the future the next mining zones Sainte LUCE AND PETRIKY Mandena is the first operational zone, where production has commenced and will continue until the deposit has been exhausted. The future mining zones of Sainte Luce and Petriky have been explored and the mineral deposits confirmed. Noting the projected global demand for ilmenite is anticipated to increase quickly and significantly in the coming years, the schedule originally envisaged for Sainte Luce and Petriky may be accelerated. point of reference to realistically comprehend changes the mining project will bring. Effective communication, through permanent dialogue, will be important when explaining the project and its expected impacts, both positive and negative. Past experience, and building on the successes and lessons learnt from Mandena, will help guide QMM’s approach and subsequent activities so it may continue to positively contribute to the region and its citisens. QMM has had an active presence in these zones for many years. Engaging in frequent and ongoing dialogue with the community and authorities, informal public consultations have taken place since the 1990’s. As the project moves forward in Sainte Luce, preliminary baseline studies are underway, including a land use study, which explores land tenure, culture, customs and sacred sites and involves participatory mapping and continuous, interactive relations with the population. These studies will lead to the Social and Environmental Impact Assessment (SEIA), a process that could take several years. Sainte Luce is a significantly larger site than Mandena. The same considerations, concerns and challenges will be raised, but on a much greater scale. The Future future Progress so far Sainte Luce -- A conservation zone totalling approximately 1000ha has been established, as well as a research centre. -- Thirteen women from the villages bordering the conservation zone are being employed to work in the camp canteen. The women prepare breakfast, lunch and dinner for those working at the research centre and in the conservation zone. -- Guards have been trained and hired from surrounding villages to protect the conservation zone and maintain the grounds. -- A CSB, the only health centre for the population of 3,800 residing in the three villages of Sainte Luce, was constructed in 2004 through QMM funding. Petriky -- A conservation zone totalling 120ha has been established, as well as a research centre. -- QMM funded the construction of a secondary school in the village of Loharano, closest to the ilmenite deposit. In 1999 a semi-permanent structure made of wood was constructed and in 2005 the present concrete structure was built. -- Public consultations have been carried out since 1998.
