It’s hard to make good on a mission to hold polluters
and the government responsible while being
challenged financially. Our would-be opponents
have nearly endless resources while we, still a small
fledgling environmental organization, are supported
by a patchwork of reduced resources. But despite the
continuing economic challenges of 2011, Rock the Earth
soldiered on, Defending the Planet One Beat at a Time
for our eighth year.
Overall, 2011 was another year of great success, and
it was also a year in which we saw changes across a
broad spectrum of areas. For example, the economic
support from the Educational Foundation of America
that Rock the Earth received in 2009 and 2010 had
expired. At the same time, we sought new and creative
ways to keep up with a busy environmental docket,
a healthy Education and Outreach effort, new and
expanded programs, and a decent amount of needed
turnover in several key positions in our almost entirely
volunteer organization.
Combined with less overall grant dollars, reduced
corporate sponsor support, and highly challenged
individual giving, 2011 was one of our hardest years to
date. Despite all of these factors, once again victories in
key areas were realized, new income streams established,
and new partnerships were made.
In the end, Rock the Earth only realized these advances
and thrived due to the hard and generous work of our
volunteers, our Volunteer Staff, our Board of Directors
and our Advisory Board. 2011 also saw the return of
founder Marc Ross into the role of Executive Director,
helping ground the organization and develop a roadmap
for future success.
We also celebrated numerous successes, including our
most successful and far-reaching Earth Day events in our
history, a Summer Education & Outreach Tour that, while
not at the level of our benchmark 2009 Tour, was still a
slight increase over 2010, and we celebrated maintaining
the substantive programs to protect the environment that
are the hallmark of who we are.
Some of the highlights contained within this 2011 Annual
Report are:
Rock the Earth, along with a coalition of
conservation, sportsmen and wildlife groups,
continued to prosecute its second lawsuit in the
Federal District Court of Colorado to prevent
the federal government from leasing Colorado’s
Roan Plateau under a drilling plan that will
needlessly damage important wildlife habitat,
traditional uses and cherished public lands.
For the first time in our organization’s history, we led
a citizen activation campaign on an international
issue, collecting nearly 1,200 signed letters to
Chevron asking that the company withdraw plans
to industrialize Western Australia’s Kimberley
region, a project suggested to us and executed in
collaboration with Australian musician John Butler.
For the second time in four years, Rock the Earth
co-sponsored a community service project with
Revision International to commemorate Earth
Day, helping to expand a community garden in
one of the most impoverished neighborhoods in
Denver. We also held additional Earth Day events
in Chicago, Atlanta and Phoenix.
Rock the Earth expanded its highly successful
cellular telephone collection and recycling
campaign, which kept over 3,000 cell phones out of
landfills, preventing the leaching of toxins into soils
and groundwater. This notable achievement was
a result of a successful partnership between Rock
the Earth, Musictoday, Pace Butler, the University
of North Carolina at Greensboro, festival producers,
artists, music venues, record labels, and of course,
the thousands of people who donated phones.
For the sixth consecutive year, Rock the Earth
created compelling environmental programming on
the Solar Stage at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts
Festival, one of the nation’s largest music festivals,
with a series of artist interviews, panel discussions
and musical performances on the theme of Social

Change Through Music. In addition, for the third time in
as many years, we hosted Green Screens Presented by
Rock the Earth, a series of award-winning environmental
films, in Bonnaroo’s Cinema Tent.
Rock the Earth’s volunteer legal and technical staff
reviewed and/or worked on 16 separate, substantive
issues and projects brought to our attention by Rock the
Earth supporters in the music community.
At the end of 2011, Rock the Earth had 1747 members in 49
states. Over 36,000 people are now in our mailing list database.
Over a third of our members and the constituents in our
database have volunteered to assist Rock the Earth in some
way – from tabling concerts and festivals, to providing
legal and technical assistance, to grantwriting and helping
us with publicity.
Rock the Earth volunteers have donated more than 10,000
hours supporting our mission and activities.
Without a singular significant source of funding, Rock the
Earth managed to have a presence at 137 concert dates
throughout the United States in 2011, and had a full-time
team that traversed the country for 18 weeks between
May and October.
In 2011, Rock the Earth raised nearly $90,000 from
memberships, sponsorships, donations, grants and auctions.
The music industry, including more high-profile artists,
continued to embrace Rock the Earth in 2011, leading us
to collaborate with, among others, Journey, Foreigner
and Night Ranger, My Morning Jacket, Ray
LaMontagne, Umphrey’s McGee, John Butler Trio
and the Vans Warped Tour.
Rock the Earth received national and international press
in a growing list of media outlets, including CBS News,
Artist Direct, Spinner, ListenUp Denver, Colorado
Music Buzz, Music News Nashville, while over 12,000
people followed Rock the Earth using social networking
sites (Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, LinkedIn, YouTube).
Rock the Earth held a benefit concert in Denver with the
band Railroad Earth as well as a silent auction, resulting
in $8,000 raised for our organization.
Rock the Earth accomplished all of the above (and more)
with only a full-time paid Executive Director and a full-time
Office Administrator.

Rock the Earth continued to advance, solidifying our place as
a fixture in the music community and also serving as a huge
asset to the environmental community. In 2011, we reached
out and connected with new artists and corporate partners,
leveraging nearly 34,000 environmentally concerned and
music-loving constituents to bring about environmental
awareness and change. With the growing spirit of community
in mind, some of our most significant work took place in
partnership with other groups. Not only did we continue to
prosecute one major piece of litigation in the Federal Courts
in partnership with other environmental groups, but we also
saw success in implementing a coordinated campaign to
educate artists, promoters and fans regarding the deleterious
impact from cruise ships in partnership with Friends of the
Earth and Reverb.
As mentioned, the year wasn’t without struggles with regard to
funding. In the wake of reduced foundation and corporate donations,
Rock the Earth relied more on individual grassroots memberships in
2011, resulting in a fairly balanced stream of income sources. Nearly
$50,000 (56%) came from businesses, special events and grants,
while the balance (44%) was from individual memberships. All of
this combined to provide the organization with a more rounded and
sustainable funding plan, and positions Rock the Earth for increased
success from these funding sources in 2012.
I’m encouraged that Rock the Earth’s successes in 2011 provides
us with obvious potential for new growth in uncharted areas
in 2012. Rock the Earth remains committed to continuing our
work of helping preserve America’s most threatened natural
spaces and of holding polluters and governmental entities
responsible for their actions. We will continue to educate and
activate thousands of environmentally concerned, music-loving
fans, inspiring them to take action to create a sustainable and
healthy planet, and we’ll continue to look for opportunities to
work with a wider variety of artists. Meanwhile, with every
passing year, it becomes clearer that Rock the Earth steadily
continues to grow closer to reaching our goal of being the
preeminent environmental advocacy organization
working with and on behalf of the music community.

Environmental Accomplishments
We are proud to report that in 2011 Rock the Earth’s
environmental advocacy and educational projects continued
to expand, impacting environmental issues and the public in
profound ways.
We continued to prosecute our second lawsuit in federal court,
expanded our program to keep thousands of cellular telephones out of
landfills, and continued to see the very real and positive results from
education and advocacy campaigns which we have been working on
over the last few years. We also, for the first time in our history,
took on an artist-suggested international issue, leading to not only a
national education campaign, but also to an activation and letter-writing
campaign with significant and measureable outcomes!
The music community continued to embrace Rock the Earth by
tapping us for the sixth time to conduct environmental education at
Bonnaroo, the largest festival in the United States, for the fourth
time at Summer Camp, and for the first time at the Sweetwater
420 Festival and at the All Good Festival. In addition to our
annual work on the Bonnaroo Solar Stage, we once again headed up
Green Screens Presented by Rock the Earth, an environmental
film series, in the Cinema Tent.
All the while, Rock the Earth’s experienced legal and technical team
continued to move forward on several new issues, while continuing
to research and investigate other issues brought to us by the music
community.
Buckhorn Mountain
January 2011 On December 31, 2010, Rock the Earth presented
formal comments to the U.S. EPA regarding the future (2013)
General National Pollutant Discharge Elimination Permit
for Vessels (i.e., cruise ships). In our comments to the current
2009 permit, we made suggestions for improvements to be made
when the permit is renewed in 2013, including asking that EPA take
a harder look at certain discharges, that cruise ships be required
to publish discharge monitoring reports, and that there be greater
transparency and education on the part of cruise lines vis-à-vis
passengers and customers.
January 2011 On January 18, Rock the Earth submitted a comment
letter encouraging the National Forest Service to take a hard look
at the Buckhorn Mountain Exploration Project, a proposed
plan to significantly expand gold mining and exploration activities in
North Central Washington State. Without appropriate protections,
the proposed activities are anticipated to impact wildlife movement,
water quality and air quality, increase invasive species, and fragment
wildlife habitat.
March 2011 Rock the Earth advocated for the continued
cleanup of North Carolina’s Pigeon River, a waterway of
importance to legendary guitarist Warren Haynes. For several
years, Rock the Earth legal and technical staff have been
monitoring and commenting on the discharge permit for a paper
mill near Canton, North Carolina, which mill has had repeated
violations of the Clean Water Act. Rock the Earth encouraged
constituents to send letters to the North Carolina Department of
Environment, requesting more stringent discharge limits for the
mill so as to protect the ecosystem as well as the economic and
cultural value of the river.
April 2011 For the second time in four years, Rock the Earth
co-sponsored a community service project with the Revision
International, a Denver-based nonprofit organization supporting
local actions that lead to global sustainability. With Revision, Rock
the Earth helped to expand a community garden at the Kepner
Middle School, in Denver’s Westwood neighborhood. The garden
was created to grow fresh, healthy, organic produce for the school
and the community, which is considered a “food desert,” lacking
easy-to-obtain local and organic vegetables and fruit. In Chicago,
Illinois, Rock the Earth partnered once again with Friends of the
Park, cleaning, trail mulching, and helping with a prairie burn in the
Dunning Creek Conservation Area. In Atlanta, Georgia, Rock the
Earth Board Member James Gooch led a Social Change Through
Music discussion with artists and activists at the Sweetwater
420 Festival. Finally, back in Denver, Rock the Earth partnered
with Green Garage on a cell phone collection campaign, and
Executive Director Marc Ross was a featured speaker at the

May to August 2011 Rock the Earth conducted cellular
telephone recycling campaigns at various music festivals and
during our Summer Education & Outreach Tour across the
United States, resulting in the collection of over 3,000 cell
phones. Participating festivals included Summer Camp, Del
Fest, Mountain Jam, Bonnaroo, High Sierra, All Good
and Floydfest, as well as on the North American Tour by
Journey, Foreigner, and Night Ranger. These collection
campaigns were conducted in partnership with Pace Butler
and LiveNation/Musictoday.
June 2011 Rock the Earth in collaboration with the University
of North Carolina at Greensboro, led a cell phone collection
campaign, resulting in over 650 cell phones collected and being
diverted from possible disposal in landfills.
June 2011 Rock the Earth legal and technical staff submitted
comments to the National Park Service on the Draft
Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for a new Winter
Use Plan for Yellowstone and Grand Teton National
Parks. The DEIS contains seven possible alternatives
for the Winter Use Management of the Park Units. Since
2002, Rock the Earth has actively opposed all plans that
have allowed for the continued use of snowmobiles in the
Parks, due to the fact that the use of snowmobiles is both
harmful to the environment and negatively impacts visitor
experience. Further, the use of snowmobiles is inconsistent
with legal requirements to protect Park resources. Although
initially banned from the Parks in 2000 after years of study,
and even though continued environmental reviews over the
past decade have continued to provide evidence supporting
a ban, NPS has allowed continued snowmobile access under
a series of temporary extensions.

Environmental Accomplishments
June 2011 At the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, the largest
music festival in the United States, Rock the Earth hosted daily
environmental panels and interviews on the Solar Stage featuring
John Bell (Widespread Panic), Ben Sollee, Greensky
Bluegrass, Abigail Washburn & the Village, Hanggai, The
Head & the Heart, Rotary Downs, Aunt Martha, Aaron
“Woody” Wood, and Jaik Willis. Additional participants in panels
discussing how activists and artists collaborate to bring about social
change were: Zack Smith (Rotary Downs), Ayn Pivonka (Gulf
Restoration Network), Shannon Foley (Love Hope Strength),
Katie Ries (Bonnaroo Carbon Shredders and Urban Land
Scouts), Scott Swimmer (DRUM Strong), Keith Wood (Defy
Thirst), John Snover (Hear the Music Live), and Stephanie
Hoffer (Oceana). Green Screens Presented by Rock the Earth
drew standing-room-only crowds to the festival’s Cinema Tent each
day and featured screenings of the Sundance-screened film The Last
Mountain, SoLA: Louisiana Water Stories, The Vanishing of
the Bees, and Dive! Pre- and post-show programming featured
Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Benjamin Jaffee (Preservation Hall
& Preservation Hall Jazz Band), Jon Bowermaster (SoLa),
Natasha Noordhoff (Gulf Restoration Network), George
Langworthy (Vanishing of the Bees), Tim Carbone (Railroad
Earth), Jeremy Seifert (Dive!), Anna Rachael Borofsky (Clean
Vibes) and Ashley Hillis.
July 2011 Rock the Earth submitted formal comments to EPA
regarding a proposed new Federal Guidance Document for the
determination and management of wetlands that come under the
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ federal jurisdiction and regulation.
Though a step in the right direction to greater ecosystem protection,
Rock the Earth remains concerned about “isolated wetlands” – those
bodies of water seemingly unconnected to any flowing surface body
of water – which may or may not be adequately protected by the
new guidance document.
August 2011 In partnership with John Butler, Rock the Earth
commenced an education, outreach, and advocacy campaign to
protect Western Australia’s Kimberley Region, an incredibly
biodiverse wilderness area, home to over two dozen indigenous
tribes, and threatened by industrialization, and oil and natural gas
development. As part of the campaign, Rock the Earth caused
nearly 1,200 letters to be delivered to Chevron, a partner in the
proposed development, requesting that the American company
use their influence to either cause the development to be relocated
to another, already-industrialized region, or withdraw from the
partnership.
October 2011 In response to a recent report by some of the world’s
foremost scientists regarding the current state of our oceans, Rock
the Earth along with partners Friends of the Earth and Reverb,
submitted letters to nearly 300 musical artists, managers and

promoters of music cruises, asking that they take a stand to
clean up the cruise ship industry. This collaborative effort
was designed not only to educate artists as to the deleterious
impact of cruise ships on water quality and aquatic life,
coastal communities, and global climate change, but also to
offer assistance and real, cost-effective solutions to reduce the
impacts from a cruise.
October 2011 In collaboration with the Yonder Mountain
String Band’s Harvest Festival and Pipeline Publicity, and
in partnership with Turner Bend, Work Exchange Team, two
dozen Rock the Earth volunteers participated in a highway
cleanup on several miles of Arkansas Highway 23.

November 2011 Rock the Earth celebrated America
Recycles Day with the Best Buy Theater at Times Square,
in New York City, by holding a cell phone collection campaign.
In addition to the formal legal and educational activities that
Rock the Earth conducted in 2011, our legal and technical staff
members reviewed or monitored the following issues:
Rock the Earth and its plaintiff partners continued litigation
against the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and
intervening oil and gas companies holding new leases that
would allow for expanded drilling on Colorado’s Roan
Plateau. Federal District Court Judge Marcia Krieger
recently ordered an additional oral argument in May 2012,
after which a decision is expected in late 2012.
At the suggestion of Railroad Earth’s Tim Carbone, Rock
the Earth continued to monitor a proposed plan to construct
new, 200-foot power towers right through the heart of three
nationally significant areas: the New Jersey Highlands,
the Delaware River Gap National Recreation Area, and the
Appalachian National Scenic Trail.
Continued to monitor the Scoping process for the National
Park Service’s Wild & Scenic designation for the Tuolumne
River in Northern California, an issue suggested to us by
Hot Buttered Rum.
At the suggestion of Jackson Browne, continued our
support of the Plastic Pollution Coalition with a joint
advocacy campaign to educate and advocate for the
reduction of use of single-use, disposable plastic products.
Continued to educate and advocate for the reversal of the
Bush Administration rule authorizing stream encroachments
in mining operations, which facilitates the destructive
practice known as mountaintop mining.
Continued to monitor attempts by the U.S. Army to expand
Fort Carson and the Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site near
Colorado Springs, CO, without an adequate environmental
review.
Continued to monitor EPA’s move to study the natural
gas drilling process known as hydraulic fracturing,
in anticipation of future regulatory requirements, and
encouraged Rock the Earth constituents to ask EPA
to regulate the process long-suspected of causing
environmental damage and water pollution.
Researched Lake Champlain water issues.
In reviewing our actions from 2011, Rock the Earth continues
to demonstrate that it is the pre-eminent environmental
advocacy organization to work with the music
community – all without a single paid environmental
professional on staff. Not only do we effectively continue to
prosecute important cases in federal court, but our track record
of being an effective force grows as the projects that we have
publicly opposed (and educated thousands of concert goers to
also take action and oppose) are withdrawn. As we look to
2012, we anticipate additional legal victories, environmental
achievements, and new legal actions brought on behalf of the
music community.
In addition, we will continue to investigate several of the
issues listed above, as well as continue to solicit new issues
from the music community. As we begin campaigns on various
issues, we will seek to elevate their importance to the public,
by reaching out to members of the music industry to assist us
in publicity and fundraising efforts.

Membership & Outreach Accomplishments
Throughout 2011, Rock the Earth organized and trained
dedicated teams of volunteers to educate and interact with
music fans at over 125 concerts and festivals across the
United States, representing a slight increase over 2010 in our
core educational and outreach activities. Our decision to maintain
activities at a similar level to the previous year (and similar to
activities in 2008) was due to three primary factors: some much
needed organizational fiscal restraint; a year of transition in our
regional volunteer pools; and a reflection of the overall economic
condition in which organizations across the country experienced a
reduction in volunteers as people spent their free time looking for
employment or working harder to hold onto their jobs.
As a result of slightly more activities, overall membership for the year
experienced similar slight gains over 2010. Despite these efforts,
overall economic conditions still resulted in membership dollars gained
remaining at 2010 levels, fewer “active members” (donors within the
last 18 months), and a slightly lower renewal rate. The good news
is that Rock the Earth still managed to reach nearly a million concert
attendees, educated tens of thousands of people about critical
environmental issues, and attracted new members to the cause.
In the end, our seventh year of Rock the Earth’s Internship Program proved
once again that it is vital to the success of the organization. With a total
of five Education and Outreach interns, all working under the guidance
and direction of our Internship Tour Coordinator, Rock the Earth was able
to participate in more events around the country than otherwise would
have been possible using only regional teams.
Overall, our year of operations was full of
exciting new opportunities, accomplishments
and connections, including the following notable
achievements:
Worked 120 events in 30 states, totaling 137 concert dates;
Completed our eighth Education and Outreach Summer Tour over
a period of 18 weeks, working 82 events (97 concert dates) over
four months, during which time we raised nearly $23,000, gained
nearly 580 new members, and added 2,300 new contacts to our
mailing list;
Partnered directly with the following bands and tours (among
others) throughout the year:
– Journey, Foreigner, and Night Ranger (29 shows)
– My Morning Jacket (10 shows)
– Umphrey’s McGee (6 shows)
– John Butler Trio (8 shows)
– Ray LaMontagne (6 shows)
– Warped Tour (4 shows)
Presented eco-oriented musician panels, cell phone recycling,
and other scheduled programs at high-profile music festivals
including Bonnaroo, Summer Camp, DelFest, High Sierra
Music Festival, Mountain Jam, and All Good Music
Festival.
Partnered directly with multiple venues and promoter partners,
which enabled Rock the Earth to reach new audiences and build
a strong presence in the regional music communities:
– Best Buy Theater at Times Square (New York, NY)
– Bluebird Theater (Denver, CO)
Gained the support of over 750 new members
and increased our constituent base to over
36,000 people;
Of the members whose memberships lapsed in
2010, 14% renewed their memberships in 2011;
Through our Education and Outreach efforts,
we recruited over 2,600 potential volunteers,
from which we organized and trained over 100
volunteers nationwide;
Raised over $64,000 in RtE memberships to
support our project work and outreach programs;
Volunteers donated over 10,000 hours of time to
help further RtE’s mission;

In addition to returning to the road with long-time music partners
like Ray LaMontagne, John Butler Trio, and Umphrey’s McGee,
we were excited to receive invitations to be an environmental
partner on the national tour by Journey, Foreigner and Night
Ranger as well as by My Morning Jacket, further diversifying
the scope of music fans that we were able to reach in 2011.
Educating music fans from a diversity of locations, demographics
and age groups is important to us, so we try to partner with
musicians and bands from different genres. We are happy to
report we have gained respect and support from over 500 artists
in the eight years RtE has been defending the planet.
Despite these notable efforts, Rock the Earth, for the third year in
2011annual report
a row, faced the very real challenge of a global recession directly
impacting individual charitable donations. Despite these conditions,
we’re happy to report that due to a slight increase in our overall
outreach efforts, there was a similar increase of new members (up
14% over 2010). Meanwhile, perhaps also a sign of the economic
times, our past supporters dug deep, renewing memberships at a
rate slightly higher than in 2010 (up 1% over 2010).
Unfortunately, as we saw in 2010 and despite the gains in new
members and our renewals remaining steady, for a second year
in a row our active membership stayed below the 1,800 member
threshold – a threshold we first crossed in 2007. Given the
difficulty of the economic climate and the financial conditions
that constrained organizational operations, we’re grateful to
still have maintained a core of dedicated members as well as
attracting more along the way. As the economy continues to
show signs of recovery, we are confident that the organization is
positioned to regain momentum as we move into our ninth year
of educating and inspiring music fans across the country to join
with RtE in protecting our natural resources.

Fundraising Accomplishments
Grants
Like 2010, the 2011 economic climate made it a very challenging year for
securing grants. Many foundations and corporations recorded losses as the
stock market, real estate market and the recession negatively impacted their
ability to donate to worthwhile causes. RtE’s Development Committee submitted
over a dozen grant proposals and letters of interest for general organizational
support as well as project-related funding. Awarded grants help RtE advance its
current and future environmental and education and outreach agendas, and also
result in increased recognition within the environmental and grant communities.
January – December 2011 RtE submitted grant proposals to the
following foundations, organizations and corporations to fund program
activities, offset operational expenses, and provide for professional
development and capacity building, as well as provide for an alternative
fuel vehicle to support our annual Education and Outreach Tour: Laura
Jane Musser Fund, Furthur Foundation, Malone Family Land Preservation
Foundation, Toyota, Fund for Wild Nature, One Percent Foundation,
Levinson Foundation, Organic Valley, Dr. Pepper/Snapple, Hewlett
Foundation, Ittleson Foundation, V. Kann Rassmussen Foundation,
Patagonia, F. Allen & Louise K. Turner Foundation, Cliff Bar Family
Foundation, and the Padi Foundation.
March 2011 RtE received a $600 matching grant from the Clorox
Company Foundation.
September 2011 RtE received a $2,200 grant from the East Tennessee
Foundation. RtE was one of five charities benefiting from the annual

November 2011 RtE received a $5,000 grant from the Patagonia

December 2011 RtE received the following grants:
– $1,800 from the Gould Family Foundation.
– $4,324 from the Waterwheel Foundation. This amount is based on
donations made during the Phish show on September 3rd in Commerce
City, Colorado.
– $300 from the Anneta Argyres & James Levenson Family Fund.
RtE has contracted with a professional grant-writer / consultant to develop
an ambitious grant-writing agenda for the coming year, and is optimistic for
increased success in awarded grants in 2012.

White Horses Touring, Inc., resulting from the sale of cobranded
t-shirts by the San Francisco, CA band, ALO.
As a result of our year-long cellular telephone recycling
campaign, Pace Butler donated over $2,400.
eMusic donated over $2,600 in support of RtE’s Education and
Outreach efforts.
Nugs.net, Patagonia Music Collective, and Wear Your Music
made donations to Rock the Earth throughout the year for music
downloads and guitar string bracelets, which raised nearly $250.
March - August 2011 Ticket donations and/or VIP ticket
packages from Bonnaroo, FloydFest, Summer Camp,
Wakarusa, Harvest Festival, Cornmeal, and Life is Good
Festival raised nearly $7,500.
April 2011 A Mimi Fishman Foundation on-line auction of VIP
tickets donated by FloydFest, Summer Camp, High Sierra
Music Festival, Del Fest, Wakarusa, Mountain Jam,
Electric Forest, All Good Festival, Gathering of the Vibes
and Bonnaroo, as well as a signed Shaun White skateboard
deck donated by LiveNation raised over $7,100.
April 2011 In support of our Rock the Earth Day 2011 activities,
an on-line auction of items donated by New York City businesses
and the music industry was held raising $1,740. In addition,
fundraising events were held in partnership with Herbs &
Arts in Denver (CO), Soulshine Photography in Chicago
(IL), Morphedelic Design Clothing in Hood River (OR),
Mountains of the Moon Eco-Conscious Fashions & Art in
Chicago (IL), and a benefit concert was held at the Center for
Divine Awakening in Phoenix (AZ), raising nearly $1,100.
November 2011 Donated by Gibson Guitars and signed by
legendary guitarist Warren Haynes, Charity Folks held an
on-line auction of a signed Les Paul Studio Guitar to benefit RtE,
raising over $1,950.

In early December, Tyler Grant’s Grant Farm, the Garrett
Sayers Trio, and Chris Thompson & Coral Creek, held a
benefit concert for RtE at Cervantes’ Other Side in Denver, CO
raising $300.
During Railroad Earth’s New Year’s run, a private performance
was held at Denver’s Ogden Theater to benefit RtE. With food
donated by Whole Foods, beer donated by New Belgium
Brewing Company, wine donated by Dogwood Cellars, and
ticketing fees donated by Front Gate Ticketing, this intimate
performance and silent auction raised $8,000 for RtE.
RtE sincerely appreciates the generosity and consideration of
all those who donated items for auction, and acknowledges
the incredible importance of this invaluable support in helping
us advance the organization’s mission as we continue the work
towards achieving our goals.
May 2011 Canvas & Cocktails in Cherry Creek (Denver, CO),
held a painting fundraiser resulting in a donation of $670.
June 2011 RtE was one of five charities benefiting from the annual
silent auction at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in
Manchester, TN, resulting in a donation of over $2,200.
July 2011 All Good Festival “Grassroots Stage” programming
donation raised $1,000; Mountain Jam Festival donated $642.
September 2011 A house party fundraiser was held in Denver,
CO to benefit RtE, resulting in a $500 donation from Solar
Garlic, Ltd.

Financial Report
Rock the Earth continued to make progress in its eighth year as
a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organization. Nevertheless,
given the continued weak economy, 2011 was a challenging
year financially, and made even more challenging by the lack of a
single significant grant which had been the bedrock of our support
in 2009 and 2010. With the return of Founder and Executive
Director Marc Ross donating his time during the first quarter of
the year, Rock the Earth began 2011 with no debt along with a
conservative budget to fund anticipated program activities. By
addressing decreases in individual and corporate donations and
grants with reduced program goals and expenses, Rock the Earth’s
resiliency during tough economic conditions was proven.
Through the generosity of Rock the Earth’s base of existing and new
members, and an increase in special events, Rock the Earth ended
the year debt-free, demonstrated programmatic success, and is
poised to increase its focus on environmental protection, defending
some of America’s most threatened places. Moreover, to address
anticipated financial strains in 2012, Rock the Earth will be trying
a variety of new strategies to improve financial stability, including
increased fundraising activities and grant submissions, reduction of
staff hours, collaborating with other organizations, and facilitating
more volunteer involvement. Rock the Earth envisions an expansion
of its current fundraising drive involving recycling and reusing
cellular phones as well as the addition of a new program providing
fee-for-service education and outreach to other environmental
advocacy groups, relying on Rock the
Earth’s strength and record of success
in this area.
Despite the conclusion of the grant from the Educational
Foundation of America, which largely supported our Education
and Outreach efforts in 2009 and 2010, Rock the Earth managed
to conduct these activities at levels equal to 2010. With a focus
on education of the public regarding environmental issues about
which the music industry cares, we believe this will result in
both an increase in membership revenue and in interest by those
who would contribute financially toward the mission-focused
activities of the organization. Rock the Earth’s members will
continue to play a vital role in the organization’s growth and
vitality in 2012.
In 2011, Rock the Earth raised approximately $90,000 in total
revenue, a 28% decrease from the previous year. While this
total is a modest decrease in revenue from the previous year,
the organization also carried no significant debt in 2011, and
aggressively reduced its expenses accordingly. Further, the
significant reduction in grant dollars in 2011 has most certainly
impacted the organization’s bottom line. As a result, at year’s end,
the organization carried zero debt and booked a modest net income
for the year. Rock the Earth is hopeful that the organization’s
financial health will continue to improve through enhanced
relationships with musicians and the music industry, green and
sustainable businesses, corporate donors, grantors, and special
partnerships and events that creatively engage Rock the Earth
members, private donors, and the community in general.

industry, partnerships with the
Plastic Pollution Coalition and other
environmental issues will utilize
significant portions of Rock the
Earth’s resources in the upcoming
year. Rock the Earth’s commitment
to these and other issues has
enabled the organization to attract
a solid and growing membership
base. Although we note membership
contributions have been reduced, in
line with the state of the economy as
a whole.

approximately $20,000 in the bank (a
reduction of $5,000 over the previous
year’s end-of-year balance), and
payables of approximately $1,900 (a
decrease of approximately $1,300 from

eighth year as a nonprofit organization
reflects the continued hard work,
dedication and sacrifices made by the
organization’s volunteers, paid staff,
Board and Advisory Board members, and
its committed and generous membership
base, all of which continue to sustain
the organization on multiple levels.
