Ihave made it no secret that I am very proud of our students and their accomplishments. I regularly boast of their remarkable ability to problem solve, think creatively and express themselves articulately. At gatherings with parents and alumnae, I often share anecdotes and personal stories with you about our students and their achievements, and our publications – both print and online - list their many awards and honors for you to admire. But in spite of all our efforts to share our good news with you, it is difficult to convey exactly what our students are doing to deserve all this praise. This issue of Echoes attempts to give you a small glimpse of just what makes Baldwin students so special. Instead of merely talking about their great work, we have decided to show you their great work. In this issue, you will read essays and poems by students in all three of our divisions. One of those students, graduating senior Caroline Durlacher, has won numerous awards for her writing and has been selected as one of three students in the country to be featured in an upcoming HBO special titled Master Class. You also will see some samples of student photography and sculpture including the cover photo MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD In Praise of Student Work “Our students are bright, inquisitive, perceptive and creative. They are truly unique. And nothing illustrates this better than the product of their own efforts — their work.” of this magazine by sophomore Jessica Gubanich. Her research is too lengthy to publish here, but we are excited to tell you about junior Gazelle Zerafati, who has won national honors and scholarship awards for not only one piece but also two pieces of scientific research that rival the work of a college professor. Although it is impossible to show you all of the extraordinary work of our students, the writing and art that do appear in this issue of Echoes exemplify the talents and achievements of a typical Baldwin girl. Our students are bright, inquisitive, perceptive and creative. They are truly unique. And nothing illustrates this better than the product of their own efforts. We can tell you about their honors; we can display their plaques and trophies; but, ultimately, the proof is in the work they produce. So please take a few moments to enjoy the student work featured in this issue. Appreciate the effort and talent that has gone into their writing, their art, their research. And share with me my pride in our Baldwin thinking girls, soon to become accomplished Baldwin women. —Sally M. Powell
