DRUG ABUSE POLICY AND PROCEDURES<br />

(ABSTRACT)<br />

The Board prohibits the use, possession, and/or distribution of any drug, alcohol, tobacco, or steroids on school premises, at<br />

any event away from the school premises that is sponsored by this Board, and on any vehicle provided by this Board<br />

transporting students to and from school or any school activity. Compliance with a drug-free standard of conduct at all school<br />

functions is mandatory for all students. Students suspected of being involved with drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or steroids will be<br />

identified, evaluated, and reported in accordance with the law. Assessment will be provided by individuals who are certified by<br />

the New Jersey State Board of Examiners as substance awareness coordinators or by individuals who are appropriately<br />

certified by the New Jersey Board of Examiners and trained in alcohol and other drug abuse prevention. A student who uses,<br />

possesses, or distributes drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or steroids on school premises or while attending a school-sponsored<br />

activity, will be subject to discipline, which may include suspension or expulsion, and may be reported to appropriate law<br />

enforcement officers. Students suspected of involvement with drugs, alcohol, or steroids will be offered appropriate treatment<br />

and remediation. Treatment services for students who are affected by alcohol or other drug use will be provided by individuals<br />

who are certified as substance awareness coordinators or who are otherwise appropriately trained in drug and alcohol<br />

prevention, intervention, and follow-up. The complete policy/procedure can be obtained in the Board of Education<br />

Office, file code 5131.6.<br />

ELECTRONIC DEVICES<br />

The use of electronic communication and entertainment devices is not permitted at school during the school day. Students will<br />

surrender them to the school authorities and will be referred to the appropriate administrator for discipline.<br />

Students are not permitted to carry pagers or “beepers” at school. To do so is a violation of NJ Statute 2C:33-19.<br />

The use or open display of cellular phones in the building during school hours is prohibited.<br />

EMERGENCY SCHOOL CLOSINGS<br />

In the event it becomes necessary not to open school because of inclement weather or other emergencies, a special<br />

announcement will be made over radio WOR (710 AM), WCBS (880 AM), WINS (1010), Jukebox Radio (103.1 FM), NJ12<br />

News, the Internet www.weatherclosings.com, www.WOR710.com, www.1010WINS.com. and Cable stations from <strong>River</strong><br />

Edge and Oradell.<br />

The fire siren will be blown in Oradell at 7:15 am to announce the closing of the <strong>River</strong> <strong>Dell</strong> <strong>Regional</strong> <strong>School</strong>s. The number to<br />

call for school closings is 261-4230 or 261-4231.<br />

Parents and students should call the school (599-7200) for information concerning school closing during inclement weather.<br />

Listen to the message on voice mail.<br />

EXAMS – MID TERMS & FINALS<br />

Any student absent from an exam MUST present a note from a parent/guardian prior to the make up exam to the<br />

Attendance Officer. Students will not be permitted into a make up exam without this note. Students must have their<br />

textbook(s) or a check for the replacement of texts or materials as an admission ticket to the scheduled Exam. If text(s),<br />

materials or payment is not presented at the beginning of the exam, the student will not be admitted to the actual exam. They<br />

will need to then take their exam during the scheduled make up exam time.<br />

EXTRA HELP<br />

Extra help is available before and after school or by special arrangement. Students should contact the teacher to make these<br />

arrangements.<br />
