Area, Receipts and Cash Profit
During the field visits, it was found that four villages in Surat are using wastewater for
irrigation. A total net area of 70 ha and a gross area of 146 ha is being irrigated using
wastewater. The estimated agriculture receipts are around Rs. 1.08 crore with a cash
profit of around Rs. 85 lakhs. Additionally, no fertilizer is used hence input cost is
reduced. It was also found through FGDs that productivity is 1.5 to 2 times of crops
grown using normal irrigation. Moreover, since sugarcane is a high return crop, which
requires less inputs and is therefore a preferred crop. Also the productivity of paddy
is double of that in normal irrigation, hence that too is a preferred crop.
