«Iron Man 3» to Film
in Fort Lauderdale
Broward officials say scenes from «Iron Man 3» will
soon be filming in and around Fort Lauderdale. Filming
of the third and final installment of the superhero
franchise is expected to begin on Oct. 1, in locations
in Dania Beach and other neighboring South Florida
communities, Broward Office of Film & Entertainment
Commissioner Noelle Stevenson said. «We have had two
very exciting back to back years of major film production
in Greater Fort Lauderdale – we rocked with ‘Rock of Ages’
last summer with Tom Cruise, Russell Brand and Alec
Baldwin. Now we have the marvelous Marvel comic book
hero,» Stevenson said in a statement. «Of significance
is that the filmmakers can conveniently shoot a variety
of landscapes here, from city skyline to 23 miles of
pristine sun-splashed beaches to nature unleashed in
the Everglades.» Robert Downey Jr. will return as Iron
Man in the film, which includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben
Kingsley, Rebecca Hall, Don Cheadle, and Jon Favreau.
Stevenson said recent movie and TV filming has brought
millions of dollars to South Florida.
Hallandale residents want new
color palette for bridge to beach
Some call it flamingo pink. Others say it looks like
a Pepto-Bismol bottle that exploded. And many say
they don’t even know how to describe the new color
of the bridge on Hallandale Beach Boulevard – except
to say that it “it’s wrong.” “It sticks out like a sore
thumb,” said Hallandale Beach Mayor Joy Cooper. The
general distaste for the Shoreline Coral hue that has
recently been painted onto the bridge – that ushers
people from the mainland to State Road A1A has led
City Manager Renee Crighton to look into some other
options - including repainting. Crighton is expected
to bring it up at the Sept. 19 meeting. The colorless
concrete structure, owned by the state, was in need of
updating, said city spokesman Peter Dobens. The city
spent $33,000 to clean and paint it. No one seems
to know whose idea it was to pick that particular
color was, but it came at the recommendation of the
city’s beautification board. Cooper said she never
supported the bright color, which is also in the City Hall
breezeway. Not everyone is so picky about the paint.
Commissioner Keith London says while he doesn’t have
an opinion on the color, he does want the city to come
up with a color scheme city wide. “What qualified them
to pick the color,” he asked. When the color popped up
a few weeks ago the comments and calls to the city and
city leaders began. The color “clashes” with the natural
surroundings, said Jerry Jensen, who lives in a nearby
condominium. The bridge, which is the gateway to the
beach, should be neutral and blend in with the water,
sky or landscape, he said. Or at the very least, match the
city’s iconic beach ball water tower that can be seen in
the background.
Jeb Bush to publish book
about immigration in 2013
Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush is writing a book with
a title that cuts directly to the emotion and complexity
of the subject: Immigration Wars. “Immigration is an
important part of our country’s success and if policies
are reformed, can be part of restoring and sustaining our
greatness as a nation,” Bush said in an announcement
by the publisher Wednesday. Bush, who met his wife
in Mexico and speaks Spanish, has urged the GOP to
moderate its views and rhetoric on the divisive issue,
though a harder line still pervades the Republican
platform. He is writing the book — formally called
Immigration Wars: Forging an American Solution —
with Clint Bolick, vice president for litigation as the
Goldwater Institute and research fellow with the Hoover
Institution. “The book will present a comprehensive
solution based on two core principles: immigration is
vital to America’s future, fueling its growth, vibrancy
and creativity; yet any true and enduring solution must
adhere to the rule of the law,” read an announcement
by Threshold Editions, an imprint of Simon & Shuster.
Publication is scheduled for Spring 2013. Immigration
reform has been elusive. Former Florida U.S. Sen. Mel
Martinez, a Republican, was part of a failed effort in
2007 and his replacement, Sen. Marco Rubio, has also
encountered resistance to his plan to grant legal status
to some children of illegal immigrants.
Apple Unveils iPhone 5
Apple unveiled the latest model of its flagship
iPhone line on Wednesday, the iPhone 5, calling it the
world’s thinnest smartphone. Apple also announced
updates and upgrades to iPods, iTunes, Siri, iOS 6 and
even new headphones – called EarPods. As expected,
the iPhone 5 includes many new features. It’s just
7.6 millimeters thick (that’s 18 percent thinner than
the 4S). It’s got a bigger screen, a faster processer
and access to super-fast LTE 4G cellular networks. It’s
also 20 percent lighter than the present model. The
cost remains the same as the old 4S model -- $199 for
the 16GB model, $299 for the 32GB model and $399
for the 64GB model. Pre-orders start Sept. 14, and it
officially lands on Sept. 21. Consumers nostalgic for
the iPhone 4 can get one for free if they sign a twoyear
contract. An iPhone 4S will run $99 with the same
contract. The iPhone 5 camera is crystal-covered in
the 5, with better low-light performance and quicker
photo capture. There’s also a panorama mode on the
new model. They’re 28 megapixels, which means the
higher-end models with greater memory may be more
appealing to image-happy consumers. Shared Photo
Streams have also been added to the upgraded lens
and looks. Users can select images and push them to
friends who can then comment and share. The iPhone
5 uses an A6 chip, which is 22 percent smaller but still
faster for better graphics performance. As expected,
there is a new connector for the new models. It’s called
Lightning and the hope is it’s lightning fast. Apple’s
internet browser, Safari, can now be taken full-screen,
without navigation bars and buttons. With mobile web
views through the roof, this will only increase ease and
volume of consumption. Siri has been upgraded, as well,
for voice-recognition delivery of sports scores as well as
3D, turn-by-turn directions in the new iOS6 maps. Apple
CEO Tim Cook mentioned some sales success stories
before unveilings the goods.
•iPads have extended their market share from 62 to
68 percent - despite increased competition
•MacBooks have captured 27 percent of the market,
and that’s helping kill off desktops
•Cook also got to introduce Foo Fighters toward
the end of the presentation, upping his cool cred
tremendously. The iPod lineup is being updated, too.
The Nano is getting a larger screen, for starters, and a
more rectangular, retro look. The 2.5-inch screen is the
largest ever in the Nano line, according to the Mercury
News’ Troy Wolverton. A 16GB Nano will cost $150. It
also will include an FM tuner that can pause live radio,
more like a DVR. There is more battery life, too, 30 hour,
as well as video playback. The new iPod Touch is the first
update in two years. It runs on the A5 chip, not the new
A6 that’s in the iPhone 5. There’s a 5-megapixel camera,
too. Siri is being added (its fourth device) and the Touch
will now come in five different colors for the first time. A
32GB Touch will cost $300 and the 64GB is $400.
