1. All of us at Prestige Philately are proud to present to you the catalogue for our
Seventh International Rarities Auction. In keeping with our previous Rarities Auction
catalogues, no expense has been spared in presenting philately as art. Virtually all
of the lots are illustrated - many enlarged up to four times actual size, or even bigger.
Many secondary images have also been included: enlargements of varieties, central
designs etc. Where it makes sense to do so, we have presented extracts, rather than
entire items. We’re sure you will agree that this makes the catalogue even more userfriendly
and a more valuable reference work.
2. I’ve made the point before that all our Rarities Auctions have been characterized by
being completely different from one another. On this occasion, because we are
offering Bernie Manning’s Queensland as a stand-alone sale (see the next page), it
is a relatively small auction. However, we are again pleased to bring you an
exceptional array of stamps, covers, postal stationery and other material, with
estimates from $100 (not all elusive material is expensive) up to $15,000 thus offering
something for most budgets.
As with Rarities #6, this auction is remarkable for the balance achieved between
Australian Commonwealth (94 lots), the Australian Colonies (80 lots), and the Rest of
the World section (62 lots).
3. From Australia, we have a fine selection of Kangaroos, most of which are
unmounted mint, plus a good range of KGV material. And, courtesy of George Lang
from Western Australia, we are presenting the most important group of Australian First
Day Covers ever to appear at auction.
The Australian Colonies section includes many wonderful multiples and proofs, plus
an appealing selection of Victoria’s first stamps, the “Half-Lengths”. For those who
prefer a more modern flavour, the Western Australia Group Settlement datestamps
may entice you.
From overseas we have some splendid Classics, including mint and used Plate 11
“Penny Blacks”, the first we have ever offered. And don’t miss the wonderful 14-
page letter from a naval officer at Gallipoli: Lot 206. Collectors of Australian issues
should also pay attention to the archive of material relating to the 1958 joint issue with
New Zealand celebrating the 50 th Anniversary of Sir Charles Kingsford Smith’s first
Trans-Tasman flight: Lots 217 to 223. We even have an exciting new discovery from
Papua.
4. If you have been following the market in recent times, you will have noted that
philatelic auctions are doing very well. Our general sale in April had a solid clearance
of 87% of the lots, but the realisations exceeded 110% of the total estimates. Our
“Ello” New Guinea auction in March did even better with every lot selling. And the
same 100% sellout was achieved for our Bushfires Relief Charity Auction: our
appreciation to everyone who helped us to donate $122,000 to the Red Cross.
The bottom line is that while the financial markets are in recovery mode, while shares
and property are under pressure, and while interest on bank deposits is close to zero,
many stamp collectors are happy to put more of their resources into their collections.
And why not?
We are pleased to again give you the opportunity to buy items of beauty that will
provide great enjoyment for many years to come.
Prestige Philately - Auction No 145 Jun 13, 2009
Congratulations to Dr Geoffrey Kellow, RDP
Geoff Kellow is one of Australia’s most respected and distinguished philatelists. He is best
known as editor of the “Australian Commonwealth Specialists’ Catalogue”, widely regarded
as the finest one-country catalogue in the world. Geoff is also currently the editor of the
“Bulletin” of the Australian Commonwealth Collectors Club of NSW and convenor of the
Australian States Study Circle. He is a long-time member of the Royal Philatelic Society,
London and the Royal Philatelic Society of Victoria of which he has served as both President
and Chairman of the Expert Committee.
A remarkably well-rounded philatelist, Geoff has written on an extraordinary array of
subjects, and has published major works on “The Stamps of Victoria” and Australia’s
“Kangaroo & Map” series. He has been awarded Gold Medals for his exhibits of Victoria’s
“Queen-on-Throne” and “Shilling Octagonal” issues, and his current exhibits include Sierra
Leone and the Indian Feudatory State of Kishangarh. Importantly, he is always generous with
sharing his knowledge.
In 2009, Geoff Kellow has been invited to sign the prestigious Roll of Distinguished
Philatelists at the Philatelic Congress of Great Britain in July. This is the highest of all
philatelic honours and the culmination of a remarkable professional and private career
dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge and the attainment of excellence in research,
publishing and exhibiting.
All of us at Prestige Philately join Geoff’s countless friends and admirers in toasting his
election as an “RDP”. The award could not have been made to a more deserving recipient.
The Bernie Manning Collection of Queensland
Sidefaces, Large Chalons, Charities etc
The Queensland Sesquicentennial Auction
It is appropriate that Melbourne collector Bernie Manning has chosen 2009 as
the time to sell the balance of his Queensland stamps, as this year marks 150
years since Queensland was created as a separate Colony.
This exceptional collection - probably the finest of its type ever to be offered
at public auction - could have been incorporated into our Seventh Annual
International Rarities Auction. However, we considered that it was of such
significance that it deserved its own catalogue.
Bernie Manning’s Queensland will be offered for sale at 7pm on Saturday
13 th June. If you have not received the catalogue, please contact us now
and we will rush a copy to you.

Understanding our Symbols & Unique Grading System
At Prestige Philately we utilise much the same symbols as other firms, but with some additional categories that you should be aware of.
We are the only major firm in the world that actually grades the quality of the material we offer. While some clients have struggled with
the whole concept of grading, most have clearly embraced the idea and we receive much favourable comment about the system. It is
important that you understand our Grading System because the symbols used form part of the lot description. We are confident that
once you are comfortable with our gradings, you will always be satisfied with the quality of the material you purchase from us. And, in the
event that we have missed a tear or a thin and consequently overgraded an item, we WANT you to return it. We stand behind the Prestige
Grading System.
1. Firstly, we have the lot number. If it is in bold and printed in bright red, the item is illustrated: e.g. 1234. (The actual location of the
illustration is given at the end of the description: e.g. {Page 41.8} is position 8 on page 41.)
2. The second column contains a symbol, which represents the item(s) in the lot:
** Mint, unmounted o.g. * Mint, mounted o.g.
Ω Unused, no gum Δ Piece
C Cover or card PS Postal Stationery
CL Cover, long CX Cover, oversize
A Albums and accessories B Booklet
E Essay L Literature
P Proof R Reprint
S Stamp (“Postmarks” lots)
or, in the case of used stamps, a grading of the cancellation:
V Neat postmark, leaving most of the stamp design clear O Used, quality unspecified
F Neat postmark, across at least half of the stamp design G Untidy or indistinct postmark
H Heavy or poorly struck postmark
3. The third column gives an overall quality assessment for the lot, from ‘A’ to ‘D’. The same standard applies to mint and used stamps, to
covers, postal stationery, literature etc. An item graded ‘A’ is very fine; it has no faults. ‘B’ items are fine and may have minor imperfections.
A ‘C’ item will exhibit obvious faults. Items in poor condition are rated ‘D’.
Occasionally, an item in truly superb condition will be rated ‘A+’. This grading is used sparingly and is not applied to modern material, which
one would normally expect to be in very fine to superb condition.
An otherwise very fine item which has a subsidiary problem may be allocated an ‘A-’. This may be a stamp with writing or a hinge remainder
on the reverse. A cover may have a receiver’s endorsement on the face. The halves of a letter card may be stuck together. A book may
have a previous owner’s notations. Whether this factor makes the item an ‘A-’ or ‘B’ is a matter of degree. NB: An expertiser’s signature or
handstamp on a cover or the reverse of a stamp will not normally be cause for downgrading the quality of an item: such marks will be
mentioned and you should make your decision as to whether or not such an item is of the standard that you personally require.
Occasionally, the symbol ‘A’ to ‘C’ will appear in brackets: eg (B). This signifies that the item has been renovated or repaired and improved
to the grade indicated by the letter. The brackets indicate a qualified grading, the cause for which will be mentioned in the description of the
lot.
4. The fourth column is relevant to perforated stamps, and also to lots listed under the sub-heading ‘Postmarks’.
For perforated stamps, this column gives a grading for both centring and perforations. The letter ‘A’ to ‘D’ relates to centring. ‘A’ stamps
are very well centred; ‘B’ stamps are slightly off-centre; ‘C’ stamps are significantly off-centre, and may have the perforations slightly into the
design; ‘D’ stamps are badly off-centre, with the perforations well into the design.
[NB: These gradings are the same for all perforated issues, whether Australian Decimals, De La Rue Colonial keyplates or 19 th Century
American issues. However, it should be understood that for many issues poor centring is the norm. Thus ‘C’, and even ‘D’, gradings should
be expected and accepted. For such issues a ‘B’ stamp will be above-average and an ‘A’ stamp will be considered an exceptional copy.]
Following the letter ‘A’ to ‘D’ is a number ‘1’ to ‘4’. A stamp with all perforations intact is ‘1’. One or two short perfs, or normal rough
perforations, will drop the grading to ‘2’. More notable perforation problems such as the perfs down one side being trimmed will result in a ‘3’
grading. A stamp with major perforation faults will be a ‘4’.
[NB: A stamp graded ‘A1’ is well-centred with all perforations intact. In many cases, particularly with modern issues, this is the norm.
However, for many issues, ‘B2’ or even ‘C3’ may be normal and quite acceptable.]
For lots listed under the sub-headings “Postmarks” and “Ship/Paquebot Markings”, or similar, this column gives a grading for quality of
the strike of the marking itself, and completeness. Quality is graded from ‘A’ (very fine) to ‘D’ (poor). Completeness is graded from ‘1’
(complete) to ‘5’ (identifiable only). ‘+’ is used for superb strikes; ‘-’ is used for postmarks that are lightly struck, a little doubled, or otherwise
a bit short of the mark.
5. The symbols in the second, third and fourth columns, and the illustrations of lots, form part of the lot description.
6. Figures in the right-hand column are our estimate of value. (If a lot attracts tax for Australian buyers, the estimate is in green, followed
by a small "T".) You may bid at, above or below estimate. The reserve price for almost every lot is 75% of estimate (rounded to the nearest
bidding step). Bids below this level will not be considered.
7. We use the following standardised abbreviations:
Prestige Philately - Public Auction Terms of Sale
(amended as at 1 st January 2009: see in particular Paragraph 10 relating to Extensions)
1. AUCTIONEER: Prestige Philately (Prestige), a company incorporated in the State of Victoria, is the auctioneer, and adheres to the
standard terms of sale of the Australasian Philatelic Traders Association.
2. DESCRIPTIONS: We endeavour to describe lots fully and accurately. The description of a lot comprises 1) the codes to the left of the
description (for details of our symbols and grading codes, see the previous page of this catalogue); 2) the description; and 3) any
illustration of the lot or part of the lot. (The various codes and symbols are explained on the previous page.
3. ESTIMATES: The figure in the right-hand column following each lot description is the starting price of the lot in Australian dollars. A
bidder - may bid at, above or below the estimate. Bids below the reserve price (usually 75% of the estimate) will not be accepted. There is
no reserve on lots listed at $20 or less.
4. BIDDING: Bids may be made to Prestige by mail, by fax, by e-mail or by phone. Bids received by phone must be confirmed in writing.
At public auctions, bids may also be made in person, by phone (by prior arrangement) or through an agent attending an auction. An agent
must advise Prestige of the person(s) for whom bids are being submitted or else the agent will be personally liable for payment and
delivery of any lots purchased. Prestige reserves the right to refuse any bid, or to refuse bids from any person, for any reason.
In most cases, Prestige's bidding steps are as follows:
$150 - 300 $10 rises $3000 - 5000 $200 rises
$300 - 500 $20 rises $5000 - 10000 $250 rises
$30 - 50 $2 rises $750 - 1500 $50 rises $15000 - 30000 $1000 rises
$50 - 150 $5 rises $1500 - 3000 $100 rises over $30000 average of 5% rises
Prestige reserves the right to raise or lower postal bids (depending on the bidder's apparent intention) to conform to these bidding steps.
5. TELEPHONE BIDDING: Bidding by telephone during the course of a public auction is permitted. However, clients wishing to use this
service must contact Prestige at least 24 hours before the auction regarding the special conditions that apply. [To see these special
conditions, go to www.prestigephilately.com from where the Telephone Bidding Terms can be read and downloaded.]
6. GOODS & SERVICES TAX (GST): Australian law requires that GST equal to 10% of the knock-down or sale price of a taxed lot shall be
payable by the buyer, unless the taxed lot is exported to another country. Taxed lots are indicated in the catalogue by the estimate figure:
being printed in bright green, followed by a small "T". GST equal to 10% of the amount of any fees or charges added by Prestige is
also payable by Australian buyers.
7. BUYER: The buyer of a lot shall be the person to whom the lot is sold ("knocked-down") by Prestige. In the event of equal bids being
received, the earliest such bid shall be successful. In the event of a dispute, Prestige shall have absolute discretion in the settling of the
dispute.
A lot is at the buyer's risk once it has been sold ("knocked-down") but ownership (legal title) will not pass to the buyer until Prestige has
received payment in full for the lot.
8. PAYMENT: Payment is due immediately a lot is sold, or immediately upon receipt of an invoice. For public auctions only, in addition to
the price for which a lot is sold, the buyer shall pay a premium of 15% of that price, plus any fees for postage packing and insurance or
credit card use that are charged by Prestige, plus GST as appropriate. No buyer's premium is charged or payable in respect of postal
auctions. (Payment should always be made in Australian dollars. If payment is made in another currency the buyer shall add the
equivalent of $A50 towards bank fees, any resulting credit being placed to the buyer's account.)
In the event that the buyer does not make payment in full for the lot(s) within 30 days from the date of the invoice, Prestige shall have
the right to exercise any one or more of the following rights and remedies:
1) To impose an accounting fee of $10 per month (or part thereof) plus compound interest at the rate of 2.5% per
month (or part thereof) of the total amount outstanding;
2) To terminate the contract with the buyer, in which case any monies received from the buyer shall be forfeited to
Prestige;
3) To terminate the contract and resell the lot(s) at any time, in which case any resulting shortfall, plus costs
including accounting fees, interest, insurance and resale expenses, shall be met by the original buyer;
4) To apply any monies due at any time from Prestige to the buyer in payment of the outstanding amount;
5) To take legal action against the buyer for damages for breach of contract.
9. RETURN OF LOTS: A lot may be returned, within a reasonable time, only because of an error in the description: see clause 2 for the
definition of "the description". A lot that has been inspected by the buyer or by the buyer's agent cannot be returned for any reason. A lot
that is illustrated in the catalogue or of which an illustration has been supplied to the buyer or to the buyer's agent cannot be returned for
any reason that is apparent from the illustration.
A lot expressed to be a "range", "group", "selection", "array", "collection"," accumulation" or similar, or any other lot containing more than
10 items - excepting sets of stamps - is always offered "as is" and cannot be returned for any reason. Similarly, other lots offered "as is"
cannot be returned.
10. "EXTENSIONS": A request for an extension to submit a lot to a recognised expert or expert committee for a Certificate of Authenticity
must be made in writing prior to or on the day of the auction. Prestige Philately shall have an absolute discretion to not grant an
extension. (In particular, an extension will not normally be granted if the lot is offered with a recent Certificate of Authenticity, or one from
a prominent authority, or if the stamp(s) has/have perforated initials (perfins).) If an extension is granted, the buyer must make payment
in full for the lot including the buyer’s premium and any GST payable, in accordance with Paragraph 8 of our "Terms of Sale". The
amount paid including the buyer’s premium will be refunded in full if the lot is returned with an acceptable “bad” Certificate. All costs
associated with obtaining a Certificate shall be borne by the buyer, unless the lot is found to be not as identified in the catalogue in which
case all costs associated with obtaining the Certificate shall be borne by the vendor and refunded to the buyer.
A lot described as being defective in any way may not be returned should the Certificate obtained mention any fault not noted in the lot
description. The buyer shall not be entitled to return the lot if the certificate includes any statement that does not materially affect the
grading of the lot.
Unless otherwise agreed, nomination of the appropriate expert or expert committee shall be made by Prestige, and Prestige will be
responsible for submitting the lot to that expert or expert committee. (Should Prestige agree to the buyer’s nomination of an expert or
expert committee, or should the buyer submit the lot for examination, the extension granted shall be for a period of no more than 90
days from the date of the auction. In that case, if a Certificate has not been obtained within 90 days from the date of the auction, the
extension shall lapse and Prestige may thereafter refuse to accept the return of the lot.)
11. GOVERNING LAW: These Terms of Sale shall be governed by and interpreted in accordance with the laws of the State of Victoria.
12. Submitting a bid by any method constitutes acknowledgment and acceptance of these Terms of Sale.

tablets in black on glazed card (92x61mm) with 'BEFORE/HARDENING' handstamp at upper-right &
'13SEP12' handstamp in blue at upper-left. Superb! Ex Strutt. [This design was apparently intended for
the issues of multiple Colonies, but the inscription, in omitting reference to a fiscal function, was
considered too limiting & it was utilised for the Solomon Islands 1913 issue only. The same design
but inscribed 'POSTAGE - REVENUE' was introduced soon after and used by several Colonies]
PHILATELIC LITERATURE
3 L A-
Lot 3
"The Royal Philatelic Collection" by Sir John Wilson (1952), being a complete catalogue of the most
important and valuable stamp collection ever formed, compiled by the Keeper of the Royal Collection
himself. Without doubt, this is the finest philatelic book of all time, produced on the highest-quality
paper, extensively illustrated with 64 black & white plates and 12 exceptional colour plates. This is the
deluxe edition bound in red Morocco leather with the Royal coat-of-arms emblazoned in gold on the
face. A few minor tonespots on the page-edges otherwise in excellent condition. The accompanying
original slipcase has lost the top panel but is otherwise intact albeit well reinforced. Ex Peter Troy.
The 12 magnificent plates in colour photo-lithography were so well printed that cutouts have often
been sold as original stamps!! If this book had been published in any other field of endeavour it would
be worth many thousands of dollars. Because it's "only" philately, it has never achieved its potential
and is a gift at our estimate. Weighing 7 kilograms, this impressive volume should be the cornerstone
of every philatelic library worth the name.
The last copy we offered - Tim Rybak's example - sold for $1840 at our auction of 24/5/2008, to a
European buyer, which might suggest that the British supply has all but dried up.
COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA - First Day Covers
[The lots in this section are from the exceptional collection formed by RG ("George") Lang from Western Australia. George has, for
many years, been recognised as one of the leading collectors of Australian First Day Covers and other enthusiasts will be delighted to
see these "plums" come onto the market. In fact, this is one of the strongest offerings ever of this material. Rodney Perry conducted two
market- defining First Day Covers auctions way back in 1997 & 1998. It is notable that most items in this section were not represented
in either of those sales. Catalogue listings are not entirely satisfactory and the ACSC prices tend to be well behind our expectations of
the real market levels. Our estimates are based far more on relative rarity than on the catalogue quotes. While they may appear
adventurous, we expect that serious collectors will respond positively to this once-in-a-generation opportunity]
57 C A+
Lot 57
1913-14 Engraved KGV 1d pale red from Plate 1 with Weak Entry at Right Side BW #59Aw
tied to Sheard cover by fine 'RED HILL/8DEC13/QUEENSLAND' cds, typed "First
day/cancellation." at upper-left matches the typed address. Quite exceptional. This is the
earliest recorded cover prepared by noted First Day Cover enthusiast Saville H Sheard.
The ACSC states "Date of Issue: 9 December 1913 officially, but placed on sale at some
post offices on 8 December 1913". However, this is not quite accurate. The Penny Engraved
was issued in Queensland, South Australia & Victoria on 8/12/1913; and in New South
Wales & Tasmania on 9/12/1913 (the date of release in Western Australia is unknown).
Therefore, there were two dates of issue.
The ACSC prices covers of 9/12/1913 at $6000 but those of the earlier date at $3500. Our
vendor contends - and we are inclined to agree with him - that they should be priced the
same. In fact, if the US/GB/NZ practice of seeking the Earliest Recorded Usage was applied,
the 8th December covers would have the greater value.
8/11/1923) tied to plain cover by Sydney British Empire Exhibition slogan of MY1/1924 BW #77y, Cat
$7500. [The ACSC states "Two first day covers have been recorded"]
1st May 1924 is considered by many collectors to be the starting point for Australian First Day
Covers. Apart from the Penny Engraved in 1913 (and that date is contentious: see Lots 58 & 59), this
was the first time that the Post Office had announced an official issue date. 1/5/1924 was the issue
date for the New Colours KGV 1d green, 1½d red, 2d brown & 4d olive, plus the new value 3d blue (&
the 2/- maroon Kangaroo). So few First of May covers exist that this and the next lot are considered by
many as being among the "Crown Jewels" of Australian FDCs.
This is the first occasion for many years that a First of May cover has been offered at auction & it is
expected that the catalogue values will be shown to be well behind the real market values. By way of
offering some context to the issue of values, George Lang has advised that about four years ago he
sold a 1915 KGV ½d green FDC - three recorded - for $15,000 to a dealer, who presumably on-sold it
for a profit.
$US2000.
Australia's only "tripleton" and, as such, an item of great importance as well as the heightened visual
appeal from bearing an extraordinary combination franking of embossed & surface-printed stamps.
This issue was uprated in 1918 for the ½d War Tax & again when postage rates increased in 1920. At
that time, priority work for the embossing machines was for envelopes issued by the Post Office, so
the surface printed ½d was added. Sinfield's very fine example sold for $13,225 at our auction of
20/11/2004; & Schumann's less fine example sold for $6900 at our auction of 22/4/2006. This example
A great rarity, this block is considered by some to be one of the highlights of the Frankenstein
which it is not.) Multiples of the Laid Paper stamps are extremely scarce, and this is probably the
largest recorded multiple. There were no multiples in the Slade-Slade, Wiggins, "Espana", White or
Rivett-Carnac Collections. Judge Hamilton (1958) had a pair in ultramarine, Dale-Lichtenstein had an
unused pair, the "Manwood" Collection included a horizontal strip of 3 in the Prussian blue shade SG
DEPARTMENTALS: 'E.B.' (Education Board) in Blue on Rouletted 4d grey-violet, roughly separated at
minor blemishes. Rated RRRRR+. Presgrave recorded only one 'E.B.' cover, franked with a 2d.
Most Departmental Overprints were applied to sheets that were in some way defective. While a
partly-imperforate variety of this stamp has not previously been recorded, it is entirely feasible that a 4d
sheet sent for overprinting had been poorly or only partly rouletted.
shows part of the vertical "gutter" watermark line. (6 blocks)
Requests for Extensions - Terms of Sale Para 10
A request for an extension to submit a lot to a recognised expert or expert committee for a Certificate of Authenticity must be made in
writing prior to or on the day of the auction. Prestige Philately shall have an absolute discretion to not grant an extension. (In particular,
an extension will not normally be granted if the lot is offered with a recent Certificate of Authenticity, or one from a prominent authority,
or if the stamp(s) has/have perforated initials (perfins).) If an extension is granted, the buyer must make payment in full for the lot
including the buyer’s premium and any GST payable, in accordance with Paragraph 8 of our "Terms of Sale". The amount paid including
the buyer’s premium will be refunded in full if the lot is returned with an acceptable “bad” Certificate. All costs associated with
obtaining a Certificate shall be borne by the buyer, unless the lot is found to be not as identified in the catalogue in which case all costs
associated with obtaining the Certificate shall be borne by the vendor and refunded to the buyer.

Ex Lot 206
1915 long OHMS cover but with the header obliterated, 1d cancelled on arrival at London, small
'PASSED/BY CENSOR'-in-triangle handstamp, some soiling. The first enclosure headed "HMS Prince
George" & dated "8June1915" is from the ship's commander Charles Nicoles Tindal Carill-Worsley to
his mother: "...I am sending you an account of our doings since the landing of the troops on the
Gallipoli Peninsular on 25th April. You must excuse its being in pencil, but I wrote it with carbon
paper...so as to make 3 or 4 copies, but I send you the original...[signed]". The second enclosure is
the lengthy account on 14 quarto pages, with lots of colourful detail:
"...our station was inside the Dardenelles, about abreast of Morto Bay...we could see the
flotilla...coming up out of the mist from the direction of Tenedos...The 'River Clyde' (or the 'Trojan
Horse' as she is now always called) was run ashore at full speed on V Beach...This was the worst
landing place of the lot, and the best defended...I believe the authorities had hoped to get a good deal
further on the first day but we had given the Turks and their German friends much too much notice of
our intentions...The Turks stood their ground in the most splendid way...one of the officers, who looked
like a German, walked out in the calmest way and started prodding his men with a sword, I presume to
see if they were really dead...another man came out of a trench close by with a bag...and turn[ed] the
bodies over. He was evidently collecting their ammunition...We heard about the [Anzacs] from an
officer who had been with them. He said that they were simply magnificent, but that they would not
stop and entrench themselves...but went on with the remark that 'they had come to fight and not to
dig'...with the result that they got too far and were heavily shelled...[One Australian said] they were
much impressed with the German officers, who they said were absolutely fearless & full of dodges...a
German dressed as an English Staff Officer rode up...and asked to speak to the colonel & the adjutant,
who came out & walked towards him. When they had got fairly close he pulled out a revolver & shot
them both!..."
Our vendor advises that this marvellous eye-witness account turned up in an English auction of toys! It
is offered with a typed transcript, running to seven A4 pages. The lot also includes three coloured
prints of paintings of the Gallipoli landings 269x206mm (possibly a bookplate), 326x209mm &
657x435mm (both by Charles Dixon), these are all very fine; and a 1901 bookplate "The Prince
George at Spithead..." with some faint toning. (3 items + 4 prints)
overseas buyers appreciate the benefits of bidding in their own currencies. Prestige Philately is the only major
auction house that allows you to do this. With Prestige you may bid in any traded currency. Your bids will be
converted to $A at the rate applicable on the day of the auction. You are thereby protected against any fluctuations
prior to the sale.

Lot 218
218 E A - original handpainted horizontal essay (205x128mm) of a Biggles-like "Smithy" - apparently based on
a photo of Jim Nabours - & the "Southern Cross" in shades of blue highlighted with China white on
artboard (310x257mm), labelled "Comprehensive 'Rough' for Finished Line Original". Ex Reg Ferguson
& Derrick Ray. [Because this was a joint issue with Australia, the preliminary designs are relevant to
the Australian issue even though they are all inscribed 'NEW ZEALAND'. Richard Breckon has
confirmed that there is no preliminary artwork for the Joint Issue in the Australia Post Archives.
However, several die proofs inscribed New Zealand are held by Australia Post. This supports our
vendor's contention - with which we agree - that all preliminary designs can properly be treated - and
exhibited - as Australian material.
Lot 219
219 E A - a similar horizontal essay of a more believable "Smithy", the "Southern Cross" & a modern airliner in
shades of blue & highlighted with China white on artboard (310x257mm), labelled "Comprehensive
'Rough' for Finished Line Original". Ex Reg Ferguson & Derrick Ray.
224 ** A+ B1 1929 'AIR MAIL' Overprint Cooke Printing 3d as SG 112 but in the unrecorded shades of black &
deep dark bluish green 'JBC' Monogram lower-right corner block of 12 (3x4), most units well centred,
unmounted. Superb! An extraordinary proving block and an exciting new discovery 69 years after
issue. Ex Tony Williams. [With a complete sheet of the normal shade 3d black & blue-green SG 112 for
comparison]
Jerry Blair Certificate (2009) states "This block is fresh as issued and has not been altered in any
way. The colour is similar to that of the 3d colour error SG 98a...This block shows that the full story of
the shades/colours of the 3d Cooke printings has yet to be told as this stamp [the overprint] should not
exist in this colour. This is a spectacular & intriguing block of stamps that is worthy of a place in a
specialised collection of these issues."
