the member 

churches to provide food and to 

staff the pantry on a rotating basis. 

The purpose of the Food Pantry 

is “To aid residents in an Emergency 

Food Crisis.....” It is located 

in the Parish House of St. Thomas 

of Canterbury Episcopal Church at 

90 Edgewater Avenue in Smithtown 

and is open Monday 

through Friday from 9 a.m. until

Smithtown Emergency Food Pantry 

Desperately Needs Your Help 

12 noon. The food pantry provides 

a 3-day supply of food to individuals 

and families. They also 

provide Thanksgiving baskets (last 

year 67 families received a holiday 

dinner). 

Over the years the need for the 

pantry has grown. We are serving 

more families now then ever before 

and with the economic situation 

in our country we anticipate 

this need to continue to expand. 

From January 2009 through October 

31, we have assisted 850 families, 

providing 24,975 meals. This 

is a 75% increase over the same 

period the previous year.

This Thanksgiving I am Thankful for Margie and her Kickboxing Class... 

In September, when my schedule changed, I was forced to 

create a new gym schedule. That's how I ended up in Margie's 

Class. After just a few classes I saw changes in my body. My 

weight dropped 18 lbs and my whole body feels firmer. I am 

stronger, leaner, and happier for the changes. Anytime I credit 

Margie on my weight loss. I haven't increased the amount of time 

I spend at the gym or the amount of effort I invest in each 

session. Following Margie's routine is the cause of my success. 

Every year I enjoy hitting the ski slopes and this year I can't

from wheelchairs to walkers to 

crutches – anything the recuperating 

patient might need to make 

their home-care more comfortable.

Simply stop by during their 

Lending Hours – Monday through

geared toward children Pre-K

have fun making puppets after the

Long Island puppeteer Katie 

Polk believes her puppet art helps 

people develop their own creativity. 

She builds all her own puppets, 

using items she finds on 

beaches, in thrift stores and anywhere 

that may be home to 

clothes pins, buttons, empty 

thread spools, odd material and 

the like. Just about any item 

around may give life to one of 

Katie’s puppets. 

Combining sounds, textures, 

colors and rhythms Katie uses her 

inventive imagination to bring her 

puppet characters to life. She likes 

to incorporate “fun, silliness, 

imagination and a sense of wonder” 

into her puppets so “anyone,

About Rugs 

Hi Fran, 

Glad to hear you’re planning 

before buying! Carpets can be 

marginal (that means they cover 

most of the floor leaving a small 

border, perhaps a foot or so), 

seating oriented (meaning they 

create an “island” for your furniture) 

or scatter rug size (which 

creates a focal point). 

When shopping for rugs, I like 

to start with the largest one first. 

In your case, the living room 

could take a 12’ x 15’ or 10’ x 

14’ because of its size (I always 

like to leave at least a foot or two 

of flooring around the perimeter). 

For example, if your furniture 

is placed in the center of 

your room facing a fireplace, the 

rug should be centered in the 

room and you could leave as 

much wood or tile around as you 

choose. But, if the sofa seating is 

off to the side and there’s a game 

table or baby grand piano elsewhere 

in the room, it’s okay to 

put a rug under the main area 

and leave the rest uncovered. 

The dining room gives you 

some interesting options since 

it’s almost square. You could actually 

get a 10’ x 10’ square or 

round rug if your table is round, 

or a 9’ x 12’, if the table is rectangular. 

Pieces like your server 

and breakfront should be off the 

rug. Make sure the rug you select 

can completely cover the 

area under the table and chairs 

(without leaves inserted in the 

table). I like to place chairs half 

under the table, but I choose a 

rug that allows for full extension 

when people are sitting. 

Your entry foyer could take a 

round rug (5’ or 6’) or a rectangle 

(5’ x 7’ or even 6’ x 9’) depending 

on how close you want 

it to be to your front door. Remember, 

it’s not a door mat. 

You should also know that 

many Oriental rugs are slightly 

undersized – the standard 4’ x 

6’, 6’ x 9’, 8’ x 10’, 9’ x 12’ and 

10’ x 14’ are usually 3” less all 

around. The machine-made and 

hand-knotted are usually full size 

and some may come a foot 

longer than standard. Always 

check the tag and if your rug has 

fringe, measure that as well or 

have it removed, if you choose. 

So good luck on your rug journey.

decorating success.

Make it a year of exploring, understanding,

appreciating all the natural world 

around you and your family, even 

if it is only just outside of your

You could start right away by 

feeding the birds this year. There 

is not much food available to 

them during these months. They 

can be very entertaining to watch. 

See how many different types visit 

your feeder. Notice the time they 

come to feed and the seeds each 

prefers. They will stay around 

come spring, and reward you by 

feasting on the insects that also 

visit your garden. 

Start to compost. Within a short 

time you will have a wonderful 

amendment for your soil. You can

just make or buy a compost bin. 

There are many different sizes and 

types available. You can get 

started today, just pick a sunny 

spot and start saving all your 

kitchen scraps, vegetable and fruit

spring time, add garden leaves, 

weeds and grass clippings. Keep 

the pile moist and turn often. It is 

worth the effort. 

With all your beautiful compost 

you surely will want to grow your

flowers. Start with a small garden, 

maybe one thing of each or just 

one pot of each. Children love to 

grow things so let their enthusiasm 

move you. It is a thrill to plant 

a seed and, a few months later, eat 

something from that plant. The 

taste is just wonderful, it is cost effective 

and you are doing a small 

part in conserving energy. Grow 

extra and share your new passion 

with family, friends or a soup 

kitchen. It is just a win-win. 

Make a pact with yourself to get 

your exercise outside every day 

this year. Pick a new route for you 

to walk, run, bike or whatever it is 

you like to do. Find new parks or 

nature sanctuaries. There are so 

many all around us. Enjoy the 

beauty of the area during each 

season and share your experience 

with someone.

When you come home from 

your workout you should have a 

comfortable, quiet outside retreat 

to go to. If you don’t have a deck, 

patio or other private area, you 

can create a dining area just by 

using some potted plants. Surround 

the area with a variety of 

different-sized pots and plants. 

Put some poles or a trellis in some 

pots to grow climbing plants for a 

natural screen; some berry bushes 

or dwarf fruit trees for an edible 

screen. You have a few months to 

plan it all out. 

Get your children out in nature, 

out in the garden, the woods or at 

the shore. With all our technology 

now, we more than ever, need to 

keep our children in touch with 

the natural world. The following 

are some items you may want to 

put together for your children and

• Magnifying glass, to find things 

we would normally overlook – 

a tiny flower or a little bug. 

• A journal or notebook for note

Here’s Your Year-end Investment Checklist

We’ve pretty much seen it all 

this past year – a bear market, a 

long rally and even a period of 

neither-up-nor-down. But even 

though we’ve only got a few 

weeks left of 2009, you still have 

time to make some moves that 

can pay off for you in 2010 – and 

beyond. 

Here are a few suggestions to 

consider: 

• “Max out” on your iRA – and 

make regular contributions 

next year. For the 2009 tax 

year, you can contribute up to 

$5,000 to a traditional or Roth 

IRA, or $6,000 if you’re 50 or 

older. And you have until April 

15, 2010, to fully fund your 

2009 IRA. Of course, it’s not 

always easy to come up with 

lump sums of money, but do 

whatever you can to make up 

for any shortfalls in your IRA 

for 2009. And in 2010, consider 

setting up automatic 

monthly contributions to your 

IRA – it’s a much more efficient 

way to maximize a great retirement-savings 

vehicle. 

• increase your 401(k) contributions. 

If your employer permits 

it, try to add more money to 

your 401(k) or other retirement 

plan before the year ends. By 

increasing your 401(k) contributions, 

you can lower your 

adjusted taxable income while 

you potentially build more resources 

for retirement. 

• Convert your traditional iRA 

to a Roth iRA. Depending on 

your individual situation, a 

Roth IRA, which offers the potential 

for tax free growth, provided 

you meet certain 

conditions, may be a better 

choice for you than a traditional 

IRA, which offers the potential 

for growth on a tax 

deferred basis. Consequently, if 

you meet eligibility limits, you 

may want to convert your traditional 

IRA to a Roth IRA. 

However, this conversion is 

likely going to be a “taxable 

event,” so you’ll need to have 

money available outside your 

IRA for the tax bill. You’ll want 

to discuss this move with your 

tax advisor. 

• Sell your “losers.” If it’s appropriate

Vehicle Theft Affects Everyone’s Insurance Rates

Whether it’s the work of elaborate 

theft rings or random individual 

crime, auto theft is big 

business. On average, according 

to the Insurance Information Institute 

(III) a vehicle is stolen every 

29 seconds in the United States at 

a cost of about $7.4 billion a year 

in 2007. Insurance for theft is included 

in the comprehensive part 

of your auto insurance policy that 

also covers fire, vandalism and 

weather-related damage. 

The number of insured cars 

stolen and their cost directly affect 

insurance premiums. By taking a 

few precautions you can reduce 

the chances of having your vehicle 

stolen. 

• Always remove your keys from 

your parked vehicle. 

• Park with your front wheels 

turned sharply to the right or 

left and apply the emergency 

brake. This will make it difficult 

for a thief to tow your car. 

• Consider installing an antitheft 

device or buying a car with an 

immobilizer system that prevents 

a thief from driving off 

with the car. 

• Park in a locked garage, patrolled 

or well-lit area whenever 

possible. 

Unfortunately, carjacking has 

become a more common 

method of vehicle theft. Carjacking 

is the attempted or completed 

robbery of a vehicle by a 

stranger that includes the use of 

a threat or force. You can protect 

yourself from this crime. 

• Don’t roll down your car window 

to a suspicious person. 

• Keep your car doors locked 

and windows rolled up. 

• If a suspicious person is near 

your parked car, don’t approach 

it. Keep walking and 

contact area security or police.

Crime Bureau (NICB) to 

crack down on criminal operations.

Guardianship Proceedings

A guardianship proceeding becomes 

necessary if a person is not 

able to manage his or her daily affairs 

such as personal hygiene, 

diet, banking and other financial 

matters. Such a person is not competent 

to initiate a guardianship 

proceeding or to assist in the 

guardianship proceeding. Accordingly, 

a guardianship proceeding 

takes away all of the incompetent 

person’s decision-making powers 

and passes those powers to a person 

chosen by a judge of the New 

York State Supreme Court in a 

guardianship proceeding. That 

person is usually a family member 

who is willing to undertake the 

task. 

The court will first determine 

that the person is, in fact, incompetent, 

and then appoints a 

guardian to manage all of the incapacitated 

person’s affairs, including 

medical, financial and all 

daily living matters. That person 

could be a spouse, an adult child, 

or another person concerned for 

the incapacitated person. Because 

the incapacitated person is determined 

to be incompetent, he or 

she has no input as to who will be 

appointed by the court as his or 

her guardian. Once the guardian 

is appointed, he or she will have 

complete control over all of the 

incapacitated person’s life, including 

living arrangements, sale of 

his or her residence, management 

of financial assets, arrangements 

for nursing care and all of the incompetent 

person’s affairs of daily 

living. 

The appointed guardian will be 

obligated to make periodic reports 

to the court regarding all of the incapacitated 

person’s affairs such 

as living arrangements, financial 

circumstances and health care 

matters. In summary, a guardianship 

proceeding is exceedingly 

time consuming, expensive and 

litigation intensive. 

The good news is that a 

guardianship proceeding can be 

avoided if prior to incompetence 

the incapacitated person executes 

a power of attorney and a health 

care proxy. In that case, the person 

that the incapacitated person

Grand Prize in a contest sponsored 

by the French Embassy in

1-12 from the tri-state area, Jackson 

won the Grand Prize, and received 

his honor at a special 

ceremony at the Embassy recently. 

The contest was to honor the 

120th anniversary of the Eiffel 

Tower with a work of art – a painting, 

sculpture, video, website or 

music. Jackson wrote a song, 

which he taped in advance with 

piano accompaniment by his 

mother, Connie Gillies. 

Jackson’s teacher, Jo Ann Chiet, 

is a Harbor veteran. Last year she 

received the Dorothy Ludwig Excellence 

in Teaching Award, given 

by the American Association of 

Teachers of French to honor the 

best elementary school French 

teacher in the nation.

the Parsippany Pride tournament 

over the Columbus Day weekend, 

October 10 and 11. The Panthers 

traveled to New Jersey and competed 

in one of the largest soccer 

tournaments around. 

Over 530 teams from New Jersey, 

New York, Delaware and 

Pennsylvania participated in their 

level age groups, with age 13 

being at the top level of entries. It 

was a memorable weekend with 

perfect weather, super clean fall 

scenery and a diverse selection of 

field areas surrounding Parsippany’s 

Club domain. 

Playing against Division 1, Select, 

and Regional teams, it came 

down to a nail-biter ending in the 

last game where new goalie, zach 

Thiele, held off Manhattan SC in 

a 2-OT / penalty-kick match-off. 

Every teammate gave of himself to 

get the Panthers into the finals, so 

each player gets to take the gold 

trophy home. Job well done all 

around.

New Law Bans the Use of Portable Electronic Devices 

While Driving 

The Department of Motor Vehicles 

wants to reminded motorists 

that on November 1, 2009 a new 

law took effect that eliminates the 

use of portable electronic devices 

while driving, which includes texting 

while driving. 

The use of portable electronic 

devices, such as hand-held mobile 

telephones and personal digital 

assistants (PDAs), while 

operating a motor vehicle has led 

to distracted driving, which creates 

a threat to public safety on 

our roadways. 

Crashes due to driver inattention 

or distraction are on the rise 

in the U.S. and they have resulted 

in fatalities. The National Highway 

Traffic Safety Administration 

estimates that 25% of all policereported 

crashes involve some 

form of driver inattention. This 

new law will help limit driver distraction 

and inattention by prohibiting 

any operator in the state 

from using any portable electronic 

device while driving, and in turn, 

enhance highway safety. 

The new law excludes the use 

of an iPod or Global Positioning 

System (GPS), and the use of a 

hands-free cellular phone to talk 

is still legal. 

The new law is punishable with 

a fine of up to $150.

(GTSC) wants to remind motorists 

about the new child passenger 

safety law that took effect 

statewide on November 24, 2009. 

The law requires children under 

the age of 8 to be restrained by a 

child restraint system in a motor 

vehicle. It will take the place of 

the current law, which requires 

children under the age of 7 to be 

restrained by a child restraint system. 

New York joins more than 21 

other states requiring children 

under the age of 8 to be restrained 

by a child restraint system in a 

motor vehicle. 

An appropriate child restraint 

system is one which meets the 

child’s height and weight as recommended 

by the manufacturer. 

Depending on the size of the 

child, the restraint system may be 

a child passenger safety seat or a 

booster seat. The vehicle’s safety 

belts alone are not defined as a 

child restraint system. 

In 2008 more than 6,300 children 

under age 9 were injured in 

car crashes in New York State. According 

to the National Highway 

Traffic Safety Administration 

motor vehicle crashes are a leading 

cause of unintentional injuries 

and deaths for children.

Back pain is treatable and better 

yet preventable. No secret 

here, the key is exercise. For years 

the chiropractic profession has 

advocated the use of exercise in 

preventing and healing back injuries. 

As of late, this has become 

the forefront of new and exciting 

developments in the field of back 

care. It has been found that in as 

little time as two days muscles 

begin to weaken from underuse. 

Movement not only prevents 

muscles from atrophying, it also 

localizes pain and keeps it from 

radiating. It stimulates the release 

of our body’s natural pain killers – 

endorphins. A large majority of 

back injuries are a result of damage 

to muscles – due to inactivity 

then sudden demands (the weekend 

athlete syndrome) or to years 

of improper posture – strain on 

The Key to Prevention of Back Pain 

muscle tendons and ligaments. 

Muscle damage can cause 

spinal subluxation and the problem 

will worsen. With proper chiropractic 

care and exercise spinal 

function can be restored, pain 

greatly decreased and muscles relaxed 

and toned. 

Exercise can also help disc pain 

sufferers. Exercise “squeezes” the 

disc allowing nutrients to enter 

and metabolic waste products to 

exit the disc. It helps balance the 

soft jelly-like substance nucleus 

pulposus within the disc.

weight training, etc., or exercises 

that strengthen your back 

and abdomen and are all part of

Nicole Marie Link 

Nicole Marie Link, a resident of 

St. James, passed away on November 

6, 2009 at the age of 19 

after a 10 year battle with cancer. 

Nicole, a graduate of Smithtown 

East High School, was diagnosed 

with a rare brain tumor that 

attacks the brain and spine – 

ependymoma – at the age of 9. 

She fought a long and hard battle 

with her final year a real challenge. 

She was active with Relay 

For Life at the high school and 

wanted her message of “Never 

Give Up” to reach all individuals 

especially those with serious 

health issues. 

Nicole is the cherished daughter 

of Maria and Henry; loving sister 

of Christina, Gabriella and 

Joseph; beloved granddaughter of 

Michael and the late Josephine 

Guido, and James and Nancy 

Link. 

A Funeral Mass was held on 

November 9, 2009 at Sts. Philip & 

James R.C. Church in St. James 

followed by interment in the family 

plot at St. James Episcopal 

Cemetery.

George E. Walter, life long resident 

of St. James, passed away on 

November 25, 2009. He joined 

the St. James Fire Department on 

December 1, 1941 and was a fireman 

for 68 years. St. James Fire 

Department Chief during 1955- 

1958; St. James Fire Department 

Commissioner 1964-1988; Captain 

of Engine 2 and Board of Directors. 

He joined the U.S. Navy 

during WWII obtaining Rank of 

1st Class Petty Officer and served 

on P.T. boats in South Pacific in 

same unit as President JFK – active 

duty in combat. Mr. Walter was a 

union carpenter in the 1950’s until 

his retirement. He was a caring, 

generous man always there to 

help others. Loving husband of 

Elizabeth (Betty). Beloved father of 

Ronald and Robert (JoAnn). Cherished 

grandfather of Ann Marie, 

Robert John and the late Robert 

Ronald.

St. James Fire Department’s 29th Annual 

Christmas & Holiday Parade Set for December 19 

Santa Claus is coming to town 

Saturday, December 19, 2009. 

The St. James Fire Department 

will once again play host to 

Santa Claus and his friends for 

the 29th annual Christmas and 

Holiday Parade “The Festival of 

Lights.” 


Juniors are having a food drive 

for the local food pantry and are 

requesting all donations of nonperishable 

food items to be 

brought to the Main Fire House 

on Route 25A and Lake Avenue 

before 5 p.m. on December 19. 

They will also be collecting at 

the Mills Pond Elementary 

School at approximately 7:15 

p.m. that night. 

The parade departs at 5 p.m. 

Be sure to see all the brightly lit 

and holiday decorated fire trucks 

as they travel throughout the 

streets of St. James in celebration 

of this holiday season. 

The Fire Department requests 

residents on side streets to keep 

their cars off the road and move 

them into driveways during the 

parade as this route has some 

very tight turns. 

You can see the brightly lit 

trucks at the following viewing 

spots: Sts. Philip & James Church 

at 6:10 p.m.; King Kullen at 6:15 

p.m.; Capital One Bank at 6:18 

p.m. Then they will take a 20 

minute break and then on with 

the parade. They will pass the
