the spermatozoa from 30% to
50% thereby proving that it is
indeed effective. Under refrigerated
storage, the semen is viable for 110
hours as compared to 90 hours
using eggyolk-based extender.
These results paved the way for
the development of SemEx, a semen
extender for goat formulated by
the project for commercialization.
Ensuring the delivery of
the technology to the raisers in
rural areas, systems of delivery
were also tested in Region 2 in
collaboration with the Department
of Agriculture – Regional Field
Unit (DA-RFU) 2 and different
participating local government units
(LGU). As such, ISU-CVSRRC-AI
Laboratory produced goat semen
to be stored at DA-RFU 2 for later
distribution to participating LGU.
This system benefited farmers from
18 municipalities across Region 2.
Moreover, private inseminators
are charging for insemination
services and using processed
semen from the laboratory.
To spread this activity to other
areas, the project also conducts
capability building for possible
AI service providers in the region.
To date, there are 64 trained
inseminators coming from other
regions aside from Region 2.
Indeed, through AI, farmers
are ensured that their stocks will
be upgraded at a faster and more
efficient way without the need of
maintaining quality breeder bucks.

low prices they received and the high
production costs they incurred. In fact,
they had the largest shares in the total
cost of marketable corn (28.6% for
Isabela farmers and 40% for Bukidnon
farmers). In addition, it was observed
that Bukidnon farmers had higher net
income shares than Isabela farmers
since they sold their produce in dried
form, which received better prices.”
