Prestige Philately - Auction No 145 Page: 25
Lot Type Grading Description Est $A
COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA - KGV - CofA Watermark
Lot 50
Lot 48
48 */** A/A- 2d scarlet Perf 11 Postal Forgery BW #103cc block of 4, well centred, some characteristic rough perfs,
the upper units with a couple of very minor blemishes, virtually full o.g. with the lower units being
unmounted, Cat $4300++. Ex Dr FE Wood. [The ACSC states "...multiples of the forgeries exist but are
rare"]
49 G A A1
5d yellow-brown BW #127, excellent centring, neat 'BALLARAT/ 2 /5P 22FE32/VIC' cds which is
believed to be the earliest recorded usage. [The ACSC states "The first reported issue was on 25
50 F A
1928 International Philatelic Exhibition Kookaburra M/S, CTO with central strike of the Exhibition
cds of 29OC28 (First Day of Issue) in green (rare thus) BW #133MSwa, large-part o.g.,
undercatalogued at $500. Ex George Lang: see also Lot 64. Ceremuga Certificate (2000). [For many
years the catalogue referred to cancels in red or "green", with no reference to blue cancels.
Consequently, the common blue impressions were routinely, and erroneously, called "green". The
1994 edition of the ACSC was the first to list all three colours. Examples of the genuine green cancels
are truly rare with only a handful having been recorded. Perversely, the ACSC 2007 Edition reduced
the catalogue value from $800 to $500! An example sold for $690 at our auction of 18/11/2006]
51 * B 1937-49 Robes Thick Paper £1 dull blue overprinted 'SPECIMEN' BW #216x vertical strip of 3, heavy
roller-ink applied to the reverse & some very minor consequent blemishes on the face, Cat $1500+. A
rare multiple of controversial status but at least you can be confident the overprints are genuine! [The
ACSC mentions such stamps that were "defaced with black ink". We have seen some of these and
they are truly appalling. We suspect this strip is from the same source but for some reason the
defacing ink was applied to the reverse] [Photograph above Lot 47]
evidence on the reverse of having previously been affixed in some type of record book. The only
example we have seen.
