It has been a long road from exploration to today. QMM’s
foundations rest on work that has extended over the decades.
These undertakings have led to exceptional knowledge and
management of the region’s biodiversity, approaches and
structures that aim to avoid the traps of enclave industries,
most notably embedding the project within the larger regional
framework of long-term social, economic and environmental
development, and transparent, measurable commitments
to a Net Positive Impact (NPI) over fifty years. QMM has
made extensive investments in its employees, its partnerships
and its involvement with local communities. Through
ongoing engagement, a shared commitment to the region’s
development has been fostered. Identifying communities
surrounding its operations and those from which it draws
its employees as key stakeholders, QMM is dedicated to

their development needs. QMM will ensure it continues to
support relevant initiatives while maintaining the potential to
foster meaningful development.
As the project evolves, challenges will be ever persistent.
Today, QMM must continue to devote attention to the
management of expectations so they are realistic. This must
be done more effectively than in the past and should be
approached as much as possible through partnerships rather
than QMM acting alone. QMM must improve in the delivery
of its partnerships, work together more effectively with its
many stakeholders and ensure regional development is a
shared endeavour. This will require strong leadership, ongoing
engagement and permanent dialogue. Institutions established
for the development of the region through almost two
decades of efforts need to be revitalised. QMM is working
to see this is achieved. Lastly, QMM must ensure it follows
though on its commitments and delivers its contributions so
these outcomes generate positive impacts.
Once placed in the larger picture, it is evident much has been
achieved thus far and key foundations on which to continue
building are well positioned. Recognising it takes a sustained
and collaborative effort, as well as time to bring about
meaningful change, QMM is committed to the long-term and
will continue to ensure the project’s success for not only itself,
but for the people and country of Madagascar.
