Minutes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General Assembly 2012<br />
(i) Moderator <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General Assembly<br />
(ii) Immediate past Moderator <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General Assembly for <strong>the</strong><br />
year following <strong>the</strong>ir tenure<br />
(iii) Moderator Designate for a year before <strong>the</strong>y take <strong>of</strong>fice<br />
(iv) Four o<strong>the</strong>r elders or ministers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Church</strong>, appointed by<br />
<strong>the</strong> Assembly on <strong>the</strong> recommendation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nominating<br />
Committee in consultation with <strong>the</strong> incoming Moderator.<br />
These members are to be chosen for <strong>the</strong>ir complementary<br />
skills, wisdom and experience in mission in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Church</strong> and<br />
encompasses <strong>the</strong> diversity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Church</strong>. The term <strong>of</strong><br />
appointment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se members is four years with a possible<br />
two-year extension to ensure continuity<br />
(v) Assembly Executive Secretary (ex <strong>of</strong>ficio)<br />
[12.024] That <strong>the</strong> position <strong>of</strong> Moderator be a full-time, four-year fixed term with<br />
appropriate stipend/remuneration and accountable to <strong>the</strong> General<br />
Assembly through <strong>the</strong> Moderatorial Commission.<br />
[12.025] That <strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong> identifying <strong>the</strong> appropriate mission leader to be its<br />
Moderator Designate be by <strong>the</strong> following process, beginning by <strong>the</strong> midpoint<br />
in <strong>the</strong> current Moderator’s term:<br />

(e)<br />
(f)<br />
The MC, acting as a search committee, reviews <strong>the</strong> current<br />
missional direction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Church</strong> and discerns <strong>the</strong> gifts, skills<br />
and experience required <strong>of</strong> an incoming Moderator to lead <strong>the</strong><br />
next stage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Church</strong>’s mission.<br />
The MC circulates this review to church councils and invites<br />
<strong>the</strong>m to submit names <strong>of</strong> suitable nominees (ministers or<br />
elders), with reasons why <strong>the</strong>ir nominee meets <strong>the</strong> discerned<br />
attributes for <strong>the</strong> next Moderator.<br />
The MC assesses <strong>the</strong>se nominations in relation to <strong>the</strong> skills and<br />
attributes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> position, and through a process, which may<br />
include interviews, discerns from those nominated a short list<br />
(maximum five) to be sent to church councils and presbyteries<br />
to give an indicative vote, in order <strong>of</strong> preference.<br />
Using a “call” process, <strong>the</strong> MC considers <strong>the</strong> mind <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Church</strong><br />
in light <strong>of</strong> its missional direction and recommends to <strong>the</strong><br />
Assembly <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> a Moderator Designate.<br />
The Assembly votes on <strong>the</strong> recommendation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> MC.<br />
In <strong>the</strong> event that <strong>the</strong> elected Moderator Designate is unable to<br />
take up <strong>the</strong> position <strong>of</strong> Moderator, <strong>the</strong> MC will review <strong>the</strong> short<br />
list and make a fresh appointment to be ratified by <strong>the</strong> next<br />
General Assembly.<br />
[12.026] That <strong>the</strong> Book <strong>of</strong> Order Advisory Committee be asked to draft<br />
regulations and supplementary provisions to give effect to <strong>the</strong>se<br />
decisions.<br />
[12.027] That <strong>the</strong> Moderator Designate for 2012-14 be invited to accept<br />
appointment for a four-year term as Moderator, beginning in 2014;<br />
however he or she may choose, in consultation with <strong>the</strong> MC, to serve full<br />
or part-time and for ei<strong>the</strong>r a two or four year term.<br />
[12.028] That <strong>the</strong>se decisions be remitted for consideration in accordance with<br />
<strong>the</strong> Special Legislative Procedure.<br />
[12.029] That <strong>the</strong> decisions be adopted ad interim.<br />
