drainage. Hence, the major chunk of wastewater generated by 96.3 percent households in the city would reach the STPs. Wastewater Details There are eight STPs in Surat all of which are functional. The total capacity of these eight STPs is 642.5 MLD. While the wastewater from two STPs namely, Bhesan and Asarma of 100 MLD and 15 MLD capacities respectively, is used for irrigation in four villages located in their vicinity, water passing from STPs from five STPs is disposed in creek. A tertiary plant is being constructed near Bamroli STP of 100 MLD capacity, which will be used for industries, since many industries are located in the city and its vicinity. A total net area of 70 ha and a gross area of 146 ha is being irrigated using wastewater. The estimated agriculture receipts are around Rs. 1.08 crore with a cash profit of around Rs. 85 lakhs. Additionally, no fertilizer is used hence input cost is reduced. It was also found through FGDs that productivity is 1.5 to 2 times of crops grown using normal irrigation. Moreover, since sugarcane is a high return crop, which requires less inputs and is therefore a preferred crop. Also the productivity of paddy is double of that in normal irrigation, hence that too is a preferred crop.
