It’s that time of year again for
the St. James Polar Bear Club
and “we begin to ask ourselves,
‘What act of stupidity can I perform
for the sake of charity?’
Well, my friends, here’s your answer.
We celebrate this wonderful
season by preparing for our
annual Polar Bear Plunge!”
In its inaugural season, the St.
James Polar Bear Club raised
over $1,350 for the Children’s
Diabetes Foundation. This year’s
event promises to be bigger and
colder. Their plunge is scheduled
for Sunday, January 16, 2011 at
10 a.m. at Long Beach in Nissequogue,
Long Island.
If you are interested in taking
part in this crazy adventure at
Long Beach, (pre-registration is
$35; day of plunge is $50).
Please print out both forms on
their website: www.stjamespolarbearclub.org.
Bring the completed
and notarized forms to the
beach, then prepare to feel the
wintry embrace of the Long Island
Sound! All proceeds will go
to the CDF and participants will
receive a St. James PBC long
sleeve t-shirt.
For additional information you
may call Polar Bear Reza Kilahifar
at 949-8184. If you are unable
to get the forms completed,
there will be a notary on site the
day of the plunge.
If you don’t want to participate,
come on down and give
these Polar Bears some “warm”
support. You can also support
them by making a donation to
the Children’s Diabetes Foundation.
Send you donations (also
pre-registration forms) to: St.
Helpful HintS for
SWimmerS
by reza Kolahifar, Polar Bear
• Warm boots after swim: Have
warm/dry boots or shoes to put
on once you get out of the
Sound. This is an important
point – once your feet get cold,
your entire body will want to
go on strike. Not good for a
long walk back to your car.
• Blanket to sit on: Bring an old
blanket or towel to put down
on the icy shoreline to sit
down on and change
before/after the swim. I learned
this the hard way after my
swimming suit froze to the
ground with me in it!
• Do you wear glasses? If you
wear glasses, we suggest you
obtain an “athletic strap” or
something similar to hold them
to your face, or not wear them
at all! It is quite difficult to find
glasses that have been dropped
in the water on a sandy and icy
beach, and it you find them,
you may not want them after
all!
• 3...2...1... Several minutes before
10 a.m., get to your blanket/
changing area to begin to
disrobe.
• Savor the moment: Finally, the
swim will be over before your
goosebumps know what hit
them, so savor the moment out
in the Sound with your fellow
Polar Bears –
And for
God’s sake,
