Prestige Philately - Auction No 145 Jun 13, 2009
NEW ZEALAND (continued)
Lot Type Grading Description Est $A
Lot 218
218 E A - original handpainted horizontal essay (205x128mm) of a Biggles-like "Smithy" - apparently based on
a photo of Jim Nabours - & the "Southern Cross" in shades of blue highlighted with China white on
artboard (310x257mm), labelled "Comprehensive 'Rough' for Finished Line Original". Ex Reg Ferguson
& Derrick Ray. [Because this was a joint issue with Australia, the preliminary designs are relevant to
the Australian issue even though they are all inscribed 'NEW ZEALAND'. Richard Breckon has
confirmed that there is no preliminary artwork for the Joint Issue in the Australia Post Archives.
However, several die proofs inscribed New Zealand are held by Australia Post. This supports our
vendor's contention - with which we agree - that all preliminary designs can properly be treated - and
exhibited - as Australian material.
1,500 T
Lot 219
219 E A - a similar horizontal essay of a more believable "Smithy", the "Southern Cross" & a modern airliner in
shades of blue & highlighted with China white on artboard (310x257mm), labelled "Comprehensive
'Rough' for Finished Line Original". Ex Reg Ferguson & Derrick Ray.
