President’s Message
“I’ve stepped in the middle of seven sad forests, I’ve been out in front of a dozen dead oceans”
As 2008 ended, we in the environmental movement took a collective breath as we re-emerged from our bunkers and
from what seemed to be an eight-year assault on the environment by the Bush administration. By the same token, we in
Rock the Earth were able to take a long look back at the year that just transpired and realized that despite adversity and
challenges to both the environment and the economy, we achieved new heights, new accomplishments and new-found
credibility. We could never have anticipated the extent of the overwhelming success that Rock the Earth enjoyed in ’08.
By nearly every standard, the organization grew: members, money raised, profile, outreach efforts and events, diversity
of artist partners and audience reached, substantive projects advanced, and grant applications and grants awarded
– all expectations were exceeded. With only one full-time paid employee and two part-time employees, Rock the
Earth continues to grow thanks in large part to the efforts of the nearly three dozen Volunteer Staff and Advisory Board
members. Some of the highlights contained within this 2008 Annual Report are:
• With financial support from Patagonia and the George & Miriam Martin Foundation, Rock the Earth continued
to prosecute its first litigation matter – a lawsuit against the United States National Park Service for their
mismanagement of the stretch of the Colorado River that flows through Grand Canyon National Park. The case is
now before the 9 th Circuit Court of Appeals.
• In our first litigation victory, Rock the Earth successfully aided the Oglala Sioux Tribe in challenging the expansion of
a uranium mine in Nebraska, which has the potential to directly impact Tribal waters.
• Rock the Earth co-produced the largest Earth Day event in the history of the City of Denver – Green Apple Festival
Denver – in which over 20,000 people and nearly 100 nonprofit, green business and organic food vendors gathered for
a free Earth Day festival in Denver’s City Park, entertained by musical artists such as the Neville Brothers, Rose Hill
Drive, the Benevento/Russo Duo, Jackie Greene, and The Heyday.
• Rock the Earth, along with a coalition of conservation, sportsmen and wildlife groups, filed its second lawsuit in the
Federal District Court of Colorado to prevent the federal government from leasing Colorado’s Roan Plateau under
a drilling plan that will needlessly damage important wildlife habitat, traditional uses and cherished public lands.
• The music industry and more-high profile artists continued to embrace Rock the Earth in 2008, leading us to
collaborate with, among others, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Sheryl Crow & James Blunt, The Allman
Brothers Band, The Dave Matthews Band, Ratdog and Gov’t Mule.
• Rock the Earth’s volunteer legal and technical staff reviewed and/or worked on 17 separate, substantive issues and
projects brought to our attention by supporters in the music community.
• For the third year in a row, Rock the Earth played a major part in the environmental programming at the Bonnaroo
Music and Arts Festival – the largest festival in North America.
• As of year end 2008, Rock the Earth had 2325 members in 49 states, an increase of 12% over our 2007 membership.
Nearly 19,000 people are now on our mailing list.
• Over a third of our members and the people on our mailing list have volunteered to assist Rock the Earth in
some way – from tabling concerts and festivals, to providing legal and technical assistance, to grantwriting
and helping with publicity.
• Rock the Earth volunteers have donated more than 10,000 hours supporting our mission and activities.
• With significant funding from Incubus’ Make Yourself Foundation, Rock the Earth had a presence at 152 concert
dates throughout the United States in 2008, and had a full-time team that traversed the country for 18 weeks between
May and September.
• Over 100 unpaid volunteers worked these concert and festival events.
• In 2008, Rock the Earth raised over $148,000 from memberships, sponsorships, donations, grants and auctions – an 18%
increase over 2007!
• Rock the Earth accomplished all of the above (and more) with only a part-time paid Office Manager, a part-time
Development Director and a full-time paid Executive Director.

Rock the Earth continues to advance, progressing onward to becoming not only a fixture in the music community,
but also serving as a huge asset to the environmental community. In 2008, we partnered with more bands
and more environmental organizations than ever before, leveraging nearly 19,000 environmentally concerned
and music-loving constituents to bring about environmental awareness and change. With the growing spirit
of community in mind, some of our most significant work took place in partnership with other groups. Not
only did we take our first piece of litigation to the Federal Appeals Court level in partnership with two other
environmental groups, but we also managed to bring a second federal lawsuit and successfully defended the
rights of some of this country’s most economically disadvantaged Native peoples, all in partnership with other
like-minded groups.
The year wasn’t without our struggles with regard to funding. Although we witnessed an overall increase in
membership and income from membership dollars, due to the tightening of the U.S. economy, we also saw a
slight drop in the average donation to Rock the Earth as well as a lower rate of renewal, despite a rather active
membership renewal calling campaign. But whereas a year ago when the vast majority of our money came from
grassroots memberships, in 2008 nearly $75,000 (51%) came from businesses, special events and grants. In fact,
as the year came to a close, Rock the Earth was notified that it would be the recipient of its largest foundation
grant in the organization’s history – a two-year, $50,000 grant from the Educational Foundation of America. All
of this combined not only provided the organization with a more rounded and sustainable funding plan, but
positions Rock the Earth for increased success in these areas in 2009.
Rock the Earth continues to make inroads with an increasingly diverse number of artists, and once again, we
worked with some of the biggest names in Rock ‘n Roll, highlighted by our work with two legends in Rock:
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and Sheryl Crow. As noted above, our exposure at music festivals also reached
new heights.
As 2008 came to a close, and as we look towards 2009, the entire Volunteer Staff and Advisory Board are
incredibly excited and optimistic about the most significant change in our organization’s history -- the hiring
of Rock the Earth’s new Executive Director, Shawn Kilmurray. With Shawn’s 20+ years of experience in the
music industry and his having worked with numerous stellar musical acts – from U2 to Alicia Keys – we are
looking forward to rapid growth in 2009, new sources of funding and new partnerships that will help take
Rock the Earth to a new level.
Even with the potential for new growth in unchartered areas, rest assured that in 2009 Rock the Earth will
continue to expand our work to preserve America’s most threatened natural spaces, and will hold polluters
and governmental entities responsible for their actions. Rock the Earth will continue to educate and activate
thousands of environmentally concerned, music-loving fans, inspiring them to take action to create a
sustainable and healthy planet, and we’ll continue to look for opportunities to work with a greater variety of
artists. There is much work to be done to undo the last eight years of environmental rollbacks. Meanwhile,
with every passing year it becomes clearer that Rock the Earth steadily continues to grow closer to reaching
its goal of being the preeminent environmental advocacy organization working with and on behalf
of the music community.

Environmental Accomplishments
We are proud to report that in 2008
Rock the Earth’s environmental
advocacy and educational projects
continued to expand, impacting environmental
issues and the public in profound ways. We
continued to prosecute our first and initiated
our second lawsuit in federal court, initiated
a third legal action before the Nuclear
Regulatory Commission (NRC), and conducted
a public postcard campaign to have the
NRC investigated by Congress. The music
community continued to embrace Rock the
Earth by tapping us for the third time to conduct
environmental education at Bonnaroo,
the largest festival in the United States. All
the while, RtE’s experienced legal and technical
team continued to move ahead on several
new issues, while continuing to research and
investigate other issues brought to us by the
music community.
• January 2008 Rock the Earth legal and
technical staff submitted comments to the
National Park Service on the Final Regulations
for the long-term Winter Use Plan
for Yellowstone and Grand Teton National
Parks. At issue is the continued use
of snowmobiles in the Parks, which Rock
the Earth has opposed repeatedly since
2002. Rock the Earth, once again, opposed
the Plan on the basis that the continued use
of snowmobiles in the Parks (which was to
be phased out under the 2000 Plan) impairs
natural soundscapes, air quality, wildlife
and visitors’ experiences.
• January 2008 On January 11th, the
100th Anniversary of the dedication of
Grand Canyon National Park, Rock the Earth
and its plaintiff partners appealed a decision
by U.S. District Court in Arizona to the
Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals as part of
our on-going effort to protect and restore
the Grand Canyon’s natural sounds and
wilderness values from a steady increase
in motorized and commercial uses. The
plaintiffs, which include River Runners for
Wilderness, Rock the Earth, Living Rivers,
and Wilderness Watch, claim that the National
Park Service’s new management plan
for the Colorado River corridor, authorizing
continued motorboat use and helicopter
passenger exchanges in the heart of the
Grand Canyon, is inconsistent with National
Park Service obligations to preserve
the area’s wilderness character.
• January 2008 Rock the Earth filed comments
with the EPA to a preliminary report
concerning the discharge of pollutants
from cruise ships. The comment letter
urged the EPA to implement emergency
regulations banning the discharge of effluent
from cruise ships within protected areas
and within 12 miles of the coast of the U.S,
recommended that EPA require cruise ships
to use the best currently available technology
to treat its waste products before dumping
them into the ocean, and urged the Coast
Guard and the EPA to step up monitoring of
cruise ship waste streams and discharge
practices. The letter also recommended the
creation of a system of independent observers
to monitor cruise ship performance and
compliance with environmental regulations.
• February 2008 Rock the Earth joined with
the Center for Water Advocacy to file an
Amicus (“friend of the court”) Brief before
the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in support
of intervention in a suit brought by the
Ogalala Sioux Tribe. The parties opposed
the expansion of the Crow Butte Uranium
Mine in Nebraska based on violations
of federal law, policies and treaties.
• April 2008 A three-judge panel of the
Nuclear Regulatory Commission agreed
with Rock the Earth and ruled in favor of
allowing intervention by members of the
Oglala Tribe in a challenge to the proposed
Crow Butte Uranium Mine expansion.
Rock the Earth and the Center for Water
Advocacy previously filed an amicus (‘friend
of the court’) brief in support of the Tribe’s
right to intervene.
• May 2008 Rock the Earth and its plaintiff
partners filed an opening brief in the 9th
Circuit Court of Appeals in our lawsuit over
the Colorado River Management Plan
against the National Park Service. Meanwhile,
several other groups and individuals
have signed onto an amicus (“friend of the
court”) brief in support of our position: Sierra
Club, Californians for Western Wilderness,
Center for Biological Diversity, Friends
of the Earth, Friends of Yosemite Valley,
Grand Canyon Hikers and Backpackers Association,
Mariposans for the Environment
and Responsible Government, North West
Rafters Association, Southern Utah Wilderness
Association, Western Lands Project,
Great Old Broads for Wilderness, Olympic
Park Association, and RtE Advisory Board
Member Dr. Roderick Nash.
• June 2008 At the Bonnaroo Music &
Arts Festival, the largest music festival in
the United States, Rock the Earth hosted daily
environmental panels and interviews on the
Solar Stage featuring Marc Brownstein
(Disco Biscuits), Zach Gill (Jack Johnson,
ALO), Ulises Bella (Ozomatli),Tania Elizabeth
(The Duhks), Benj Gershman (OAR),
Pat Green, Cornmeal, The Duhks, Jennifer
Fahy (Farm Aid), Bob Ferguson (Oxfam),
Jason Bau (Hard Head Management),
Rebecca Lichtenfeld (WITNESS), Gregor
Barnum (7th Generation), Brandan Lane
(Headcount), Nick Morgan (Rex Foundation,
Black Rock Arts Foundation), Laura
Sohn (AC Entertainment), Joe Tomlinson
(ReVolve), Justin Levi (Conscious Alliance),
Beth Wise (Susan G Komen for the Cure),

• July 2008 Rock the Earth, along with a
coalition of conservation, sportsmen and
wildlife groups, filed a lawsuit in the
Federal District Court of Colorado to
prevent the federal government from leasing
Colorado’s Roan Plateau under a drilling
plan that will needlessly damage important
wildlife habitat, traditional uses and cherished
public lands. The lawsuit also states
that the Bureau of Land Management (BLM)
violated federal law by failing to analyze
foreseeable impacts to air quality and wildlife
populations, and by failing to analyze
the cumulative impact of adding more than
1,500 new wells in the Roan planning area
to the thousands of wells already surrounding
the plateau’s unspoiled public lands.
• July 2008 Rock the Earth legal and technical
staff submitted a comment letter to
the Fort Carson Directorate of Environmental
Compliance and Management regarding
the Scoping Plan for the forthcoming
Draft Environmental Impact Statement
(DEIS) concerning the proposed Pinon

Canyon Maneuver Site (PCMS) Expansion. In
the comments, Rock the Earth argued, among other
things, that the Scoping Plan for the DEIS failed
to adequately address the environmental impacts
of the proposed project. The PCMS lands include
undisturbed, pristine natural areas with important
ecological, archaeological and historical features.
• August 2008 Rock the Earth legal and technical
staff filed formal comments with the U.S.
EPA concerning proposed Draft National Pollutant
Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) General
Permit conditions for discharges from cruise
ships. Concluding that the proposed permit conditions
were not stringent enough, Rock the Earth
staff recommended several substantive changes,
including that specific permit limits be set for
such discharges as opposed to the suggested
imposition of “Best Management Practices.”
• September 2008 Rock the Earth encouraged the
public to comment on the proposed management plan
for the newly established Papahânaumokuâkea
Marine National Monument, concluding that the
plan was deficient based on: a failure to evaluate
the cumulative impacts of past, present and future
activities in the Monument; a failure to mitigate
military activities that might take place in and around
the Monument; a failure to strictly limit tourism in the
Monument; and a failure to integrate Native Hawaiian
cultural knowledge of indigenous traditions and
ecosystem management into the larger management
scheme. Rock the Earth began work on this project in
2005 at the suggestion of Jack Johnson.
• October 2008 Rock the Earth and its plaintiff partners
filed its final briefs in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals
in our lawsuit over the Colorado River Management
Plan against the National Park Service.
• October 2008 Rock the Earth and its plaintiff partners,
as well as the Bureau of Land Management
(BLM) and intervening oil and gas companies holding
the new leases that would allow for expanded drilling
on Colorado’s Roan Plateau, agreed to a ban on
surface disturbance on the Roan Plateau until
June 2009. This ensures that the concerns expressed
in RtE’s litigation will be heard and carefully considered
before any new development is contemplated.
• November 2008 Rock the Earth formally protested
proposed final regulatory changes by the U.S.
Department of Interior’s Office of Surface Mining
Reclamation and Enforcement that would support
and facilitate destructive mountain top mining by
allowing mining activities to impact areas within 100
feet of a stream, – a change in the law that is contrary
to both the letter and intent of both the federal Surface
Mining Act and Clean Water Act.
• December 2008 Rock the Earth legal and technical
staff submitted comments to the National Park

Service on the new, Proposed Regulations based
on the 2008 Environmental Assessment for the
Winter Use Plan for Yellowstone and Grand
Teton National Parks. The new, Proposed Regulations
were developed as a result of a Sept. 2008
District Court decision, striking down the 2007 Final
Winter Use Rule, which Rock the Earth opposed in
January 2008. Rock the Earth opposed the new,
Proposed Regulations for the same reasons it has
opposed the previously promulgated Winter Use
Regulations since 2002, namely for allowing for continued
snowmobile use in the Parks.
In addition to the formal legal and educational activities
that Rock the Earth conducted in 2008, our legal and
technical staff members reviewed or monitored the following
issues:
• The construction of the Sevier Power Company’s
coal-fired electric generation facility in southern
Utah, an issue suggested to us by the San Francisco
band, ALO (Animal Liberation Orchestra).
• Identification of large emitters of pollution in the
San Joaquin Valley in California, an issue also suggested
to us by ALO.
• Continued monitoring of the Scoping process for the
National Park Service’s Wild & Scenic designation
for the Tuolumne River in Northern California, an
issue suggested to us by Hot Buttered Rum.
• The construction of power lines without adequate
environmental review in upstate New York, an issue
suggested to us by Al Schnier of moe.
• Proposed drilling for natural gas in the vicinity of
Woodstock/Bethel, New York, an issue suggested to
us by fans and concert attendees while we worked at
an Allman Brothers Band concert in Bethel, NY.
• The proposed construction of power lines through and in
the vicinity of Joshua Tree National Park, an issue suggested
to us by famed percussionist Wally Ingram.
• The proposed construction of power lines along the
Delaware River corridor without adequate environmental
review, an issue suggested to us by Railroad Earth.
• The permit process associated with the North Carolina
Pigeon River Paper Plant.
• A Jones Beach wastewater treatment plant allegedly
in noncompliance with permit limits and conditions,
an issue suggested to us by fans while we worked a
Sheryl Crow concert in Jones Beach, NY.
In addition, we will continue to investigate several of
the issues listed above as well as continue to solicit
new issues from the music community. As we begin
campaigns on various issues, we will seek to elevate
their importance to the public by reaching out to members
of the music industry to assist us in publicity and
fundraising efforts.

Membership & Outreach Accomplishments
During the course of 2008, Rock the Earth had a
dedicated team of volunteers educating music
fans across the United States at over 125
concerts and festivals. The fifth year of our Internship
Program proved once again that it is vital to the success
of the organization. Utilizing nearly 100 volunteers, RtE
participated in more events around the country than otherwise
would have been possible.
Our fifth year of operation was full of exciting opportunities,
accomplishments and new connections. In 2008,
Rock the Earth...
• Gained the support of 2325 members and increased
our constituent base to nearly 19,000 people.
• Renewed 250 of our members, with an annual renewal
rate of 19%.
• Recruited almost 1,800 potential volunteers, from which
we organized and trained 120 volunteers nationwide.
• Raised over $79,000 in RtE memberships to support
our project work and outreach.
• Volunteers donated over 10,000 hours of time to
further RtE’s mission.
• Worked 126 events in 25 states, totaling 152 concert
dates.
• Participated in high-profile music festivals such as
Bonnaroo, 10,000 Lakes Festival, Outside Lands,
Gathering of the Vibes, High Sierra, Mile High
Music Festival, Del Fest, and Mountain Jam.
• Coordinated the Green Apple Music Festival in
Denver while participating as a featured non-profit at
their Chicago and San Francisco events.
• Partnered directly with two Colorado-based music
venues, the Denver-based Gothic Theatre and
Boulder-based Fox Theatre, where we worked a
combined 15 events.
This was a year of reaching out to new artists and new
music communities. We were excited to be invited to
take part in tours by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and
Sheryl Crow, since those tours attract a more seasoned
and culturally conventional demographic of music fans
than we have reached in the past. In addition, we established
the first of a growing number of regional partnerships
with music promoters and venues, which allowed
us the opportunity to educate fans in wide variety of
music genres that we might not otherwise have reached.
We plan to pursue additional partnerships during 2009
and the years ahead.
• Completed our fifth Education and
Outreach Summer Tour over 18 weeks,
working 97 events (119 concert dates)
over four months, during which time
we raised almost $48,000, gained
1,112 new members and added 3,809
new contacts to our mailing list.
• Partnered with the following bands

Educating music fans from a diversity of locations,
demographics and age groups is important to us, so we try to partner with
musicians and bands from different genres. We are happy to say we have
partnered with and gained the respect and support from over 75 artists
in the five years RtE has been defending the planet.
In addition to working more events in 2008 than in any of our previous four
years, we were able to sign up more new members and more renewing
members than ever before. Part of our success in this area has to do with
an increased emphasis on Education and Outreach training, which has empowered
new volunteers to immediately contribute to our efforts beginning
at their first event. Over the past five years, our membership numbers have
continued to increase steadily, including a doubling in our total membership
over the course of the past year. We expect this positive trend to continue
as we move into our sixth year of educating and inspiring music fans across
the country to join with RtE in protecting natural resources.

Fundraising Accomplishments
Grant-Related
In 2008, RtE celebrated unprecedented success from its grantwriting
efforts. RtE’s Development Committee submitted over a dozen
grant proposals and letters of interest for general organizational
support as well as project-related funding. Each grant proposal
helps RtE advance its future environmental and education and outreach
agendas, and also leads to increased recognition within the
environmental and grant communities.
• January – December 2008 RtE submitted over a dozen
grant proposals to the following foundations, organizations
and corporations to fund program activities, offset operational
expenses, provide for professional development and capacity
building, as well as making a formal request for an alternative
fuel vehicle to support our annual Education and Outreach Tour:
the Educational Foundation of America, Fund for Wild Nature,
George & Miriam Martin Foundation, Southwest Airlines, New
Belgium Brewing Company, Patagonia, Redwood Wines, Surdna
Foundation, Richard & Rhoda Goldman Fund, F. Allen & Louise K.
Turner Foundation, and Ad2 Public Service Fund.
• January 2008 RtE received a $10,000 grant from Incubus’
Make Yourself Foundation in support of our 2008 Summer
Education and Outreach Tour.
• February 2008 RtE received a grant of ten round-trip airline
tickets from Southwest Airlines in support of our 2008 Summer
Education and Outreach Tour.
• February 2008 RtE’s Letter of Interest was accepted by the
Educational Foundation of America and was invited to submit
a full proposal for funding in support of our 2008 Summer
Education and Outreach Tour.
• April 2008 RtE received a $1,000 grant from the Prairie Dog
Coalition as part of Patagonia’s Voice Your Choice Boulder
store grand opening grant contest.
• July 2008 RtE entered into a sponsorship agreement with eMusic,
the largest distributor of on-line music in the world. In conjunction
with this sponsorship, eMusic donated $2,000 to RtE as well as
donating 18,000 music download cards, which were subsequently
given out for free to interested music fans at concerts and festivals
throughout RtE’s annual Summer Education and Outreach Campaign.
• August 2008 RtE received a $2,500 grant from New Belgium
Brewing Company.
• September 2008 RtE received a grant of $5,000 from Patagonia
in support of our lawsuit against the National Park Service
for protection of the stretch of the Colorado River that runs
through Grand Canyon National Park.

• November 2008 RtE was notified that it would be receiving a $50,000 grant
(two years at $25,000 each year) from the Educational Foundation of America
in support of our 2009 and 2010 Education and Outreach Tours.
• December 2008 RtE received a $5,000 grant from the George & Miriam Martin
Foundation in support of our lawsuit against the National Park Service for protection
of the stretch of the Colorado River that runs through Grand Canyon National Park.
• December 2008 RtE received a $5,000 grant from the Compton Foundation in
support of our work with Michael Franti & Spearhead.
The Fundraising Committee has an ambitious grant writing agenda for the coming year and is optimistic for
continued success in 2009.
Fundraising Events
• January-December 2008 On-line auctions conducted through Ebay’s Mission Fish raised
over $6,300.
• March 2008 A Mimi Fishman Foundation on-line auction of VIP tickets donated by Bonnaroo
and 10,000 Lakes Festival raised in excess of $1,300 for RtE.
• March-August 2008 Ticket donations from Mountain Jam, 10,000 Lakes Festival, All Good
Festival and Gathering of the Vibes raised nearly $2,000 for RtE.
• April 2008 In support of our Rock the Earth Day 2008 activities, fundraisers were held by
Umphrey’s McGee, Dubconscious, New Monsoon & Dumpstaphunk, Denver’s Sunflower
Markets and Herbs and Arts and Boulder’s Fox Theatre, raising $3,000 for RtE!
• April 2008 RtE co-produced the largest Earth Day event in the history of the City of
Denver – Green Apple Festival Denver – in which over 20,000 people and nearly 100

in Denver’s City Park, entertained by musical artists such as the Neville Brothers, Rose
Hill Drive, the Benevento/Russo Duo, Jackie Greene, and The Heyday. RtE was
charged with vendor, local sponsor, speaker and volunteer coordination, and as a result,
raised nearly $6,500.
• May-August 2008 Jack Johnson’s Johnson Ohana Foundation donated concert
tickets and grant monies in conjunction with his August 2008 Red Rocks performance
to RtE, resulting in a donation in excess of $7,500.
• June 2008 RtE was one of five charities benefiting from the annual silent auction
at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Manchester, Tennessee, resulting in
a donation of $9,000!
• July 2008 Denver, Colorado’s Limited Addiction Gallery donated the proceeds from an on-line
auction of a limited edition print by artist Josh Keyes to RtE. The auction raised over $2,200.
• December 2008 A Mimi Fishman Foundation on-line auction raised in excess of $1,500 for RtE.
RtE greatly appreciates the generosity of everyone who donated items for auction, and acknowledges
the importance of these donations in helping RtE achieve its goals and pursue its mission.

Financial Report
Rock the Earth (RtE) continued to make progress in its fifth year as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit
organization. As a result of the generosity of RtE’s increasing base of existing and new
members, grantors, musicians and corporate contributors, RtE ended the year in a position
poised to increase its focus on environmental litigation and the defending of important environmental
issues, as well as embarking on a significant capacity building campaign. Mountain Top Mining,
Colorado River litigation and other environmental issue pursuits will engage significant portions
of RtE’s resources in the upcoming year. RtE’s commitment to these and other issues has enabled
the organization to attract a solid and growing membership base, reflected in both an increase in
membership revenue, and in those who are interested in contributing toward the mission-focused
activities in which the organization engages. RtE’s members will continue to play a vital role in the
organization’s growth and vitality in upcoming years.
RtE will continue its capacity building goal and outreach in the upcoming year by employing a new Executive
Director to move the organization closer to its financial and fundraising goals, necessary to increase
the program and education services that RtE provides. The addition of the new director will utilize a fair
portion of the organization’s resources in the near future.
In 2008, RtE raised approximately $152,000 in total income, a 22% increase over the previous year,
primarily through increases in membership dues and grants. This is a significant increase in revenue
from the previous year, and will enable the organization to focus its efforts on core mission activities.
RtE continues to improve its fundraising efforts through enhanced relationships with musicians and the
music industry, green and sustainable businesses, and corporate donors, grantors, and special partnerships
and events that creatively engage RtE members, private donors, and the community in general.
The addition of the new Executive Director will also be extremely beneficial in obtaining new funding
in the coming year.
The majority of Rock the Earth’s expenses
are related to Education and Program
Services, with a focus on education of the
public and RtE’s members regarding various
environmental issues that the music industry
and RtE feel strongly about. In addition,
the organization incurred expenses related
to the litigation of environmental issues,
most specifically the Colorado River Management
Plan.
Rock the Earth ended 2008 with approximately
$33,000 in the bank, an increase
of 7% from the previous year, and no outstanding
debts.
