GENUINENESS OF THE EPISTLE.<br />

This result, obtained by internal<br />

investigations, will be perfectly<br />

confirmed by the external testimonies in favour <strong>of</strong> the<br />

genuineness <strong>of</strong> the Epistle. Polycarp (according to Iren. adv.<br />

Hasr. v. 33 ; Euseb. iv. 14, v. 20, an immediate disciple <strong>of</strong> St<br />

<strong>John</strong>) writes (Phil. 7)<br />

Xpiarbv iv aap/cl ekrfh.v6e.vaL,<br />

allusion to 1 <strong>John</strong> iv. 3 (compared with ver. 2). Polycarp<br />

quotes these words, too, as a warning against those o'lrives diro-<br />

TrXavthcn /cevovs dvdpanrovs, and even introduces the expression<br />

used by St <strong>John</strong> concerning the same false teachers (7repl<br />
