Es<strong>the</strong>r was made queen by <strong>the</strong> Persian k<strong>in</strong>g Ahasuerus. When <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g’s chief m<strong>in</strong>ister planned to kill all<br />

<strong>the</strong> Jews <strong>in</strong> an act <strong>of</strong> vengeance aga<strong>in</strong>st his arch-enemy, Es<strong>the</strong>r revealed to <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g that she was Jewish,<br />

and pleaded for her people. Her triumph was hard-won: Ahasuerus could not revoke <strong>the</strong> exterm<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

edict, but <strong>in</strong>stead, allowed <strong>the</strong> Jews to arm <strong>the</strong>mselves. Their successful defense is commemorated to this<br />

day <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> annual festival <strong>of</strong> Purim.<br />

Venus, accidentally wounded with one <strong>of</strong> Cupid’s arrows, falls <strong>in</strong> love with Adonis, who is not at all<br />

smitten, and is more <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> hunt<strong>in</strong>g. The situation is not without humor, until Death enters <strong>the</strong><br />

picture, and Adonis’ fate is sealed.<br />

Jenny, a 99-year-old woman, wanders at night <strong>in</strong> a London park. While young lovers are occupied on<br />

<strong>the</strong> park benches, she falls <strong>in</strong>to conversation with a young photographer, remember<strong>in</strong>g her youth and her<br />

loves. The young lovers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> present are confused with ghosts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> past, and <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>es between life and<br />

death become blurred.<br />

Musically, dramatically, and symbolically, <strong>the</strong> opera deals with <strong>the</strong> unprecedented moral problems caused<br />

by <strong>the</strong> circumstances <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Second World War. Actual happen<strong>in</strong>gs and imag<strong>in</strong>ary events are juxtaposed.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al analysis, <strong>the</strong> characters face personal responsibility for mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> choice between right and<br />

wrong, and <strong>the</strong> conclusion that, though we are all “dirty,” we are not all damned.<br />
