N<strong>in</strong>e-year old Peggy has an imag<strong>in</strong>ary playmate, “Clown,” who is very real to her. She blames <strong>the</strong> Clown<br />
for her behavior, which is caus<strong>in</strong>g problems at school and with her Mo<strong>the</strong>r. The truth about <strong>the</strong> Clown<br />
(visible to <strong>the</strong> audience) is slowly revealed as Peggy realizes that her Fa<strong>the</strong>r is dead. The Clown, who has<br />
been a fa<strong>the</strong>r-substitute <strong>in</strong> her m<strong>in</strong>d, is no longer needed, and says good-bye.<br />

Arthur Crew Inman was a Boston recluse who, <strong>in</strong> order to ga<strong>in</strong> immortality, obsessively documented <strong>the</strong><br />
countless stories (<strong>in</strong> diaries that run to 155 volumes) related to him by people whom he would pay, <strong>in</strong><br />
order to hear about <strong>the</strong>ir lives <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>timate detail. He was especially <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> young women, and was<br />
known to have been sexually <strong>in</strong>volved with several <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m. He committed suicide <strong>in</strong> 1963.<br />
