TRAINER:
EMPLOYING TRUST:
Urgent and Inpatient Psychiatry
Oak Ward, Torbay Hospital
Dr Kate Lovett
Devon Partnership NHS Trust
JOB DESCRIPTION
This post provides excellent core training in both inpatient and community psychiatry through an integrated
Urgent and Inpatient service. Trainees will have the opportunity to gain experience in administration of the
mental health act, modern inpatient care, focussing on effective gate-keeping of beds and facilitation of early
discharge. In addition the post gives the opportunity to gain competencies in acute psychiatric care in the
community by gaining experience in looking at alternatives to hospital admission and effective home treatment.
The focus throughout is on providing effective treatment and care that makes it safe for patients to recover.
Oak ward is one of three acute in-patient units for younger adults serving South and West Devon. There are 11
acute beds on the ward. Patients may be admitted to the ward if home treatment is no longer appropriate or
inpatient treatment will provide a more appropriate environment and support.
There are usually approximately 2 new admissions per week to the ward. The service covers the Teignbridge
area of South Devon which serves a population of approx. 130,00 centred around the towns of Teignmouth,
Newton Abbot, Totnes and Dartmouth and surrounding rural villages.
The Urgent and Inpatient team relate to 3 community consultants and their teams and it is proposed that the
trainee would work with all patients referred from one team throughout their placement to allow development of
good working relationships with the Recovery team, consultant and local GPs.
In addition to support from the consultant the service is supported by an associate specialist and CT1-3 trainee.
Torbay hospital has a well-established academic and audit programme and it is expected that the ST4-6 trainee
would take an active role within this. There is access to appropriate IT and library facilities within the hospital
site.
Dr Lovett has been a consultant for almost 10 years. She trained in Manchester, obtaining a Distinction in
