RESEARCH Specialty Trainees are encouraged to conduct research. Each Trust has modern library facilities and access to internet facilities. Opportunities exist within the Peninsula Medical School for undertaking MSc degrees in clinical research and education and trainees are actively encouraged to undertake a higher degree. In addition, opportunities exist within the academic department of mental health, Exeter University for working collaboratively on research projects in the field of mental health. FLEXIBLE TRAINING Specialty Trainee training is available on a flexible (i.e. part time) basis for doctors with good reasons. This applies to both men and women. Acceptable reasons include dependent relatives, whether adult or children, disability or ill health. This list is not exhaustive. Once a post is secured a Specialty Trainee may announce their desire to be a flexible trainee. Appointments to flexible training are made at interviews for full time training on a competitive basis. MAIN CONDITIONS OF SERVICE These posts are covered by the terms and conditions of service for hospital, medical and dental staff (England and Wales) and the general Whitley Council conditions of service. 1. These posts are whole time and non resident. There are also part-time flexible trainee posts available subject to requirements by Specialty Trainees. 2. The Specialty Trainee will already possess membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. 3. Each Specialty Trainee, following appointment, will gain a higher training scheme national training number (NTN). 4. The training scheme, following rotation to different posts, will lead towards a CCT (Certificate of Completion of Training). 5. Each Specialty Trainee will work a standard week of forty hours and in addition will carry out on-call duties. The terms and conditions of service with regards on-call may be amended from time to time. 6. The Specialty Trainee will be subject to an annual review of training (ARCP) to determine the continued suitability for higher training. This forms part of the Annual Appraisal mechanism. Specialty Trainee cannot progress to the next stage of their training without a satisfactory outcome from ARCP. In addition all trainees must participate in the NHS appraisal process with their consultant trainer and will be expected to demonstrate evidence of this at their ARCP, along with satisfactory completion of workplace based assessments including two rounds of 360° appraisal (mini P.A.T.). It is expected that the post holder will undertake and present and Audit Project - at least one per year – during their training. Individual training needs will be taken into consideration prior to allocation of specific posts. However, the final decision rests with the Training Programme Director and trainees will be expected to travel throughout the rotational area during their training. Only in exceptional circumstances would a trainee expect to complete all three years in one Trust. 7. Each Specialty Trainee will be required to have a current full driving licence. 8. The salary scale is as defined in the general Whitley Council conditions of service. 9.
