The position required project management experience and the ability to set priorities.
The job responsibilities entailed the coordination of functions that were related to the
regulation and authorization of facilities falling within the scope of the National Nuclear
Regulator Act, Act 47 of 1999 (NNR Act).
Responsibilities:
• Ensured that adequate and appropriate safety standards were established and in
place for projects under the department’s control.
• Ensured that research and development necessary to conduct the affairs of the
department were undertaken.
• Evaluated the assessments for completeness and technical scientific and procedural
adequacy, correctness and completeness.
• Ensured that holders of nuclear authorisation undertook periodic assessments to
ensure that the cumulative effects of modifications and developments in assessment
techniques and increases in knowledge do not render any facility or activity
unacceptable.
• Established conditions of authorisation to oblige licensees to ensure that the safety
standards laid down were complied with.
• Maintained an interface with national and international stakeholder representatives to
ensure that a sufficient appreciation existed in respect of the National Nuclear
Regulator and the fulfillment of its functions.
2. National Nuclear Regulator
Project Officer / Inspector: Regulation of Natural Sources Department
March 1996 – June 1999
This position entailed review and evaluation of submissions received from the
authorisees, and also ensuring compliance with the various conditions of authorisation
through conducting inspections.
Responsibilities:
• Inspected workplaces as defined in the NNR Act,
• Investigated causes of accidents
• Investigated and served requirements on employers where shortcoming needed to be
rectified, and giving advice and guidance to the authorization holders on the
application of the NNR Act and regulations.
• Implemented a radiation protection programmes to adequately control radiation
hazards to workers and visitors to the authorized site.
• Controlled airborne and liquid-borne effluent to minimise hazards to members of the
public and implemented environmental surveillance programmes to verify the
adequacy of the controls.
• Implemented a quality management programme to provide holders management with
the assurance that the above mentioned was achieved.
3. South African Nuclear Energy Corporation
Scientist: September 1994 – Feb 1996

This position was in the Occupational Health and Safety Division. It entailed conducting
investigations that were related to the improvement of safety at operating plants.
Service was also rendered to external clientele with respect to the cleanup and
rehabilitation of sites.
