The record was previously held by her sister, Stephanie Yoshimura ’04, set in 2004. • 12th out of 51 teams at the Eastern Swimming Championships in February Winter Track • Fourth in the Distance Medley Relay at the Delaware Valley Girls Track Meet at Swarthmore College LACROSSE Junior lacrosse star commits to UVA This spring Sloan Warren ’11 became the first Baldwin athlete to commit to an NCAA Division I program prior to her senior year. Warren has committed to play for the University of Virginia lacrosse team beginning in the fall 2011. The University of Virginia women’s lacrosse team was ranked eighth in Lacrosse Magazine’s 2010 preseason poll. A varsity starter since seventh grade, she has been an offensive powerhouse in the highly competitive InterAc League and has led the league in goals for three consecutive years. Sloan also was named to the All InterAc First Team and All Main Line First team for the last two years, and last year was awarded an All American Honorable Mention. She played on the highly selective Under Armour tournament in 2009 and 2008 with the best lacrosse players nationwide and was one of eight finalists for the prestigious Heather Albert Award for the 2009 Most Outstanding Player at U.S. Lacrosse National Championship held in Bel Air, MD last May. ALEX WAKE Alex Wake ’05 5K nets over $25,000 The seventh annual Alex Wake’05 Memorial 5K Run and Walk, held May 1, netted more than $25,000 for the perpetual scholarship in Alex’s name as well as funds for Baldwin athletics programs and the development of conflict resolution programs in the school community. Among the winners were Charlotte Matthai ’13, third; Arden Simone ’13, first; and Isabelle Schaffer’16, second, winners in the Girls 11 to 14 age division. Head of School Sally Powell accepts a mock check for $160,000 from Parents’ Association (PA) Treasurer Ellen Wang and President Patti Dietrich at the Parents’ Association Executive Board spring luncheon. The oversized check represents funds raised by the PA for the school during the academic year. People & Events Junior Gazelle Zerafati had an amazing spring. On April 26, she was awarded one of two $50,000 scholarships in the national Young Epidemiology Scholars Competition, sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the College Board in Washington, D.C. Zerafati won the competition for her investigation of migraines. A sufferer of the headaches herself, she surveyed her classmates and found that many of them were unaware of migraine symptoms or treatments, though sometimes the headaches were severe enough to miss school. She plans to continue her investigation with surveys at other schools. Just a couple of weeks earlier, on April 7, Zerafati won the Gold Medal for high school juniors in the Greater Delaware Valley Science Fairs. That prize, for her investigation of the affect of N-acetylaspartate (NAA) on brain cells called oligodendrocytes, netted her a full scholarship to Drexel University and an all-expense paid trip to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, which was held May B A L D W I N N E W S M A K E R S Baldwin junior wins national accolades for her scientific research Fourth graders crowd around the Hon. Gene E. K. Pratter, a federal court justice in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, during a tour of the James A. Byrne Federal Courthouse in Philadelphia in April. The tour followed the students’ fifth annual participation in a Naturalization Ceremony for more than 100 news citizens, presided over by Justice Pratter. The students performed an original poem about American holidays as part of the ceremony’s festivities. Justice Pratter is a former Baldwin trustee and the mother of an alumna, Paige Pratter Perrine ’94. The Parents’ Association (PA) showed its appreciation for Baldwin’s faculty and staff at the annual Faculty Staff Appreciation Day in February. Parents treated faculty and staff to breakfast and lunch on campus as well as a mug of their choice and a thank you card handmade by students. Hosting the event were PA President Patti Dietrich, Event Chairs Joan Grizos and Betsy Grosskopf, and PA Vice President Barbara Sprague. 9-14 in San Jose, CA. This project involved testing the brain cells of laboratory rats in various concentrations of NAA. Her results showed that a high concentration of the chemical causes a sharp decrease in the development of oligodendrocytes. This, in turn, interferes with the growth of the brain’s myelin sheath, a fatty covering that surrounds nerve cells and allows for efficient transmission of nerve impulses. This process is believed to be the core cause of the devastating genetic disorder Canavan disease. Zerafati, who also plays the violin and writes science articles for the school’s newspaper, The Hourglass, has not let fame and fortune go to her head. When asked in May how she felt about all the publicity and attention she has received in the media for her accomplishments, she just shrugged and said, “Right now I am more concerned with taking my AP and Baldwin (final) exams.” S P R I N G E C H O E S 2 0 1 0
