The position required project management experience and the ability to set priorities.<br />
The job responsibilities entailed the coordination <strong>of</strong> functions that were related to the<br />
regulation and authorization <strong>of</strong> facilities falling within the scope <strong>of</strong> the National Nuclear<br />
Regulator Act, Act 47 <strong>of</strong> 1999 (NNR Act).<br />
Responsibilities:<br />
• Ensured that adequate and appropriate safety standards were established and in<br />
place for projects under the department’s control.<br />
• Ensured that research and development necessary to conduct the affairs <strong>of</strong> the<br />
department were undertaken.<br />
• Evaluated the assessments for completeness and technical scientific and procedural<br />
adequacy, correctness and completeness.<br />
• Ensured that holders <strong>of</strong> nuclear authorisation undertook periodic assessments to<br />
ensure that the cumulative effects <strong>of</strong> modifications and developments in assessment<br />
techniques and increases in knowledge do not render any facility or activity<br />
unacceptable.<br />
• Established conditions <strong>of</strong> authorisation to oblige licensees to ensure that the safety<br />
standards laid down were complied with.<br />
• Maintained an interface with national and international stakeholder representatives to<br />
ensure that a sufficient appreciation existed in respect <strong>of</strong> the National Nuclear<br />
Regulator and the fulfillment <strong>of</strong> its functions.<br />
2. National Nuclear Regulator<br />

March 1996 – June 1999<br />
This position entailed review and evaluation <strong>of</strong> submissions received from the<br />
authorisees, and also ensuring compliance with the various conditions <strong>of</strong> authorisation<br />
through conducting inspections.<br />
Responsibilities:<br />
• Inspected workplaces as defined in the NNR Act,<br />
• Investigated causes <strong>of</strong> accidents<br />
• Investigated and served requirements on employers where shortcoming needed to be<br />
rectified, and giving advice and guidance to the authorization holders on the<br />
application <strong>of</strong> the NNR Act and regulations.<br />
• Implemented a radiation protection programmes to adequately control radiation<br />
hazards to workers and visitors to the authorized site.<br />
• Controlled airborne and liquid-borne effluent to minimise hazards to members <strong>of</strong> the<br />
public and implemented environmental surveillance programmes to verify the<br />
adequacy <strong>of</strong> the controls.<br />
• Implemented a quality management programme to provide holders management with<br />
the assurance that the above mentioned was achieved.<br />
3. South African Nuclear Energy Corporation<br />

This position was in the Occupational Health and Safety Division. It entailed conducting<br />
investigations that were related to the improvement <strong>of</strong> safety at operating plants.<br />
Service was also rendered to external clientele with respect to the cleanup and<br />
rehabilitation <strong>of</strong> sites.<br />
