President’s Message
“Like a steam locomotive rolling down the tracks....”
In a year in which the majority of environmental organizations faced challenges from all sides, Rock the Earth rose
up to meet those challenges and shine. It was our first full year as a tax-exempt, non-profit organization, and what a
year it was! 2005 was a non-stop year of enormous growth for our infant organization, and I’m proud to say that we
exceeded all expectations. This phenomenal growth was largely due to the hard work, perseverance and generosity
of our all-volunteer Board and Staff. Consider the following achievements from 2005:
• Rock the Earth now has over 750 members in 42 states, more than doubling our 2004 membership.
Over 6,000 people are now on our mailing list.
• Nearly 43% of our members and people on our mailing list have volunteered to assist Rock the Earth in some
way – from helping us out by tabling concerts and festivals, to providing legal or technical assistance, to grant
writing
• Rock the Earth volunteers logged more than 7,000 hours.
• Rock the Earth had a presence at over 136 concert dates throughout the United States and Canada in
2005, and had a full-time team that traversed the country for 17 weeks between May and September.
• Over 100 unpaid volunteers worked these concert and festival events in 2005.
• In 2005, Rock the Earth raised over $70,000 from memberships, sponsorships, donations, grants and auctions.
• 2005 marked a turning point in which the music industry began to embrace Rock the Earth financially. Jack
Johnson, The String Cheese Incident and Michael Franti all donated proceeds from
concerts to Rock the Earth, and the Rex Foundation (the philanthropic arm of the Grateful Dead)
provided us with an unsolicited grant as well.
• In 2005, Rock the Earth’s volunteer legal and technical Staff reviewed and/or worked on over 14 separate,
substantive issues and projects brought to our attention by folks in the music community (artists and fans).
• As 2005 came to a close, Rock the Earth formed a coalition of wilderness groups and prepared to engage in
its first litigation battle – a lawsuit against the National Park Service over the mismanagement of
the Colorado River as it flows through Grand Canyon National Park. The outcome of this matter will have a
significant and far-reaching impact on how wilderness is treated in the United States.
• In March 2005, Rock the Earth moved into a dedicated office space in the Alliance Center, a downtown
Denver building owned by the Alliance for Sustainable Colorado. The Alliance Center provides a base of
operations for over 25 like-minded, non-profit organizations, facilitating collaboration on substantive issues and
reducing common costs.

• As 2005 drew to a close, Rock the Earth was able to hire its first paid employee, a part-time
office manager, to facilitate increased operations of the organization.
As you can see above and throughout this Annual Report, Rock the Earth has been excelling. We are no
longer an organization in the womb -- we have quickly become an organization that is moving towards greater
responsibility and accountability, on the cutting edge of both the music and environmental communities.

As our activities increase, we are faced with greater expenditures; Volunteer Staff time is stretched, and we
continue to face challenges posed by not having a full-time paid staff. In addition, the current political climate
in which laws, regulations and policies are being rewritten at a record pace, with little opportunity for public
comment, forces resource-challenged groups like ours to react quickly and carefully pick our battles. If 2005
is any indication of our potential trajectory of growth and ability to handle these challenges, Rock the Earth
is bound to succeed in 2006.
Another main challenge for Rock the Earth comes from the philanthropic world, where we persevere in our
struggle to successfully secure grants. While our applications for such monies have increased in both number
and quality, we continue to face obstacles brought on by a shrinking pool of money available from foundations,
and perhaps, also due in part to the unique and revolutionary nature of our “fresh” organization. There
are, however, positive signs from potential “green” corporate sponsors, who recognize that our new model
for an environmental advocacy organization with tie-ins to the music industry has built-in PR and marketing
advantages. We are confident that we will continue to successfully grow financially, albeit perhaps in less
traditional ways – which isn’t necessary a bad thing!
As 2005 comes to a close, all of us involved in Rock the Earth are tremendously excited and optimistic. We
continue to make inroads with new and varied artists of all genres. 2005 saw us working with two of the
biggest names in Rock ‘n Roll: Bonnie Raitt and Jack Johnson. Just as we continue to look for
opportunities to work with a variety of artists and to cultivate those relationships, we will continue to harness
that collaborative energy, pouring it back into quality and effective legal work to bring about the changes that
we all desire to see, in furtherance of a healthy and sustainable planet. We hope that you will continue to
support us as we continue on our path to become the preeminent environmental group to work with the
music community.

Environmental Accomplishments
• January 2005 Rock the Earth filed formal comments with the National Park Service to a draft an Environmental
Impact Statement (EIS) for the Colorado River Management Plan. The draft EIS evaluates several options
as to how the Colorado River will be managed as it flows through Grand Canyon National Park.
• March 2005 RtE opposed new regulations by the National Forest Service protesting the roll-back of logging
regulations on public lands, under the mis-named guise known as “Healthy Forests.” Among other reasons, RtE
formally objected to the new regulations on the grounds that critical decisions regarding our National Forest
will be withheld from public review and comment, and will result in adverse impacts to both our nationally-held
forests and the environment overall.
• April 2005 RtE again fought attempts by the EPA to exempt the application of pesticides to waterways from
Congressionally-mandated, Clean Water Act permitting requirements.
• April 2005 RtE filed formal comments to the Bureau of Land Management’s proposed plan and Draft
Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS); the BLM plan would allow drilling on Colorado’s Roan Plateau. In our
comments, RtE opposed the currently proposed plan on the grounds that the BLM failed to evaluate reasonable
alternatives, such as considering viable and applicable drilling technologies currently available that would allow
for the extraction of all natural gas beneath the Plateau, without needing to impact wilderness areas on top
of the Plateau. In the process, over twenty other environmental groups pointed to our expertise in this critical
area. In addition, RtE also joined in the broader comments submitted by a coalition of groups under the umbrella
organizational name, “Save Roan Plateau.”
• August 2005 Rock the Earth submitted scoping comments to the Bureau of Reclamation calling for an
expanded, comprehensive, coordinated and forward-looking study and action plan for water management in the
Colorado Basin. In its comments, Rock the Earth urged the Bureau to seriously consider the idea of decommissioning
Lake Powell in an Environmental Impact Statement, in order to restore natural flows to the Colorado and
allow, among other things, for the recovery of several threatened and endangered fish species.
• October 2005 Rock the Earth kicked off an on-line campaign
to petition the US Department of Agriculture to reinstate
the Roadless Area Conservation Rule, to protect nearly 60 million
acres of America’s last wild National Forests from logging, road
construction, mining, oil exploration, and other forms of development.
Over a period of three months, Rock the Earth collected
nearly 200 names to add to the petition.
• October-December 2005 Rock the Earth was fully engaged
in negotiations with River Runners for Wilderness, Living
Rivers and other environmental groups, to form an alliance to challenge
the National Park Service’s forthcoming Record of Decision
for the Colorado River Management Plan (due January 2006).

In addition to the formal comment letters that we submitted in 2005, our legal and
technical staff members reviewed or monitored the following issues:
• A proposed marine sanctuary off the northwest Hawaiian Islands, an issue for
which RtE received financial support from Jack Johnson;
• The declining water levels in the Great Lakes, an issue suggested to us by Steven
Page of the Barenaked Ladies;

• The construction of the Sevier Power Company’s coal-fired electric generation
facility in southern Utah, an issue suggested to us by the San Francisco band, ALO
(Animal Liberation Orchestra);
• Identification of large emitters of pollution in the San Joquin Valley in California,
an issue also suggested to us by ALO;
• The disposal of nuclear waste on Native American lands, an issue suggested to us
by Peter Rowan;
• Environmental Justice issues impacting the community of Hunter’s Point in the
San Francisco Bay, an issue suggested to us by the San Francisco bands, New
Monsoon and Aphrodesia;
• Various issues concerning development in the headwaters of, and wetlands tied
to, the St. Johns River in northern Florida, as well as large water diversions from
the river, issues suggested by Susan Trucks, mother to Derek Trucks and mother-inlaw
to Susan Tedeschi;
• Restoration of the Hetch Hetchy Valley, outside of Yosemite in Northern California,
an issue suggested to us by Hot Buttered Rum String Band;
• Wetland development issues in the Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania, an issue suggested
to us by Tim Carbone of Railroad Earth.
As we look to 2006, the transformation of Rock the Earth into a full-fledged environmental
advocacy group continues. The majority of our collective focus in early 2006
will be on our first litigation matter: challenging the National Park Service’s 2006 Colorado
River Management Plan – an issue that will have far-ranging implications as to
how all wilderness areas in the United States will be managed.
In addition, we will continue to investigate several of the issues listed above as well as
continue to solicit new issues from the music community. As we begin campaigns on
various issues, we will seek to elevate their importance to the public by reaching out to
members of the music industry to assist us in publicity and fundraising efforts.

Membership & Outreach Accomplishments
Rock the Earth volunteers worked thousands of hours at events around the country, as well as in their own home
offices, to make our second year of membership and outreach more successful than we could have imagined. Public
education and outreach about the projects on which we are working is our primary means of garnering support for
the environmental projects that are of critical significance today. Our presence at music events engages musicians
and the music community as a whole to become educated, active and involved in protecting our natural resources
across the country for the enjoyment of future generations. The inspiration of new activists and the presentation of
new opportunities at these events continue to drive our organization’s public outreach.
In 2005, RtE ...
• more than doubled our 2004 membership and email list, with a total of 720 members and over 7,000 people on
our email list
• completed our first membership renewal campaign, renewing 90 of our 2004 members and raising almost
$8,000
• gained almost 2,000 potential volunteers and organized 100 volunteers nationwide
• raised over $42,000 in RtE memberships to support our project work and outreach
• volunteers donated over 7,000 hours of time in furtherance of the Rock the Earth mission
• worked 101 events in 28 states and one Canadian province, totaling 136 concert dates
• completed our second Education and Outreach Summer Tour, working 82 events over four months, in which we
gained over $22,000, almost 500 new members and 3,000 new contacts on our mailing list while working with:
• Jack Johnson and ALO (Animal Liberation Orchestra) for 32 shows
• String Cheese Incident’s Big Summer Classic for 15 shows
• Gov’t Mule for 7 shows
• Ani D’Franco for 2 shows
• such high-profile festivals as Bonnaroo, High Sierra Music Festival, Summer Camp,
10,000 Lakes Music Festival, Magfest Midwest, All Good Music Festival, Gathering
of the Vibes, RockyGrass, Folks Festival and Harmony Festival
• finished the year joining Bonnie Raitt for six dates and Gov’t Mule/moe. for four dates on
their fall tours, and joining Yonder Mountain String Band for one evening of their annual
2-night New Year’s Eve run in Denver, CO

Rock the Earth’s Summer Tour 2005 was certainly the highlight of our year, almost quadrupling
our 2004 tour in dates and members. RtE Volunteer Staff and Road Crews, including three Summer
Outreach Interns, worked 96 dates nationwide, including 26 festivals, in only four months. Our
participation on various summer tours and at festivals nationwide, have exposed Rock the Earth to thousands
of music fans of all ages, locations and demographics. RtE was the only non-profit organization to join
Jack Johnson on his entire summer tour, which resulted in 145 new members and a $5,000 donation
from Jack Johnson himself!

In addition to the members gained at events and through membership renewals, 125 members joined by
making contributions through the mail, our website and through our RtE auctions, reinforcing the accolades
that we have received as a result of our activities within the music and environmental communities. At the
end of 2005, RtE had gained a grand total of 650 new members and renewed 70 members expanding our
membership into 42 states and two Canadian provinces. An additional 20 renewals from 2004 were received
in early 2006 for a total of 90 renewing members in 2004 and a 25% renewal rate. A fantastic success in
only our second year!

Fundraising Accomplishments
Grants
In addition to requests for organizational support, each grant proposal
helps Rock the Earth (RtE) become more focused on its future
environmental and education/outreach agendas, and also leads to
better recognition within the environmental community.
• January 2005 Rock the Earth (RtE) submitted a proposal
to the Acorn Foundation for general operating expenses and to
allow us to hire a part-time office manager.
• February 2005 RtE was chosen by the University of
Colorado’s Environmental Center as one of only two non-profit
beneficiaries of their annual Microbreweries for the Environment
fundraiser.
• March 2005 RtE submitted a proposal to Patagonia (national)
for funding in support of RtE’s legal and scientific efforts
to challenge the National Park Service’s mismanagement of the
Colorado River as it flows through Grand Canyon National Park.
• April 2005 RtE became certified by 1% For The Planet, an
alliance of businesses “committed to leveraging their resources
to create a healthier planet. Members recognize their responsibility
to and dependence on a healthy environment and donate
at least 1% of their annual net revenues to environmental organizations
worldwide.” This certification has already proven
important in RtE’s fundraising efforts and will continue to do so
in the future. For example, musician Jack Johnson’s preference
to work only with environmental organizations certified by 1%
For The Planet helped forge our successful relationship with him
in 2005.
• June 2005 RtE entered into a sponsorship agreement with
eMusic, the largest distributor of on-line music in the world. In
conjunction with this sponsorship, eMusic donated $2,000 to
RtE as well as donating 26,000 music download cards, which
were subsequently given out for free to interested music fans at
concerts and festivals throughout RtE’s Summer 2005 Outreach
and Education Campaign.
• July 2005 RtE submitted a Letter of Interest for funding in
support of our legal/technical and educational/outreach efforts
aimed at preservation and restoration of the Colorado River ecosystem
in the stretch of the river that runs through Grand Canyon
National Park.
• August 2005 RtE submitted a proposal to Patagonia (Denver)
for funding general operating expenses and to allow us to
hire a part-time office manager.
• November 2005 RtE received an unsolicited grant of
$5,000 from the Rex Foundation, a non-profit charitable organization
created and supported by members of the Grateful Dead
and their friends.
• November 2005 RtE submitted a proposal to Tom’s of
Maine for funding in support of RtE’s 2006 Summer Education
and Outreach Campaign. Rock the Earth’s 2006 Summer Field
Education and Outreach Campaign will commence approximately
May 25, 2006, and run continuously for 16 weeks through
September 29, 2006, at a cost of approximately $18,000.
• December 2005 RtE submitted a proposal to be a participant
in and beneficiary of the University of Colorado Environmental
Center’s annual Microbreweries for the Environment
benefit.
The Development Committee has an ambitious grant writing agenda
for the coming year and is optimistic for continued success in 2006.
In addition, as the year closed, the entire Volunteer Staff of RtE were
preparing for a massive fundraising effort, reaching out to over 200
“green” businesses to inquire into potential sponsorship and partnership
opportunities.
Fundraising Events
• March 2005 Denver Benefit Concert entitled the “Snow
Ball,” featuring Shanti Groove and Pete Wernick’s Live Five at
Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom. Along with the concert, Rock
the Earth also conducted a silent auction and raffle of goods donated
by various music industry vendors at South By Southwest.
Total raised (net after expenses) was in excess of $1,500.
• April 2005 The String Cheese Incident played two benefit
concerts at Suede in Park City, Utah. A portion of the proceeds
($5,000) of these two sold-out shows was donated to RtE.
• May 2005 A Mimi Fishman Foundation on-line auction
raised in excess of $1,000 for RtE.
• August 2005 Jack Johnson donated part of the proceeds
($5,000) from his concert at the Santa Barbara Bowl in Santa
Barbara, California to RtE.
• October 2005 In conjunction with Bioneers and in partnership
with the University of Colorado’s Environmental Center,
RtE held a benefit concert with Michael Franti, and a screening
of his movie, I Know I’m Not Alone. The sold-out event raised
over $1,000 for RtE.
• October 2005 In conjunction with the RtE Annual Staff
Meeting, RtE held a reception and silent auction at the Whiskey
Bar in Denver, Colorado. The event raised over $1,000 for RtE.

Financial Report
Rock the Earth made significant financial progress in its second
year as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organization. As a
result of the generosity of our increasing base of existing and
new members, donors, musicians and corporate contributors,
we ended the year in a very positive position with a focus on our
first major litigation matter against the National Park Service
over the mismanagement of the Colorado River. This litigation
will engage a significant portion of our resources in the upcoming
year. Our commitment to this and other issues has enabled
our organization to attract corporate donors and grantors who
understand and value the importance of our fight to save this
and other magnificent ecosystems.

Rock the Earth raised more than $73,000 in income in the current
year, primarily through membership dues, donations, grants and
special events. This is a significant increase in revenue from
the previous year, which will enable RtE to focus our efforts on
our core mission activities. Our organization has dramatically
improved our fundraising efforts in the current year, through enhanced
relationships with musicians and the music industry. We
have creatively engaged our membership to continue to increase
the revenue generated for our organization.
The majority of Rock the Earth’s expenses included Membership
and Outreach and Program Services, with a focus on education
of the public regarding the various environmental issues that the
music industry and our organization feel strongly are important.
Expenses as a percentage of Total Income decreased slightly
from the previous year.
The success that Rock the Earth continues to enjoy in its second
year as a nonprofit organization highlights the focus on protection
of the environment that many Americans continue to share
and are willing to become active in, both financially through their
generous contributions, and with the generous donations of time
and dedication of our many volunteer staff and board members.
Rock the Earth ended the year with approximately $31,500 in the
bank, a significant increase over our initial year operations. This
will allow us to continue our work on our mission-driven activities
of providing legal and technical assistance to communities
that are affected by environmental injustices.
