President’s Message
“Things should start to get interesting right about now”
When Rock the Earth finished 2005, we had just hired our first part-time, paid employee and were preparing to file
our first litigation case a full year ahead of schedule. 2006 picked up where 2005 left off and again, the organization
experienced tremendous growth and gained national credibility. Whether it was the number of projects on which we
worked, the number of volunteers engaged, the amount of money raised, the number of events worked, the grants
for which we applied, the tours on which we traveled or the profile of the artists with whom we collaborated – all
expectations were exceeded. As was the case in 2005, this mercurial growth continues to spring from the hard work,
perseverance and generosity of our nearly (but no longer entirely) volunteer Board and Staff. Some of the highlights
contained within this 2006 Annual Report are:
• Rock the Earth now has over 1650 members in all 50 states, more than doubling (for the third consecutive year)
our 2005 membership. Over 11,000 people are now on our mailing list.
• Nearly 62% of our members and the people on our mailing list have volunteered to assist Rock the Earth in some
way – from helping us out by tabling concerts and festivals, to providing legal or technical assistance, to grant
writing or helping us with publicity.
• Rock the Earth volunteers have logged more than 10,000 hours.
• Rock the Earth had a presence at 162 concert dates throughout the United States in 2006, and had a full-time
team that traversed the country for 18 weeks between May and September.
• Over 100 unpaid volunteers worked these concert and festival events in 2006.
• In 2006, Rock the Earth raised over $102,000 from memberships, sponsorships, donations, grants and auctions
– a 40% increase over 2005!
• With financial support from the Rex Foundation and the Fund for Wild Nature, in March of 2006, Rock the
Earth brought its first litigation matter – a lawsuit against the United States National Park Service for their
mismanagement of a stretch of Colorado River that flows through Grand Canyon National Park.
• Rock the Earth successfully “greened” its first festival – Jam Cruise. With the support of festival promoters,
Rock the Earth partnered with green businesses, artists and another nonprofit to reduce the environmental
impact of the festival, educate and activate attendees on environmental issues, and offset the carbon emissions
from the ship with trees planted in Jamaica and on the Yucatan peninsula.
• Rock the Earth’s volunteer legal and technical Staff reviewed and/or worked on 16 separate, substantive issues
and projects brought to our attention by folks in the music community.
• As 2006 came to a close, Rock the Earth, in collaboration with conservation groups in Hawaii, were preparing
to legally challenge eco-prospecting permits issued for the new National Marine Monument off the Northwest
Hawaiian Islands.
• 2006 marked a turning point in which the media began to take note of Rock the Earth. During the second half of
2006, Rock the Earth was featured in major national and international publications including USA Today, The
Christian Science Monitor, The Chronicle of Philanthropy and Q Magazine.

• The music industry and more-high profile artists continued to embrace Rock the Earth in 2006, leading us
collaborate with, among others, Bon Jovi, Bonnie Raitt, Allman Brothers Band, Dave Matthews
Band, and the Bonnaroo Music Festival.
• In 2006, Rock the Earth not only continued to maintain a paid, part-time Office Manager, but the organiza-
tion also began to pay its full-time Executive Director a small salary. As 2006 drew to a close, interviews
were being conducted to hire the organization’s first paid Development Director (part-time).
As you can see above and throughout this Annual Report, Rock the Earth continues to grow at an amazing
rate. Thanks to the help of over 100 volunteers and partnerships within the music, green business and
environmental communities, in just two and a half year’s time, we have transformed this fledgling non-profit
organization into a full-time environmental advocacy organization. Rock the Earth is not only now capable of
activating and motivating the music community to take action on particular issues near and dear to their (and
the artists they love) hearts, but the organization is positioned to firmly take legal steps to correct corporate
misfeasance and governmental malfeasance.
Although the organization still continues to struggle in obtaining funding through the traditional philanthropic
world in the form of grants, at the same time, Rock the Earth’s volunteer grantwriters were able to
submit an unprecedented number of proposals to various foundations and corporate entities for significant
funding (several of which remain outstanding as of the close of 2006). In the end, however, it was the continued
growth of grassroots support for the organization from the music community (primarily fans/members,
artists and festivals), that enabled the organization to grow and to reach new heights. With the addition of
a paid, part-time Development Director in 2007, it is our belief that we can maintain (or exceed) this pace
of growth by continuing to pursue non-traditional sources of funding via creative corporate partnerships and
special events.
As 2006 came to a close, all of us involved in Rock the Earth are tremendously excited and optimistic.
We continue to make inroads with new and varied artists of all genres of music. 2006 saw us working with
several of the biggest names in Rock ’n Roll, highlighted by the unsolicted invitation by Bon Jovi’s management
to be part of their stadium tour. Our exposure at music festivals similarly reached new heights, in which
we played a major part in programming the Solar Stage at Bonnaroo (the largest music festival in the country),
highlighted by a 45-minute one-one-one interview with Rock Legend Bonnie Raitt.
Just as we continue to look for opportunities to work with a variety of artists and to cultivate those relationships,
we will continue to harness that collaborative energy, putting it back into quality and effective legal
work to hold polluters responsible, the government accountable, and to create a more sustainable and healthy
planet for ourselves and future generations. In 2006, Rock the Earth made major steps towards our goal of
becoming the preeminent environmental group to work with the music community. We thank you for
your support and hope that you will continue to join with us in 2007.

Environmental Accomplishments
On a number of levels, 2006 marked a turning point in Rock the Earth’s environmental advocacy and educational
projects. Thanks to the support of the Rex Foundation (the philanthropic arm of the Grateful Dead), we were able
to file our first lawsuit--a year ahead of schedule. In addition, the music community embraced Rock the Earth by
inviting us to conduct environmental education at Bonnaroo, one of the largest festivals in the United States. We
also ran an environmental education/action program on Jam Cruise, which resulted in significant and measurable
environmental outcomes. All the while, our legal and technical team continued to move several new issues ahead,
while continuing to research and investigate other issues brought to us by the music community.
• January 2006: Rock the Earth implemented Greening Jam Cruise, an environmental education and action
program on Jam Cruise 4, to reduce the environmental impacts from a music festival on a cruise ship. Consider
the following accomplishments as a direct result of Rock the Earth’s “Greening Jam Cruise Program”:
- RtE planted 52,000 trees in Jamaica and on the Yucatan Peninsula to offset the emissions caused by Jam
Cruise 4;
- RtE diverted nearly 11 tons of glass, aluminum and steel to recycling facilities;
- RtE implemented a towel and linen reuse program;
- RtE contracted with multiple green sponsors to bring environmentally-friendly products on board, including
biodegradable/non-toxic soap, shampoo and lotion, organic coffee, creamer, milk, yerba mate and snack bars;
- RtE hosted a private, educational event on Social Change Through Music, moderated by RtE Executive Director
Marc Ross and featuring Victor Wooten and Roy “Futureman” Wooten (Flecktones), Michael Travis
(String Cheese Incident), Matt Butler (Everyone Orchestra), David Weismann (Musical Earth), Bo Carper
and Jeff Miller (New Monsoon);
- RtE counseled Jam Cruise on environmentally-friendly/organic merchandise as well as securing 100% recycled
content paper for all production needs and signage.
• March 2006: Rock the Earth filed suit against the National Park Service in Federal Court in the District of
Arizona regarding the Record of Decision for Colorado River Management Plan. Joining Rock the Earth in the
lawsuit were River Runners for Wilderness, Living Rivers and Wilderness Watch.
• June 2006: President George W. Bush proclaimed the Northwest Hawaiian Islands a National Marine
Monument under the Federal Antiquities Act, the most protective measures available under law. This Presidential
Proclamation came after nearly a year of Rock the Earth’s advocacy, education and activation of the music
community to protect this precious ecosystem; this work was partially funded by Jack Johnson.
• June 2006: At the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, the largest music festival in the United States, Rock the
Earth hosted daily environmental panels and interviews on the Solar Stage featuring John Medeski (MMW),
Marc Brownstein (Disco Biscuits), Justin Baker (Conscious Alliance), Liz Berlin
(Rusted Root), Aaron Redner and Zac Matthews (Hot Buttered Rum), Anna Borofsky
(Clean Vibes), Andy Bernstein (Headcount), Victor Wooten and Futureman (Bela Fleck
& the Flecktones), Brendan Bayliss (Umphrey’s McGee) and Grady O’Shaughnesey
(Clif Bar). The weekend was highlighted by a one-on-one interview on the Solar Stage
between RtE Executive Director Marc Ross and rock legend Bonnie Raitt.
• September 2006: At the suggestion of Hot Buttered Rum String Band, Rock the
Earth submitted scoping comments to the National Park Service regarding the Wild
& Scenic designation for the Tuolumne River in Northern California. In its comments,
Rock the Earth urged the Park Service to seriously consider the decommissioning of the
O’Shaughnessy Dam and restoring the Hetch Hetchy Valley.
• October 2006: Rock the Earth petitioned the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land
Management to revise its proposed management plan for Colorado’s Roan Plateau. The
proposed plan prioritizes oil and gas development above all other land uses, and permits
drilling in the environmentally sensitive areas on top of the plateau. In the petition, Rock
the Earth provided documentation proving that feasible drilling technologies are available
today that will allow for protection of all wilderness quality areas in the planning area,
while allowing for the same level of resource production proposed in the current plan.

• November 2006: Despite three years of formal protests by groups that included Rock the Earth, in
November the US Environmental Protection Agency issued a Final Rule allowing for the application of
pesticides to waterways, without needing a Clean Water Act permit. Rock the Earth commenced discussions
with other environmental organizations to form a coalition to challenge this rulemaking in court.
• December 2006: Rock the Earth legal and technical staff commenced review of a draft Environmental
Impact Statement by the Department of Defense to allow for the expansion of the Piñon Canyon Maneuver
Site (PCMS), a large-scale US Army training facility in Southeastern Colorado. The PCMS lands include
undisturbed, pristine natural areas with important ecological, archaeological and historical value. It is our
intent to file formal comments opposing the expansion in early 2007.
• December 2006: Rock the Earth legal and technical staff commenced review of a Draft Environmental
Impact Statement by the National Park Service’s new long-term Winter Use Plan for Yellowstone and
Grand Teton National Parks. At issue is the continued use of snowmobiles in the park units, which Rock
the Earth has opposed repeatedly since 2002. It is our intent to final formal comments to the DEIS when
the public comment period commences in the Spring of 2007.
In addition to the formal comment letters that we submitted in 2006, our legal and technical staff members
reviewed or monitored the following issues:
• Rock the Earth and the Hawaiian Conservation Alliance commenced review of permits issued by state
and federal authorities in the newly established National Marine Monument off the Northwest Hawaiian
Islands. Many of these permits allow for activities specifically banned by state and federal law
• Non-compliant discharges from publicly-owned sewage facilities along the Chattahoochee River in the
Atlanta metropolitan area, an issue suggested to us by fans of Jack Johnson during our 2005 Summer
Tour;
• The declining water levels in the Great Lakes, an issue suggested to us by Steven Page of the Barenaked
Ladies;
• The construction of the Sevier Power Company’s coal-fired electric generation facility in southern Utah, an
issue suggested to us by the San Francisco band, Animal Liberation Orchestra (ALO);
• Identification of large emitters of pollution in the San Joaquin Valley in California, an issue also suggested
to us by ALO;
• The disposal of nuclear waste on Native American lands, an issue suggested to us by Peter Rowan;
• Various issues concerning development in the headwaters of, and wetlands tied to, the St. Johns River
in northern Florida, as well as large water diversions from the river, issues suggested by Debbie Trucks,
mother of Derek Trucks and mother-in-law of Susan Tedeschi;
• Proposed statutory and regulatory changes to the National Environmental Policy Act.
As we look to 2007, it becomes clear that we are moving closer to our vision for Rock the Earth to become
the pre-eminent environmental advocacy organization to work with the music community. As we
continue to prosecute our first case against the National Park Service over the Colorado River Management
Plan, we are already looking towards potential litigation to challenge eco-prospectors in the NW Hawaiian
Islands, snowmobiles in Yellowstone & Grand Teton National Parks, communities applying pesticides to
waterways without permits required by the Clean Water Act, and inadequate studies for the expansion of the
Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site.
In addition, we will continue to investigate the issues listed above as well as continue to solicit new
issues from the music community. As we begin campaigns on various issues, we will seek to elevate their
importance to the public by reaching out to members of the music industry to assist us in publicity and
fundraising efforts.

Membership & Outreach Accomplishments
In 2006, Rock the Earth volunteers worked thousands of hours at events around the country, to make our third year of
membership and outreach more successful than we could have imagined. Public education and outreach about the
projects on which we are working is our primary means of garnering support for RtE’s environmental projects that are
of critical significance today. Our presence at music events engages musicians and the music community as a whole
to become educated, active and involved in protecting our natural resources across the country for the enjoyment of
future generations.
In 2006, RtE ...
• more than doubled our 2005 membership and email list, with a total of 1,668 members and over 8,400 people
on our email list
• renewed 165 of our members, raising over $14,000
• gained almost 4,300 potential volunteers and organized 100 volunteers nationwide
• raised over $55,000 in RtE memberships to support our project work and outreach
• volunteers donated over 10,000 hours of time in furtherance of the Rock the Earth’s mission
• worked 120 events in 26 states, totaling 162 concert dates
• completed an extensive Education and Outreach Summer Tour over 18 weeks, working 88 events over four months,
in which we gained over $28,000, almost 700 new members and almost 3,000 new contacts on our mailing list
while working with (amongst others):
- Bonnie Raitt for 15 shows;
- Dave Matthews Band for 22 shows;
- Allman Brothers Band for 6 shows;
- Bon Jovi for 4 shows;
- Bela Fleck’s Acoustic Planet Tour for 10 shows;

Rock the Earth’s Summer Education & Outreach Tour 2006 was yet again the highlight of our year, sur-
passing our 2005 tour in dates, exposure and members. RtE Volunteer Staff and Road Crews, including seven
Summer Outreach Interns, worked 120 dates nationwide, including 12 festivals, in only four months.
Our participation with various summer tours and at festivals nationwide, has exposed Rock the Earth to over
a million music fans of all ages, locations and demographics.
In addition to the members gained at events and through membership renewals, an additional 148 members
joined by making contributions through the mail, our website and through our RtE auctions, reinforcing the
support we have received as a result of our activities within the music and environmental communities. At
the end of 2006, RtE had gained a grand total of 907 new members and renewed 165 members, for a 25%
renewal rate. We are thrilled to have finally expanded our membership into all 50 states, as well as two
Canadian provinces. A fantastic achievement in only three years!

Fundraising Accomplishments
Grant-Related
In 2006, Rock the Earth (RtE) experienced increased success from its
grantwriting efforts. RtE’s Fundraising Committee submitted a total
of 14 grant proposals and letters of interest for general organizational
support as well as project related funding. Each grant proposal helps
RtE become more focused on its future environmental, and education
and outreach agendas, and also leads to increased recognition
within the environmental and grant communities.
• January 2006 RtE submitted a proposal to the Acorn Foundation
for general operating expenses and to allow us to hire a
part-time office manager.
�• March 2006 RtE submitted a proposal to New Belgium Brewing
Company for funding in support of RtE’s annual Summer Education
and Outreach Tour and to allow us to hire a part-time office
manager.
�• March 2006 RtE submitted a proposal to Odell Brewing Company
for an in-kind donation of 3 banners for RtE’s annual Summer
Education and Outreach Tour.
�• April 2006 RtE submitted a proposal to Daimler/Chrysler for an
in-kind donation of a new vehicle to be run on biodiesel for RtE’s
annual Summer Education and Outreach Tour.
�• June 2006 RtE submitted a proposal to the Wallace Global Fund
in the amount of $72,000 for a 2-year project titled, “Toward a
More Protective and Equitable National Park Service Colorado
River Management Plan.” The project proposal requested funding
in support of our legal/technical and educational/outreach
efforts aimed at preservation and restoration of the Colorado
River ecosystem in the stretch of the river that runs through
Grand Canyon National Park.
�• June 2006 RtE entered into a sponsorship agreement with
eMusic, the largest distributor of on-line music in the world. In
conjunction with this sponsorship, eMusic donated $4,000 to
RtE as well as donating 26,000 music download cards, which
were subsequently given out for free to interested music fans at
concerts and festivals throughout RtE’s annual Summer Education
and Outreach Campaign.
�• July 2006 RtE received a grant of $1,500 from New Belgium
Brewing Company.
�• August 2006 RtE submitted a proposal to Patagonia (national)
for funding in support of our legal & technical and educational
& outreach efforts aimed at preservation and restoration of the
Colorado River ecosystem in the stretch of the river that runs
through Grand Canyon National Park.
�• September 2006 RtE submitted Letters of Interest to Ben & Jerry’s
Foundation, the Shared Earth Foundation, and the Rockefeller
Family Foundation for funding in support of our legal & technical
and educational & outreach efforts aimed at preservation and

�• September 2006 RtE received unsolicited grants of $500 each
from 10,000 Lakes Festival and the Mark Vann Foundation.
�• November 2006 RtE submitted a proposal to Bretz Design for
an in-kind donation of services to redesign the RtE website and
back-end database.
�• November 2006 RtE submitted a proposal to the Fund for Wild
Nature for funding in support of our legal & technical and educational
& outreach efforts aimed at preservation and restoration
of the Colorado River ecosystem in the stretch of the river that
runs through Grand Canyon National Park.
�• November 2006 RtE submitted a proposal to the Streisand
Foundation for operational funding of $20,000 to support its
varied environmental projects across the country and its broad
outreach activities.
�• December 2006 RtE received a $1,000 grant from the Fund
for Wild Nature in support of our work on the Colorado River
Management Plan.
�• December 2006 RtE submitted proposals to the General Motors
Foundation and the Public Welfare Foundation to support a
variety of environmental projects across the country plus RtE’s
ongoing educational and outreach program
The Fundraising Committee has an ambitious grant writing agenda
for the coming year and is optimistic for continued success in 2007.

�• January 2006 A silent auction and a special ticketed event on Jam Cruise 4 raised over $18,000 to
offset RtE’s Greening Jam Cruise 4 program costs, to fund tree plantings to counteract emissions caused
by the festival, and to help offset RtE’s general operating budget.
�• July 2006 At the High Sierra Music Festival, the Happy Brigade, a Santa Cruz, California based group
held a cocktail party and fundraiser for RtE. With entertainment by the members of Railroad Earth,
Hot Buttered Rum String Band, Scott Law and others, the party raised over $500 for RtE in less than
ninety minutes.
�• July-August 2006 On-line auctions of VIP tickets to Gathering of the Vibes using Ebay’s Mission Fish
raised nearly $1,600 for RtE.
�• September 2006 Gone Global Productions held a benefit festival for RtE on September 17, 2006, at the
Jerry Garcia Amphitheatre in McLaren Park, San Francisco, CA. The concert featured Rubber Souldiers,
including David Gans, Chris Rowan and Lorin Rowan (the Rowan Bros), Robin Sylvester (Ratdog),
Barry Sless (Phil Lesh and Friends) and Adam Perry (The Love X Nowhere), with very special guests
including David Nelson and Martin Fierro, Blue Turtle Seduction, Zoo Station, The Trespassers,
and Mark Karan’s Buds, including Pete Sears (Flying Other Brothers), Robin Sylvester (Ratdog),
Jimmy Sanchez (Flying Other Brothers) and Jay Lane (Ratdog).
�• October 2006 Vegoose Music Festival held an on-line auction of VIP tickets and raised nearly $2,600
for RtE.
�• November 2006 Charity Folks held an on-line auction of concert tickets and backstage passes to
Bonnie Raitt’s concert in Broomfield, Colorado raising over $1,600 for RtE.
�• December 2006 A Mimi Fishman Foundation on-line auction raised in excess of $2,300 for RtE.
On-line auctions using Ebay’s Mission Fish raised $650 for RtE.
�• December 2006 In conjunction with RtE’s Greening Jam Cruise 5 program, RtE raised nearly $1,000
through the on-line sale of tickets to an educational program on Social Change Through Music. Sponsors
of the event were New Belgium Brewing Company, Odell Brewing Company and Terrapin Brewing
Company. Panelists included Martin Fierro (Zero), Zach Gill (ALO, Jack Johnson), Aaron Redner
(Hot Buttered Rum), Matt McDonald (Perpetual Groove), Tim Carbone (Railroad Earth) and Michael
Newton (Guayaki Yerba Mate).
��• December 2006 In conjunction with a party held by Colorado Front Range group of music and outdoor
enthusiasts known as Mountaingroove, RtE held a reception and silent auction at the Falling Rock Tap
House in Denver, Colorado. The event raised over $240 for RtE.
RtE greatly appreciates the generosity of everyone who donated items for auction, and acknowledges the
importance of these donations in helping RtE achieve its goals and pursue its mission.

Financial Report
Rock the Earth (RtE) continued to make progress in its third year as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organization.
As a result of the generosity of our increasing base of existing and new members, donors, grantors, musicians, and
corporate contributors, we ended the year in a position poised to increase our focus on environmental litigation and
the championing of important environmental issues as well as embarking on a significant capacity building campaign.
The Colorado River litigation and other environmental issue pursuits will engage significant portions of our resources
in the upcoming year. Our commitment to this and other issues has enabled our organization to attract members as
reflected in the increase in membership and auction revenue, and corporate and private donors who are interested in
contributing toward the mission-focused activities in which the organization engages and will play a vital role in the
organizations continued growth and vitality in the upcoming years.
During the year, RtE began, for the first time in its history, to pay a part-time staff person as well as the Executive
Director. The organization will continue its capacity building goal in the upcoming year by employing a part time Development
Director to move the organization even closer to its financial and fundraising goals, necessary to increase
the program and education services that the organization provides. The addition of these paid positions will utilize a
fair portion of the organizations resources in the near future.
In 2006, RtE raised more than $102,000 in total income, approximately a 40% increase over the previous year,
primarily through increases in auction revenue, membership dues, and donations. This is a significant increase in
revenue from the previous year which will enable the organization to focus our efforts on our core mission activities
and fund our new paid leadership and staff positions. The organization continues to improve its fundraising efforts
through enhanced relationships with musicians and the
music industry, green and sustainable businesses and
corporate donors, grantors, and special partnerships and
events that creatively engage our membership, private
donors, and the community in general.
The majority of Rock the Earth’s expenses included Membership
and Outreach and Program Services with a focus
on education of the public and our members on the various
environmental issues that the music industry and our
organization feel strongly about. The increase in Education
related expenses, which directly contribute toward
the fulfillment of the organization’s mission, increased
dramatically from the previous year.
In addition, this was the first year that the organization
incurred expenses related to the litigation of environmental
issues, most specifically the Colorado River Management
Plan. There was a small Net Loss for the year as a

result of incurring capacity building expenses that were expected to be offset by grant
revenue, which was less than anticipated. The addition of a Development Director will
increase the reliability of the various revenue streams in the upcoming year.
Rock the Earth ended the year with approximately $26,000 in the bank, a small
decrease from the previous year.
The success that Rock the Earth continues to enjoy in its third year as a nonprofit organization
highlights the continued sacrifices and hard work that the volunteer and paid
staff, leadership positions, Board and Advisory Board members have made to ensure
the organization’s continued success and the committed and generous membership
base, both of which continue to sustain the organization financially and otherwise.
