Turf Talk…
by Brad Tucker
Superintendent CDB
Now that winter is here and the golfing season is in full
swing, I cannot help to reflect upon the last three Florida
winters. Mother Nature has taught me that Florida winters
are basically unpredictable. The winter of 2010, we all
thought we were living in Chicago. The winter of 2011,
fairly normal. The winter of 2012, it felt like we were living
in the Keys. Well all of that aside, I will assume that this
winter will be a fairy normal one. This means we can expect
our usual 4 to 6 frost delays. I would like to take the
opportunity to actually explain why we can’t allow play on
the courses when there is frost.
How does frost damage turf? Its just partially frozen
water, we water the turf all the time. Grass plants, just like
all other living organisms, are made up of cells. For a
moment, imagine that plant cell as a balloon filled with
water. The balloon itself we will view as the cell wall. Just
inside the cell wall is the cell membrane. When frozen grass
plants are driven or walked on, the sharp edges of the ice
punctures the plant cell. This would be similar to sticking a
needle in the water balloon. Once this happens, the plant
cell looses pressure inside itself, and is no longer able to
function. The double edged sword for bermudagrass is that
the time of year that this occurs, the turf is least able to
recover. Long story short, when turf gets damaged due to
frost in the winter time, we can plan on that turf not
recovering for 2 to 3 months. My hope is that now members
understand why we have to hold up play.
In closing, thank you for your course care & enjoy the
2013 golf season.
2012 LADIES’ MEMBER GUEST
TOURNAMENT
The Ladies’ Member/Guest hosted on the Prestwick and
Club de Bonmont courses were held November 6-8th.. The
field was our largest to date with 43 teams competing. The
tournament kicked off with a skills challenge and
welcoming party and wrapped up with the final round and
awards luncheon. May Jacques and her guest Linda
McMillan captured this year’s title with steady play over
two days of multi-format play. The field enjoyed great
weather, spectacular course conditions and wonderful
meals throughout the event. Thank you to our tournament
committee members, Karol Wunk, Maureen Hutchinson,
Barbara Sette and all our ladies that supported this year’s
tournament. Congratulations to all of our winners!
