Paul Salerni<br />
Recently signed: two delightful one-act operas by Paul Salerni. (Can be presented<br />
toge<strong>the</strong>r, with cast doubl<strong>in</strong>g possibilities).<br />
Dana Gioia’s libretto to Tony Caruso’s F<strong>in</strong>al Broadcast is about a classical music radio<br />
station on <strong>the</strong> eve <strong>of</strong> a change <strong>of</strong> format to easy listen<strong>in</strong>g, mandated by <strong>the</strong> stations new<br />
management. The Life and Love <strong>of</strong> Joe Coogan, from an episode <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dick Van Dyke<br />
Show by Carl Re<strong>in</strong>er, has been adapted for <strong>the</strong> opera stage by librettist Kate Light, with all<br />
<strong>the</strong> humor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> TV show and much <strong>of</strong> Re<strong>in</strong>er’s orig<strong>in</strong>al script as well as new material to transform it to<br />
<strong>the</strong> opera medium.<br />

Premier<strong>in</strong>g April 12th on <strong>the</strong> 150th anniversary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> start <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Civil War, this new<br />
music <strong>the</strong>ater piece by Gordon and librettist Mark Campbell takes us on a journey<br />
through events as experienced by different fictional characters <strong>in</strong> one corner <strong>of</strong><br />
Virg<strong>in</strong>ia. Co-commissioned by <strong>the</strong> Virg<strong>in</strong>ia Arts Festival, Virg<strong>in</strong>ia Opera, <strong>the</strong> Modl<strong>in</strong><br />
Center for <strong>the</strong> Arts at <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Richmond and <strong>the</strong> Texas Perform<strong>in</strong>g Arts at <strong>the</strong><br />
University <strong>of</strong> Texas <strong>in</strong> Aust<strong>in</strong>. Premiere at Virg<strong>in</strong>ia Arts Festival <strong>in</strong> Norfolk, followed by<br />
performances <strong>in</strong> Richmond and Aust<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> September, 2011.<br />
