1879-96 Stamp Duy 45/- progreesive die proof - the letters 'J - L' not yet engaved - in black on<br />
off-white wove paper. Unique! Ex Purves. [The only other proof material recorded for this value are two<br />
completed die proofs, one of which is in the Royal Collection. Illustrated by Kellow at page 234]<br />
1879-96 Stamp Duty £5 hand-drawn stamp-size essay in pencil & watercolour wash on thin card, very<br />
similar to the approved version in which a number of design elements - lettering, numeral, corner &<br />
side ornaments - were changed. Ex Purves. A unique and delightful example of "art in miniature".<br />
[Illustrated by Kellow at page 234 where he states "A beautiful pencil-drawn design as adopted [sic]<br />
