EDITOR’S NOTE
Think
Zen Buddhists believe that when a student
is ready, the teacher will appear.
But I found that a student can sometimes
be a great teacher, even a student
across the globe in a Third World country.
Several months ago, an Internet operator
called and said that she was interpreting for
a hearing-impaired caller. Through the operator,
the caller asked me to help him buy some
lighting equipment. He asked for my e-mail
address to contact me directly. Being anxious
to help, I obliged. After a number of e-mail
exchanges, I eventually learned that it was
a scam. The “hearing-impaired” caller from
Lagos, Nigeria had a stolen credit card with
which to pay for the goods. The goods were
never shipped, and I was thankful the lesson
was cost-free.
A few months later, we received a large
order on the PLSN Bookshelf Web site from
the Republic of Niger. Before we could
fill the order, we learned that the credit
card was stolen. Again, no merchandise
Globally ,
Act Now
changed hands, but it was a close call.
It’s very easy to become cynical about
people when you have these kinds of experiences.
When you have two bad experiences in
a row, it can really shake your faith in people.
That’s where the student teacher comes in.
No more than a month after the last incident,
I received an e-mail from someone
in Nigeria claiming to be a student. “Another
scam,” I thought. I almost deleted it. Instead, I
opened it and read about a 29-year-old man
named Titus who had recently completed his
degree in electrical/electronics engineering
at Lagos State Polytechnic with an additional
certificate in audio technology. He expressed
an interest in lighting, and he said he had
been given a copy of my first book, Focus on
Lighting Technology. That’s how he got my e-
mail address. He quoted from my book where
I recommended reading the Sylvania GTE
Lighting Handbook, and he asked if I could
send him a copy. Not only did I send him a
copy of that book, but I also sent him a copy of
By RichardCadena
my newest book, Automated Lighting: The Art
and Science of Moving Light, along with several
other lighting and audio books, as a way of
saying thanks for teaching me that there are
still plenty of good and decent people all over
the earth. I don’t normally do things like this,
but we started exchanging e-mails, and when
I read his words, I couldn’t resist.
“My major aim in life and (in) Nigeria is to
motivate youths to be good readers in order
to be a leader. I also want to help my local
church build a media ministry where I can
share my knowledge and ideas with youths
who have nothing. I have a dream of being a
job and wealth creator by investing in humanity.
What we really lack in Nigeria is investing
in human life.”
Wherever you are right now, take a
look around. Most of us in this industry are
blessed with abundance. We have laptops,
cell phones, iPods, nice cars, beautiful houses
and plenty to eat. But there are many people
in this world who have very little, people like
Titus, who live among poverty in conditions
that you and I would find appalling. Yet, this
man wants nothing more in life than to help
those around him. And I believe that by helping
him, we can take a step, however small,
towards making the world a better place.
If you agree, do me a huge favor. Look
around your office or home and find one book
about your profession that you no longer use.
It can be about lighting, or it can be about one
of the many subjects Titus is seeking — microphones,
microphone techniques, signal proccessors,
mixing techniques—Then put it in a
box or an envelope, and address it to:
