Lower School Poetry
t H E s N o W b a L L
By Skylar Zachian ’21
It flops
Drops
Plops
And spins like a top.
It’s cold
Can mold
Be rolled
And get old.
It can melt
Be felt
Make a welt
Or look like gelt.
A snowball is round.
It can be found
On the ground.
A snowball is white
Can be used in a fight
And is a beautiful sight!
Skylar Zachian’s poem won first prize in the Gladwyne
Library Junior Authors Contest’s first grade poetry division
in March 2010.
By Jane Bradley ‘17
Sticks and stone will break my bones,
But names will never hurt me?!?!
Names can hurt a lot
It’s what they’re meant to do.
Words can hurt as much as fists,
And leave scars behind too.
Why do you exclude me
From the table where we have lunch?
Why do you think that hurts me less
Than if you gave me a big fat pinch?
You yell and scream and whine a lot,
You make me feel so small.
You shame me and you ridicule,
And here’s what’s worst of all:
You make the rest of us so sad,
You make us feel so blue,
You make us feel rejected
And angry sometimes, too.
Why do you act that way?
What makes you so, so mad?
You must be full of pain inside,
To make us feel so bad.
Lay down your sticks,
Put down your stones,
Forget names that offend.
Be kind, be fun, be gracious, too.
You might just find a friend.
Jane Bradley’s poem won second prize in the
children’s division of the fifth annual Charlotte
Miller Simon Poetry Celebration in March 2010.
