TRAINER:
EMPLOYING TRUST:
Primary Care Liaison Psychiatry
Dr Andrew Montgomery
Plymouth Primary Care Trust
Plymouth NHS has an established structure of functional teams with primary care liaison teams
(PCLT) working closely with home treatment and in-patient teams. The job provides excellent
opportunities to become familiar with this model of practice.
The PCLT is based on the Mount Gould site in a building shared by two other PCLT‟s providing care
to the residents of inner city Plymouth. The central team covers a catchment area of approximately
35,000. The area suffers from significant social and economic deprivation with some areas among the
most deprived in the UK. We provide care for patients with a wide variety of difficulties, often with
complex needs such as co-morbid substance dependency. The team works closely with specialist
forensic, substance misuse and asylum seeker teams.
The trainee will join the SW PCLT working within a multidisciplinary environment. The team consists of
7 community mental health nurses, two occupational therapist, two social workers, three support
workers, two consultant psychiatrists, one staff grade psychiatrist, one ST1 and one F2 trainee. The
trainee will have a case-load of patients who will either be care-coordinated by other team members,
or in a minority of less complex cases, by the trainee. The trainee will have three scheduled outpatient
clinics each week as well as opportunities for making home visits with other members of the
team. There will be opportunities to prepare Court reports under the supervision of Dr Montgomery.
The trainee will have the opportunity to undertake teaching of medical students and junior medical
staff on a regular basis and will be encouraged to undertake teaching on the MRCPsych course.
Dr Montgomery joined the Trust in 2005 having trained in London. He spent 5 years working at the
Medical Research Council Clinical Sciences Centre carrying out positron emission tomography
studies. Dr Montgomery has established a regular research meeting for medial staff within the
Plymouth Teaching Primary Care Trust and would be happy to support the trainee in their own
research work or if they wish, to join his own developing research programme.
Dr Montgomery is lead consultant for acute services and there are opportunities for the trainee to
become involved in service development and other management roles.
