P R O J E C T I O N L I G H T S & S TA G I N G N E W S NEWS Adlib Supports Video, Lighting Needs for John Barrowman U.K. Tour LIVERPOOL — Adlib provided lighting and video support for the recent John Barrowman U.K. tour, with Steve Rayment tour managing the operation and Paul Crockford as tour director. It was Adlib’s third tour with Barrowman and a full Adlib crew. Adlib’s Andy Rowe stretched the budget with a rig that could flex to meet the needs of the variables inherent in Barrowman’s show. Having system tech’d on the last two tours, this time around he stepped up to take on the LD role, working alongside Charlie Rushton and Chris Neary. Rowe ran the show on a Road Hog Full Boar with a Wing, which also triggered the Catalyst media server running the projected visuals. A 30-foot-wide white upstage cyc served as the projection surface, and the Sanyo XF47 projector, mounted on the front truss, was fed content from a Catalyst v4 Pro media server. The visuals included a mix of colorful ambient moving wallpaper effects, plus some VT play-ins and sequences of stills of Barrowman’s family and personal collections, which were used to illustrate his stories. The crew uses a combination of manual cues and timecode to fire the cues. For lighting, the rig had front and back trusses and two gently-raked side trusses. On the back were eight Martin Professional MAC 700 Profiles and seven MAC 700 Washes. On the sides are three MAC 700 profiles and four MAC 301 LED Washes. Six MAC 700 Washes, nine Source Four 19 degree profiles and six 2-lites for the audience were positioned on the front truss for the show, and on the floor, at the back, there were another six MAC 301s, together with six PixelPAR 90s and another two MAC 700 Washes on each side. John Barrowman on tour with dancers Lighting Up the 2010 Asian Games’ Watery Stage GUANGZHOU, China — The recent opening ceremony of the 16th Asian Games on Haixinsha Island featured a 2,000-square-meter main stage covered with 10cm of water. Decorative elements included four stylized sailing ships and eight LED velomena. The largest multi-sport event in Asia, the Asian Games (also known as Asiad) are held every four years, with athletes from all over Asia. During the 16 days of competition, the Guangzhou Asian Games feature 42 events, promoting harmony among the Asian countries. Barco worked with China-based event planner BeiAo to position 16 XLM HD30 projectors around the 10,000-capacity audience area. As the velamena opened, the visual impression was to give the audience the feel of being aboard a ship sailing east. The show featured Barco’s XLM HD30 projector, a DLP projector with a native wide-screen aspect ratio of 2048 by 1080 resolution and light output of 30,000 center lumens. It uses a liquid cooling system. The visuals supported the Games’ main theme: “Invigorate Asia, Spark the World.” “We are so pleased that we succeeded in creating a huge dynamic image on the stage’s water surface for the opening ceremony,” said Jiangkang Lu, production manager for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2010 Asian Games, crediting Barco for its “outstanding technology” and “excellent video lighting systems.” “It’s the Barco projector that makes the stage so stunning,” added Sha Xiaolan, lighting engineer for the opening ceremony. “We are greatly honored to participate in this grand event,” said Fei Yan, general director of Barco Greater China. “This isn’t the first time a large number of Barco 30,000 lumen HD projectors have been used in sports events, but this is the first time for Barco at such a world stage event in China,” crediting “BeiAo’s professional cooperation and trust” as a key factor in the event’s success. ScreenPRO-II can also be operated with a DVI matrix router, further increasing the number of available DVI sources. The EOC option also provides scalable analog outputs, HDSDI outputs and 100 still stores. Current owners of ScreenPRO- II with EOC can download the software bundle at Barco’s website. The lineup includes the DS+6K-M; DS+10K-M; HD6K- M; HD10K-M; WU7K-M and the WU12K-M projectors. The models come in SXGA+ (4:3), HD (16:9) and WUXGA (16:10) resolution. Christie offers an upgrade path for its mid to high-end 3-chip DLP projectors with the Mirage M Series advanced 3D functionality. Sources using HDMI with HDCP (high-bandwidth digital content protection) will no longer introduce a delay when syncing. HDMI v1.4 features are implemented to support 3DTV. The ToolBox 1:4 and 1:8 Splitters for HDMI distribute any high definition source using HDMI and deliver it to either four or eight HDTV displays at the same time. A physical bypass switch allows users to select slow switching (no FST) for analog devices that will not work with more than one HDCP key.
