The folders all exhibit some faults & toning on the reverse: however, the artworks could be simply removed & attractively re-framed. Unique. (4 items) NEW GUINEA - 'G.R.I.' Overprints 500 Lot 213 Lot 214 213 * A- C1 1914-15 3½-4mm Spacing '1s.' on 1mk red SG 12, small natural paper-flaw at the base hardly detracts, Cat £2000. Gibbs Certificate (2009) states "Small natural resinous paper inclusion at lower-right". [Tim Rybak's very fine example sold for $3680 at our auction of 26/4/2008] 214 V B C1 1914-15 5mm Spacing '1d.' on 5d green Inverted 'd' SG 17e [Stg 2 Pos 7?], well centred, a little aged, on small piece with 'STEPHANSORT/13/ * ' "frozen" cds in blue, Cat £2000. An underrated error. Holcombe Certificate states "I have recorded only 8 copies [sic] of this variety...They appear to come from two differing positions on the setting. All are used. A rare variety." Rare: the "Ello" example was accompanied by a Germany Philatelic Society Certificate that stated "Only 50 copies of this value were issued". [Tim Rybak's example sold for $4370 at our auction of 26/4/2008. "Ello's" superb marginal example sold for $6612 at our auction of 14/3/2009] 4,000 T 216 V/F A B1 217 L Lot 216 Ex Lot 217 1913 Auckland Exhibition ½d to 6d SG 412-5 complete tied to KGV 1d Envelope by two strikes of the 'EXHIBITION/25MR14 11AM/AUCKLAND' cds, Cat £600++. A rare albeit philatelic cover. 1958 Trans-Tasman Flight archive of letters & copy letters between James Lyle (designer of the Australia & New Zealand Joint Issue), Reg Ferguson & the New Zealand Post Office regarding the Kingsford Smith essays & approved design, die proofs etc, one of which advises Lyle that Australia had caved-in & agreed to use his design; also a preliminary sketch by Lyle & copies of the photograph used for the portrait, Lyle's group of newspaper clippings that focus on complaints about design errors, a sheet of 80 of the Australian 8d, etc. In one letter, a bitter Lyle speaks of "the sad, sad story of the Smithy stamp..." He would have been cheered by Bill Hornadge's letter - also enclosed - defending Lyle's work & blaming the Australian PMG's Department for providing Lyle with inaccurate photographs.
