WE WANT TO HELP YOU LAKE FOREST GARDEN CLUB is looking for anyone who ever wished they could grow something and watch it bloom and thrive. Yes, we are looking for women from Lake Forest to become active members of our club. We want you as a member if you are interested in beautifying your home or garden. We encourage civic beauty and study all aspects of the fine art of gardening with interesting, informative speakers each month. We promote the Christmas Decorating Contest each year in Lake Forest and we have a Garden Walk each spring of select gardens in our subdivision – always a privilege to attend. We exchange plants, ideas and friendship in nine months of informal meetings. You will receive practical information and instructions on the flora and fauna of our state. Members also take field trips, carpooling to different events or sites. Please call Lura Kauffman at 621-1659 or just attend our meeting at the Lake Forest Yacht Club on the first Thursday of the month at 9:45 a.m. Improvement Committee ~ Submitted by Tomasina Werner ~ Have you ever watched someone create a work of art? Perhaps you have created a work of art. Each of us has a creative spark within our being filled with creative energy that can be directed in many different ways. Ask yourself, “What have I created?” You will be surprised to realize you are the creator of many things. It might be as simple as a flower bed or as complex as an irrigation system for a landscape. It could even be as simple as being a part of a “dream team” with a desire for clean neighborhood medians and beautiful resurfaced streets. Think about it, what has been your best creation -- the one you are proudest of? My favorite was developing a fun and interesting curriculum for teaching 6-year olds in Sunday school, which I used for 44 years. Oliver Wendell Holmes once said, “The great thing in this world is not so much where we stand, as in what direction we are moving.” In what direction are you moving? Could you find a small window of time in your busy schedule where you can “sneak” in a block of time to do something special to help improve Lake Forest? Thousands of our neighbors are already doing just that by beautifying their own homes and landscapes. It’s amazing how little time it takes to make a major difference in the appearance of our surroundings – just moving all trash and garbage receptacles from curb sight until pickup day is an example. As you drive through Lake Forest, take time to notice the things you see in the yards of neighbors that you find unattractive. Are there things on the front porch or yard such as old, worn out children’s toys or debris that should be out of sight? Then notice the groomed lawns with beautiful mailboxes and peaceful porches with inviting swings, chairs and flowers. What a contrast! Now, think of your own home and surroundings. How do you feel about it? Are you doing all you can to make it a beautiful, peaceful atmosphere to come home to? If not, what would it take on your part, physically, to make that happen? Lake Forest Improvement Committee (LFIC) members are always thinking and working on ways to improve their own surroundings and that of Lake Forest. Since its reorganization in 2005, LFIC has been moving in the direction of their dreams through ideas to improve the surroundings and lifestyle of Lake Forest residents. New members are “welcome and needed.” Please consider coming to a meeting the first Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the 19th Hole to see if you would like to become a part of helping this group improve your neighborhood. Hostesses Dottie Zimmer, Barb Cummings, Alice Albright, Ann Armstrong and Glenda Kersey provided delicious refreshments and lovely Croton centerpieces which were also used as door prizes. New Inspiration Chairman, Elaine Maxime, presented two inspirations, one serious and one funny to get us off to a good start. An announcement was made about our ongoing Membership Drive and we would like to invite all Lake Forest ladies to join us for fun, friendship and to learn about gardening in our area! Barb Comstock, First Vice President, introduced speaker, Laurie Parker, author, wordsmith and garden collage artist. Ms. Parker speaker Laurie Parker Lura Kauffman (L) and brought copies of her 12th and newest book, The Garden Alphabet which is written in metered rhyme using names of flowers and plants and beautifully illustrated with her garden collages. She has been self-employed as an author of poetry and art for 15 years and participated in gardening with her mother and sister for many years but only became interested in her own garden three years ago when she purchased a house. She had interesting stories about her garden and her collage art – for instance, when positioning the tiny pieces of collage art, do not turn on the ceiling fan! And keep the cat away! All in all an excellent L-R) Lura Kauffman, LFGC President, speaker and a beautiful book. Meredith Foster, principal of Daphne High, Andy Jones, Agri-Science teacher,and We will, again, be helping Carol Robison, LFGC Treasurer. Daphne High School with their annual Fall Plant Sale on October 29th and November 5th from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the greenhouses behind the high school. Watch for the signs. The plants are very healthy, pre-fertilized and very reasonably priced and priced lower than the big box stores. We also presented a check to Andy Jones, Agri-science teacher at DHS to repair his well for the greenhouse. Door Prizes were won by Verne Boland, Jean Wildenhaus, Ruth Foss, Thomasina Werner, Linda Locklin and Lura Kauffman. The 50/50 prize was won by Lura Kauffman. Please join us on November 3rd for our meeting with fun, friendship and gardening tips. New members and guests are always welcome.
