YOURS TO
WHY SHOULD I VISIT
THE SUFFOLK COAST?
The Suffolk Coast, one of the UK’s finest landscapes – with 40 miles of Heritage Coast set
in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Under our big East Anglian skies you will find tranquillity and an invigorating sense of
space, even at the height of summer.
With so much to see it’s easy to leave the car behind and explore on foot or bicycle.
Whether you want to build sandcastles and eat ice-cream or discover some of Britain’s
rarest wildlife, you can do it here on the Suffolk coast.
Our charming seaside towns are great for family holidays and our historic riverside
villages are romantic places to stay and linger. Water is never far away and each new tide
brings light and movement, delighting the eye and relaxing the mind and body.
Away from the coast there are more secrets to discover. You’ll find beautiful churches
historic castles; Anglo-Saxon burial sites; windmills and a fairytale meare; mysterious
forests and leafy lanes; historic market towns and friendly, oak-beamed pubs you’re
guaranteed fantastic local food and a warm welcome wherever you go.

Take a journey through history when visiting the Suffolk Coast.
The famous Anglo Saxon burial site of Sutton Hoo, managed by the National Trust, is located
just outside Woodbridge; there are Norman castles at Framlingham and Orford, a 15th Century
fort at Felixstowe; a multitude of historic houses that open to the public through the Invitation
to View scheme; an abundance of wind and water mills throughout the District including
Woodbridge Tide Mill, one of the last working tide mills in the country and a series of Martello
Towers guarding the coast from Felixstowe to Aldeburgh.
Rendlesham Forest, near Woodbridge, is the home to one of the most infamous UFO sightings
of recent years. In December 1980, military staff based at nearby RAF Woodbridge Airbase saw
what appeared to be an alien spaceship land within the forest. The Forestry Commission
operate UFO trails throughout the Forest to take you through what happened that night.
Bringing us into the 21st Century is the Port of Felixstowe, which sits at the edge of the resort of
Felixstowe. The viewing area at Landguard offers spectacular views over the ports of Felixstowe
and Harwich and the multitude of container, passenger and cruise ships using these ports.
... SPORTS AND LEISURE
The coastal area offers a variety of leisure pursuits to suit all ages and abilities from golfing
on one of the spectacular links courses to taking a fishing charter out from Felixstowe Ferry
to birdwatching at Minsmere.
The heathland, coastal areas and small forests within the Area of Outstanding Natural
Beauty are perfect for all forms of outdoor recreation, with a variety of cycling, walking and
horse riding paths available.
For those rainy days there are indoor leisure centres and play facilities located throughout
the District that offer bowling alleys, soft play, swimming and other activities.
The rivers and estuaries offer plentiful opportunities for freshwater fishing and wildlife
spotting river trips along the Rivers Deben, Alde and Ore.
4

There are a surprising number of artists, potters and crafts people working throughout
the District, many of whom open their studios to the public during June for “Suffolk
Open Studios”.
Aldeburgh and nearby Snape Maltings Concert Hall are world renowned for their musical
connections through Benjamin Britten, Peter Pears and Eric Crozier, with concerts being
held throughout the year including the Aldeburgh Festival of Music and the Arts and
Snape Proms.
Other festivals include Art on the Prom in Felixstowe; Felixstowe Drama Festival;
Arts Framlingham Summer Festival; Saxmundham Arts Festival; Yoxfest and Aldeburgh
Poetry Festival.
The Henham Estate, near Blythburgh is host to the Latitude Festival in July and offers
YOURS TO
...INDULGE IN EATING OUT
Suffolk Coastal has a large variety of restaurants and pubs that serve food ranging from Michelin
Starred to local farm produce. Every village has a pub with character, many providing excellent
food in convivial surroundings. The hotels have great restaurants and there are a number of top class
restaurants and cafes serving local produce, organic meat and really fresh fish. Local smokehouses
provide smoked fish and chicken amongst other meats and local vineyards provide wine tasting
events and tours.
Families are catered for too with many cafes and restaurants that are happy to provide child sized
portions. Many of the premises have wonderful views over rivers and reed beds, which contribute
to the feeling of relaxation and contentment.
The Aldeburgh Food and Drink festival in October highlights the variety and quality of locally produced
food. UKTV Food has seen several of the farm shops and restaurants in the area nominated as Local
Food Heroes in 2007, for their contribution towards local food provision and the reduction of food miles.
New for 2008, many of the guest accommodation premises featured in this guide have signed
up to the “Suffolk Breakfast Initiative” to show their commitment to sourcing their breakfast
ingredients locally.
The most obvious attraction of Suffolk Coastal is the unspoilt coast and countryside.
Here, you’ll find almost limitless opportunities for walking, cycling and horseriding,
along with award-winning beaches.
The resort of Felixstowe is a haven for small children and the elderly with a wide, flat, 2 mile
long promenade. Further up the coast the more intimate towns and villages of Aldeburgh,
Dunwich, Orford and Walberswick offer a different variation on the seaside experience, from
wild shingle beaches to glorious sandy dunes.
SUFFOLK
COAST2008
The countryside is enchanting, ranging from a patchwork of gently rolling arable fields and small
woodlands to the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This is a very
special landscape, a fragile mosaic of heaths, forest, wetlands and coast that collectively support
some of the rarest wildlife in Britain. Here, there are many nature reserves to explore, waymarked
trails and three long-distance paths (leaflets available from Tourist Information Centres).
The area is particularly rich in birdlife. There are four river estuaries that teem with wildfowl and
wading birds from Autumn through to Spring. Coastal marshes play host to unusual birds such
as the bittern, marsh harrier and avocet, while the Sandlings Heaths are home to rare species
such as the nightjar.
...A SMALL SEASIDE TOWN WITH HUGE CHARM
A highly fashionable destination for holidays and day trips, Aldeburgh remains largely the
same as it has been for decades. While fishermen still sell their daily catch from huts on the
beach, the high street boasts a number of award-winning restaurants and bistros.
Independent shops and galleries line the street and along with Snape Maltings Concert Hall,
Aldeburgh provides the backdrop to a rich musical heritage, with Benjamin Britten’s worldrenowned
Aldeburgh Festival of Music and the Arts held in June.
On the seafront, the Moot Hall houses the town’s museum and is a focal point, with its
ancient timbers and outside staircase. At the top of the Town Steps, leading off the High
Street and up the cliff, there is a wonderful view over the roof tops and out to sea.
In nearby Leiston, the Long Shop Museum, provides a fascinating insight into the 250-year
old engineering history of Richard Garrett (the Richard Branson of his day), and Elizabeth
Garrett Anderson, the first female doctor. The RSPB’s flagship reserve at Minsmere is four
miles from Aldeburgh and The National Trust’s Dunwich Heath, is just eight miles. Two miles
from Aldeburgh, in Thorpeness, you can spend a day boating on the magical, early 20th
enables visitors to appreciate the abundance of wild flowers and wildlife.
The Town Trail, available through TIC’s, is a great way of finding out more about the town’s
history and interesting buildings.
In 2006, 'Country Life' magazine voted Framlingham the number one place to live in the country
and came runner up in 2005’s contest to find Englands Favourite Market Town.
The award winning Shawsgate Vineyard nearby offers winetasting, tours and a childrens play
...AN ATTRACTIVE & HISTORIC RIVERSIDE TOWN
Choose Woodbridge for its history, picturesque views and welcoming atmosphere. Nestling near
the head of the tidal reaches of the River Deben, Woodbridge has been chosen as an ideal place
for a settlement for over 1200 years. This location is still highly sought after. The Elizabethan
Shire Hall houses a museum celebrating the Suffolk Punch Horse and the local history museum.
Other landmark sights include the much-photographed historic Tide Mill and Buttrum's Windmill.
Across the river is the Anglo-Saxon burial ground of Sutton Hoo operated by the National Trust.
During the summer months all these attractions are linked by an open top bus service
on Thursdays and Saturdays.
Once you are in Woodbridge there are a host of independent shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants
Tasty Suffolk
YOURS TO DISCOVER
43
Even the words ‘Tasty Suffolk’ sound delicious!
Whilst you’ll come across a few household names,
many producers will be noted for their quality products
within food and drink enthusiast circles, on a regional
basis or even in their local area.
Suffolk Farmers’ Markets
Photos from Suffolk Tourism Partnership
You’ll find unsung local food heroes going about
their business with dedication and passion. And
before you leave to return home don’t forget to
stop at a farmers' market or farm shop to buy
some Suffolk produce so that the memory of
your visit lingers a little longer in your senses...
Local produce isn't simply about eating
and drinking, it encapsulates local cultural
distinctiveness, industrial skill, the broader
environment and an enjoyable leisure
experience.
Experiencing locally produced food and drink
which is distinctive to the area you've come to
visit really does add something special to your
holiday or day trip.
The landscapes of the county really do
influence the variety and quality of food and
drink produced. The coastline and inland
waterways provide great quality fresh fish and
shell fish. Oysters for example are grown along
certain stretches of the coast where the
growing conditions are more favourable.
A range of vegetables is produced in key
areas where the fertile soils are evident;
the sandy soil in some parts enables the
growing of asparagus where drainage is vital.
This has also led to a concentration of small
vineyards producing award winning English wines
whose yield and quality improves year on year.
Pastures and grazing land throughout the
county host dairy cattle herds whose milk is
used in a wide range of diary products,
including the production of ice cream, crème
fraiche and cheeses, whilst the presence of
beef cattle is evident and a greater awareness
in rare breeds has led to a great deal of
interest in the native Red Poll breed. The
breeding of pigs is extremely evident in the
county and this serves to endure the fine
reputation of Suffolk hams and bacon. The
forest and woodlands provide a range of
succulent wild game meat and is ‘a must try’.
Gradings and Symbols Explained
SUFFOLK COAST
All the accommodation featured in this guide has been quality assessed by either Visitbritain or the AA, or has recently
applied for a rating and is awaiting assessment. Please be aware that ratings may change throughout the year.
Properties are visited by trained assessors who award a quality score for every aspect of the experience, including the
comfort of the bed, the quality of the breakfast and dinner and, most importantly, the cleanliness as well as the warmth
of the welcome. Look out for the Visitbritain Gold and Silver awards and the AA Red or Gold Stars, which recognise
exceptional quality at all levels, and businesses who “go the extra mile”.
Enjoy England ratings made easy
One to Five Star Rating
(Small to Medium
sized Hotels)
One to Five Star Rating
(Guest Accommodation)
Red Stars recognise the very
best establishments within the
3,4 and 5 star category.
AA Merit % Score
In addition to the Star rating, each hotel is
given an AA Merit Score as a percentage. This
indicates the level of quality achieved within
each Star rating, which helps you to compare
hotels with the same number of Stars.
★ AA Inspectors' Choice
These hotels stand out as the very best in
the UK and the Republic of Ireland,
regardless of style. The selected Inspectors'
Choice hotels are identified by red Stars.
★ Highly Commended
AA inspectors determine a quality score as a
percentage to cover all aspects of a guest
accommodation, including service. The score
is then represented as a one - to five-Star
rating. Yellow Stars indicate that an
establishment is within the upper 10%
of the quality score range for a three-,
four- or a five-Star guest accommodation.
U Unconfirmed rating
A hotel or guest accommodation may have
an 'Unconfirmed' symbol because their Star
rating has not been confirmed. This may be
due to a change of ownership or because
the establishment has only recently joined
the AA rating scheme.
A AA Associate recognition
Establishments inspected and rated by
VisitBritain, VisitScotland or VisitWales
can pay to belong to the AA Associate
Hotel/Guest Accommodation Scheme.
You can be confident that all AA
Associate-recognised establishments
have Star ratings that meet the common
quality standards.
Pennant ratings
for campsites and caravan parks
Campsites and caravan parks are rated by
AA inspectors on a five-point scale. The
Pennant ratings increase with the quality
and variety of facilities a park offers.
The AA Pennant rating is only based on
the touring pitches and the facilities at
campsites and caravan parks.
Suffolk Breakfast Initiative
Suffolk has a great tradition
of pig farming and even
today it is estimated that 20% of the UK’s pork
originates from the county. The Suffolk Breakfast
Initiative has been developed to recognise our
food and farming heritage. Look out for
hospitality businesses displaying the logo as
you’ll be sure of a Tasty Suffolk experience.
Rose Awards 2008
The English Tourism Council’s annual
Rose Awards highlight and promote
selected high quality holiday caravan
parks that also provide a good proportion
of first class caravan holiday homes for hire.
How to be Suffolk Coast’s
favourite sort of visitor!
Help us reduce,
re-use and recycle!
We take our recycling
pretty seriously in Suffolk,
so it would be great if you
can help us by doing your
bit where possible. By
placing litter in bins or
taking it home to recycle
helps keep the area more
pleasurable for others.
Exploring locally can be great
fun, so why not consider walking
and the environment. When
getting out and about, try using
the bus or the train – you’ll
Rosette awards for restaurants
AA inspectors annually award Rosettes to restaurants for the quality of their food. Most
Star-rated hotels have their own restaurants and we also inspect these. Not all receive an
AA Rosette award, but they will generally serve enjoyable food of a reasonable standard.
Excellent restaurants that stand out in
their local area. The food is prepared
with care, understanding and skill, using
good-quality ingredients.
The best local restaurants, offering higher
standards and better consistency. Greater
precision is apparent in the cooking, and
there is obvious attention to the quality
and selection of ingredients.
Three Rosettes are awarded to outstanding
restaurants that demand recognition well
beyond the local area. The highest quality
ingredients receive sympathetic treatment,
and there is consistent timing, seasoning,
National Accessible Scheme
and judgement of flavour combinations. You
can expect excellent and intelligent service,
and a well-chosen wine list.
Four Rosettes highlight cooking that
demands national recognition. Dishes
demonstrate intense ambition, a passion for
excellence, superb technical skills and
remarkable consistency. An appreciation of
culinary traditions is combined with a desire
for exploration and improvement.
The food at a five-Rosette restaurant stands
comparison with the best in the world. It is
highly individual, benefits from breathtaking
culinary skills, and sets the standards to
which others aspire. There will also be a
knowledgeable and distinctive wine list.
Accommodation that displays one of the signs shown below are committed to accessibility.
When you see one of the symbols, you can be sure that the accommodation has been thoroughly
inspected against demanding criteria. VisitBritain has a variety of accessible accommodation in its
schemes, and the different accessible ratings will help you to choose the one that best suits your needs.
Mobility 1 - Typically suitable for a person with sufficient mobility to climb a flight of steps but
would benefit from points of fixtures and fittings to aid balance.
Mobility 2 - Typically suitable for a person with restricted walking ability and for those that
Mobility 3 - Typically suitable for a person who depends on the use of a wheelchair and
