President’s Message 

“Out of all those millions and millions of planets floating around there in space, this 

is our planet, this is our little one, so we just got to be aware of it and take care of it.”

It’s often been said that “it’s darkest before the 

dawn” and never has that age-old adage been more 

appropriate to describe Rock the Earth’s road over the 

past several years during a challenging economy. But 

from the dawn of 2012, we knew that Rock the Earth had 

not only survived the worst economy in a generation but 

was well on the road to recovery and success. In fact, 

2012 turned out to be one of our most successful years 

in our short nine-year history. Whether viewed from the 

standpoint of program accomplishments and progress in 

environmental cases, concert dates worked in a year (our 

2nd highest year ever), new and renewing members, or 

partnerships with other organizations, 2012 was a year 

of tremendous growth and success for the organization. 

Nowhere was this organization’s success more evident 

than in the June 22, 2012 Federal Court victory in 

our long-standing litigation against the Bureau of Land 

Management (BLM) over a drilling plan for Colorado’s 

Roan Plateau – one of the last remaining wildernessquality 

lands in the state. As a primary basis for her 

decision to remand the case back to BLM for further 

study, Judge Marcia Krieger specifically cited to Rock 

the Earth’s 2005 argument to BLM that a communityapproved 

plan to restrict drilling to areas outside of the 

areas in question was a viable and reasonable option 

that BLM had improperly failed to consider. Although the 

organization has chalked up several key environmental 

victories and has been on the receiving end of favorable 

outcomes over our brief lifetime, this decision marked 

Rock the Earth’s first court victory! 

In addition to the victory on the Roan, some of the other 

highlights contained within this 2012 Annual Report are: 

Rock the Earth brought the third lawsuit in 

the organization’s history by joining with other 

conservation organizations to sue the National 

Park Service over the proposed Roseland to 

Susquehanna Power Line. This project would 

result in a massive power line super-structure 

being constructed through what is collectively the 

most utilized unit in the National Park System in 

the Northeastern United States – the Delaware 

Water Gap National Recreation Area and across the 

Appalachian National Scenic Trail. 

Rock the Earth announced our first formal 

partnerships with national and regional 

organizations in which our organization provided 

public education, outreach, and citizen engagement 

campaigns on behalf of other organizations. This 

year, we addressed mountain top mining on behalf 

of Earthjustice, and worked with Friends of 

Browns Canyon/The Wilderness Society on 

their campaign to have Browns Canyon declared a 

new National Monument. 

For the seventh consecutive year, Rock the Earth 

created compelling environmental programming at the 

Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, with a series 

of artist interviews, panel discussions and musical 

performances on the theme of Social Change 

Through Music. In addition, for the third time in as 

many years, we hosted Green Screens Presented 

by Rock the Earth, a series of award-winning 

environmental films, in Bonnaroo’s Cinema Tent. 

Rock the Earth had a presence at 192 concert dates 

throughout the United States in 2012, working with 

such high-profile artists as My Morning Jacket, 

The Dave Matthews Band, Wilco, Allman 

Brothers Band and the Barenaked Ladies. 

Rock the Earth’s volunteer legal and technical 

staff reviewed and/or worked on 13 separate, 

substantive issues and projects brought to our 

attention by Rock the Earth supporters in the music 

community. 

As this report demonstrates, 2012 was a year of 

tremendous progress, solidifying our place as a fixture in 

the music and environmental communities. With strong 

tailwinds at our back, I am enthusiastic about Rock the 

Earth’s potential to grow in new ways in 2013. Through 

our new programmatic partnerships with national 

organizations such as Earthjustice and The Wilderness 

Society, we can continue to leverage our volunteer 

network and our brand in the music industry to raise

awareness of important environmental issues and became an 

even more-valued asset in the environmental community. 

Rock the Earth remains committed to protecting the planet’s most 

threatened natural places, while continuing to educate, engage 

and inspire music fans to take action to help us create a sustainable 

and healthy planet. In a year that marked more environmental 

challenges to the planet and an election where candidates failed 

to directly address pressing environmental issues such as climate 

change, fracking, and mountain top removal mining, Rock the Earth 

held firm in its commitment to highlight important environmental

issues and educate and inspire the public to take action. As we 

continue to move towards our 10th anniversary in 2014, our future 

has never been brighter or our mission more clear.

Environmental Accomplishments 

We are proud to report that in 2012 Rock the Earth’s 

environmental advocacy and educational projects continued 

to expand, impacting environmental issues and the public in 

profound ways. 

Not only did we continue to prosecute our second lawsuit in federal 

court, but as a result we came away with our first federal court victory 

to protect Colorado’s Roan Plateau! Also, for the first time in our 

history, we expanded our program activities to specifically conduct two 

environmental education & citizen engagement campaigns on behalf of 

other organizations in a fee-for-service arrangement! Combined, these 

two campaigns engaged and activated thousands of concert goers with 

significant and measurable outcomes. In addition, we initiated a third 

lawsuit in federal court, expanded our program to keep thousands of 

cellular telephones out of landfills, and continued to see the very real and 

positive results from our ongoing education and advocacy campaigns. 

The music community continued to embrace Rock the Earth by 

engaging us for the seventh time to conduct environmental education 

at Bonnaroo in Manchester, TN, the largest festival in the United 

States and for the fifth time at Summer Camp in Chillicothe, IL. In 

addition to our annual work on the Bonnaroo Solar Stage, we once 

again headed up Green Screens Presented by Rock the Earth, an 

environmental film series, in the Cinema Tent. 

Throughout the year, Rock the Earth’s experienced legal and 

technical team continued to move forward on several new issues, 

while continuing to research and investigate issues brought to us by 

the music community. 

On January 31, 2012, Rock the Earth presented 

formal comments to the National Park Service to the Draft 

Kepner Middle School Urban Garden (Denver, CO) – April 2012 

Environmental Impact Statement for a proposed plan to 

construct new, 200-foot power line towers right through the 

heart of three nationally significant areas: the New Jersey 

Highlands, the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation 

Area, and the Appalachian National Scenic Trail (a/k/a 

Roseland to Susquehanna Power Line). Rock the Earth 

became involved in this case at the suggestion of Railroad 

Earth’s Tim Carbone. 

On February 21, 2012, Rock the Earth presented 

formal comments to the U.S. EPA regarding the draft (2013) 

General National Pollutant Discharge Elimination Permit 

for Vessels (i.e., cruise ships). In our comments, we made 

suggestions for improvements to the draft permit, including asking 

that EPA take a harder look at certain discharges, that cruise ships 

be required to publish discharge monitoring reports, and that 

there be greater transparency and education on the part of cruise 

lines vis-à-vis customers. 

On March 7, 2012, Rock the Earth legal and technical 

staff submitted comments to the National Park Service on the 

Notice of Intent to Prepare Supplemental Environmental 

Impact Statement for the Winter Use Plan, for Yellowstone 

National Park. Since 2002, Rock the Earth has actively opposed all 

plans that have allowed for the continued use of snowmobiles in the 

Parks, based on the fact that the use of snowmobiles is both harmful 

to the environment and negatively impacts visitor experience. 

For the third time in four years, Rock the Earth co-sponsored 

a community service project with the Revision International, a 

Denver-based nonprofit organization. With Revision, Rock the Earth 

helped to expand a community garden at the Kepner Middle School, 

in Denver’s Westwood neighborhood. The garden was 

created to grow fresh, healthy and organic produce for 

the school and the community, which is considered a 

“food desert,” lacking easy-to-obtain local and organic 

vegetables and fruit. In New York, NY, Rock the Earth 

celebrated Earth Day with a volunteer cleanup of 

historic Astoria Park. 

Rock the Earth conducted 

cellular telephone recycling campaigns at various 

music festivals and during our Summer Education & 

Outreach Tour across the United States, resulting in 

the collection of over 2,500 cell phones. Participating 

festivals included Summer Camp, Del Fest, 

Meadowgrass, Wakarusa, Mountain Jam, 

Bonnaroo, Forecastle and Rockygrass. These 

collection campaigns were conducted in partnership 

with Pace Butler and LiveNation/Musictoday.


Browns Canyon, Colorado 

Rock the Earth, in collaboration with the 

University of North Carolina at Greensboro, led a cell 

phone collection campaign, resulting in nearly 800 cell phones 

collected and being diverted from possible disposal in landfills. 

Rock the Earth announced its first formal 

comprehensive collaboration to conduct public education and 

citizen engagement in a regional campaign on behalf of the 

Friends of Browns Canyon and The Wilderness Society. 

During this summer-long campaign, Rock the Earth volunteers 

engaged the public at over 50 concert dates in Colorado, 

educating them about the need for permanent protection for 

Browns Canyon as a National Monument and having over 

1,500 people directly sign a petition to Senator Mark Udall 

supporting this issue. 

Rock the Earth announced a partnership with 

Earthjustice to conduct public education and citizen engagement 

on a national campaign, in conjunction with Earthjustice’s 

Mountain Heroes photo petition drive. During this summer-long 

campaign, Rock the Earth volunteers engaged the public at over 

90 concert dates throughout the United States, educating them 

about the need to stop the devastatingly damaging practice 

known as Mountain Top Removal Mining. Over the course of 

the campaign, over 15,000 photo petitions were uploaded to the 

Mountain Heroes website, which petitions were submitted to the 

White House Council on Environmental Quality. 

2 On June 22, 2012, federal court Judge Marcia 

Krieger ruled that the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) 

didn’t follow protocol when it approved a plan for allowing 

oil and natural gas development on the biologically rich Roan 

Plateau in western Colorado, and specifically cited to Rock 

the Earth’s 2005 argument. This victory for Rock the Earth and 

our conservation partners resulted in a remand of the drilling 

plan to BLM to review specifically a community alternative that 

would allow for well development and recovery of natural gas 

outside of the wilderness quality lands. This also marked Rock 

the Earth’s first litigation victory! 

At the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, Rock 

the Earth hosted daily interviews with musical performances 

on the Solar Stage on Social Change Through Music featuring 

Chad Stokes (Dispatch, State Radio), SOJA, Katie 

Herzig, Infamous Stringdusters, Rubblebucket, ALO, Hey 

Rosetta!, Red Baraat, Stooges Brass Band, Honey Island 

Swamp Band, Blind Pilot, The Deep Dark Woods and 

Bhakti. Additional participants in discussing how activists and

artists collaborate to bring about social change were: Ivan Neville 

(Dumpstaphunk) and Ayn Pivonka (Gulf Restoration Network), 

for a discussion about New Orleans environmental and social issues, 

and an interview with Dennis Casey and Bob Schmidt (Flogging 

Molly). Green Screens Presented by Rock the Earth drew 

standing-room-only crowds to the festival’s Cinema Tent each day and 

featured screenings of the Sundance award-winning film Chasing 

Ice, The Big Fix, The Island President, Last Call at the Oasis 

and #ReGeneration. Pre- and post-show programming featured Israel 

Nebeker (Blind Pilot), Jeff Orlowski, Ivan Neville, Ayn Pivonka, 

Bob Ferguson (Oxfam), Phillip Montgomery, Matt DeRoss, 

Ashley Hillis, David Whiteside (Tennessee Riverkeeper) and 

Lindsay Guetschow (Participant Media). 

On August 15, 2012, Rock the Earth submitted formal 

comments to the National Park Service on the Supplemental 

Environmental Impact Statement for the Winter Use Plan for 

Yellowstone National Park, opposing the preferred alternative’s 

extensive snowmobile use, and advocating for the use of 

snowcoaches and an immediate reduction of snowmobile use. Rock 

the Earth firmly believes that snowmobile use is not compatible with 

the scenic, aesthetic and wildlife values of Yellowstone National 

Park, our nation’s first National Park. 

On October 15, 2012, Rock the Earth and a coalition 

of conservation groups sued the National Park Service (NPS) in 

Federal Court over the proposed Roseland to Susquehanna Power 

Line. The suit against the NPS challenges the agency’s approval 

and environmental review of the 500-kilovolt (kV) transmission 

line through the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, 

the Middle Delaware National Scenic and Recreational River, and 

Dennis Casey & Bob Schmidt (Flogging Molly) with RtE Executive

Buckhorn Mountain Exploration Project 

the Appalachian National Scenic Trail (collectively, the “Parks”). 

Despite NPS’s governing mandate to protect the National Park 

System and to prevent impairment to park resources, the NPS has 

authorized a project that the agency acknowledges will have serious 

and enduring impacts on the Parks. 

Rock the Earth wrapped up our ninth National and 

Regional Summer Education and Outreach Tours. The tours took 

place over a 21-week period, consisting of 121 events and 145 

concert dates. 

Rock the Earth participated in Frack-Free Colorado, 

a public event to educate and engage the public on the issue of 

hydro-fracking, the controversial process used in conjunction with 

natural gas drilling. The downtown Denver rally featured Daryl 

Hannah, The Wallflowers’ Jakob Dylan and Rami Jaffee, 

Elephant Revival with Vince Herman (Leftover Salmon), 

Mariel Hemingway, race car driver and environmentalist Leilani 

Munter, and acclaimed author and ecologist Sandra Steingraber 

as well as other speakers from the activist and political communities. 

On December 6, 2012, Rock the Earth and its 

Plaintiff Partners filed a Motion for Preliminary Injunction 

against the National Park Service in Federal Court to stop the 

construction and pre-construction activities that had begun on 

segments of the Roseland to Susquehanna Power Line in New 

Jersey and Pennsylvania. Rock the Earth argued that a preliminary 

injunction is needed to prevent damage that would occur to the 

Parks before the court can decide the pending claims.

In addition to the formal legal and educational activities that 

Rock the Earth conducted in 2012, our legal and technical staff 

members reviewed or monitored the following issues: 


Continued to monitor attempts by the U.S. Army to expand Fort 

Carson and the Piñon Canyon Maneuver Site near Colorado 

Springs, CO, without an adequate environmental review. 

Continued to monitor the Buckhorn Mountain Exploration 

Project, a proposed plan to significantly expand gold mining and 

exploration activities in North Central Washington State. 

Continued to conduct public education and citizen engagement 

for the continued cleanup of North Carolina’s Pigeon River, a 

waterway of importance to legendary guitarist Warren Haynes. 

For several years, Rock the Earth legal and technical staff have 

been monitoring and commenting on the discharge permit for 

a paper mill to the Pigeon River, which mill has had repeated 

violations of the Clean Water Act. 

Continued to monitor the Scoping Process for the National Park 

Service’s Wild & Scenic designation for the Tuolumne River in 

Northern California, an issue suggested by Hot Buttered Rum. 

At the suggestion of Jackson Browne, continued our support of 

the Plastic Pollution Coalition with a joint advocacy campaign 

to educate and advocate for reducing the use of single-use, 

disposable plastic products. 

Continued to monitor EPA’s decision to study the natural gas 

drilling process known as hydraulic fracturing, in anticipation 

of future regulatory requirements, and encouraged Rock the Earth 

constituents to ask EPA to regulate the process long-suspected of 

causing environmental damage and water pollution. 

Continued to monitor 2011 Federal Guidance Document for the 

determination and management of wetlands that come under the 

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ federal jurisdiction and regulation. 

In reviewing our actions from 2012, Rock the Earth continues to 

demonstrate that it is the pre-eminent environmental advocacy 

organization to work with the music community. Not only do 

we effectively continue to prosecute important cases in federal 

court, but our track record of being an effective force grows as the 

projects that we have opposed in support of the public interest (and 

educated thousands of concert goers to also take action and oppose) 

are withdrawn. As we look to 2013, we anticipate additional legal 

victories, environmental achievements, and new legal actions 

brought on behalf of the music community. 

Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area

Membership & Outreach Accomplishments 

Throughout 2012, Rock the Earth’s dedicated teams of volunteers 

educated and interacted with music fans at over 165 concerts 

and festivals across the United States. This represented a 28% 

increase over 2011 in our core educational and outreach activities. The 

key factor in this dramatic increase was incorporating our new program 

activity -- public education and citizen engagement in partnership with 

other national and regional groups in a fee-for-service arrangement 

-- into our historical program activities. This growth also reflects the 

overall improving economic conditions of the organization. 

As a result of our expanded activities, overall membership for the 

year experienced slight gains over 2011, with a relative increase in 

membership dollars while maintaining a steady renewal rate comparable 

to 2011. Meanwhile, Rock the Earth reached an estimated 1.2 million 

concert attendees, educated tens of thousands of people about critical 

environmental issues, and attracted new members to the cause. 

Our eighth year of Rock the Earth’s Internship Program proved once again 

that it is vital to the success of the organization. In connection with 

Rock the Earth’s new partnerships with Earthjustice (nationally) and The 

Wilderness Society (regionally), we expanded our intern program and 

doubled the number of paid tour coordinators to lead these campaigns. 

With a total of nine Education and Outreach interns, all working under 

the guidance and direction of our two Internship Tour Coordinator, Rock 

the Earth was able to participate in more events around the country than 

otherwise would have been possible using only regional teams. 

Overall, our year of operations was full of exciting new opportunities, 

accomplishments and connections, including the following notable 

achievements: 

121 events (145 concert dates) over five months, during which 

time we raised nearly $27,000, gained nearly 665 new members, 

and added nearly 2,900 new contacts to our mailing list; 

Partnered directly with the following bands and tours (among 

others) throughout the year: 

– Journey, Pat Benatar, and Loverboy (13 shows) 

– Dave Matthews Band (13 shows) 

– My Morning Jacket (9 shows) 

– Last Summer on Earth (Barenaked Ladies, Cracker, Big 

Head Todd & the Monsters, Blues Traveler) (8 shows) 

– Wilco (7 shows) 

– Allman Brothers Band (3 shows) 

Presented eco-oriented musician panels, cell phone recycling, and 

other scheduled programs at high-profile music festivals including 

Bonnaroo, Summer Camp, DelFest, Forecastle, Mountain Jam, 

and RockyGrass. 

Partnered directly with multiple venues and promoters, which 

enabled Rock the Earth to reach new audiences and to build a 

strong presence in the regional music communities: 

– Best Buy Theater at Times Square (New York, NY) 

– Bluebird Theater (Denver, CO) 

– Fillmore at Irving Plaza (New York, NY) 

– Fillmore Auditorium (Denver, CO) 

– Boulder Theater (Boulder, CO) 

– Ogden Theater (Denver, CO) 

– Walther Productions (DC & Baltimore, MD) 

Gained the support of over 845 new members 

and increased our constituent base to over 43,000 

people; 

Of the members whose memberships lapsed in 

2011, 16% renewed their memberships in 2012; 

Recruited over 1227 potential volunteers, from 

which we organized and trained over 100 volunteers 

nationwide; 

Raised nearly $64,000 in RtE memberships to 

support our project work and outreach programs; 

Volunteers donated over 10,000 hours of time to 

help advance RtE’s mission; 

Worked 167 events in 25 states, totaling 192 

concert dates; 

Completed our ninth Education and Outreach 

Summer Tour over a period of 21 weeks, working

In addition to returning to the road with long-time music partners 

like the Dave Matthews Band, the Allman Brothers Band, and 

Barenaked Ladies, we were excited to receive invitations to 

be an environmental partner on the national tours by Wilco, 

Journey, and My Morning Jacket, further diversifying the scope 

of music fans that we were able to reach in 2012. 

Educating music fans from diverse locations, demographics 

and age groups is important to us, so we try to partner with 

musicians and bands from different genres. We are happy to 

report we have gained respect and support from over 500 artists 

in the nine years RtE has been defending the planet. 

Largely due to the new partnerships as well as the improving 

economy, Rock the Earth not only experienced our second 

busiest Education and Summer Outreach Tour in our history, but 

also witnessed an increase in individual charitable donations. 

To that end, there was an increase in new members (up nearly 


9% over 2011). Meanwhile, perhaps also a sign of the economic 

times, our past supporters dug deep, renewing memberships at 

a rate slightly higher than 2011 (at 16%). 

Unfortunately, as we saw in 2011 and despite the gains in new 

members and our renewals remaining steady, for a second year 

in a row our active membership stayed below the 1,800 member 

threshold – a threshold we first crossed in 2007. Part of this decline 

in active membership is likely due to the refocus of the organization 

on fulfilling contractual obligations regarding public education and 

citizen engagement and also in part due to a lagging economy in 

2009-2011. As noted, there are however, positive signs as in 2012, 

the organization gained the most new and renewing members 

that it had since 2009. As the economy continues to show signs 

of recovery, we are confident that the organization is positioned to 

regain momentum as we move into our tenth year of educating and 

inspiring music fans across the country to join with Rock the Earth in 

protecting our natural resources.

Fundraising Accomplishments 

Grants 

For the first time in several years, Rock the Earth started to see a turnaround in 

economic conditions as well as continued progress in our program work. As a result, 

the organization began to show success in our grant initiatives and other fundraising 

endeavors. RtE’s Development Committee submitted over a dozen grant proposals and 

letters of interest for general organizational support as well as project-related funding. 

Awarded grants help RtE advance its current and future environmental and education and 

outreach agendas, and also result in increased recognition within the environmental and 

grant communities. 

January – December 2012 RtE submitted grant proposals to the following foundations, 

organizations and corporations to fund program activities, offset operational expenses, 

and provide for professional development and capacity building, as well as provide 

funding in support of our annual Education and Outreach Tour: Padi Foundation, Jet Blue, 

Singing for Change Foundation, Lauren Townsend Memorial Fund, Sprint, Patagonia, 

Make Yourself Foundation, Stoneyfield Farms, Wolcott Family Foundation, Merck Family 

Foundation, F. Allen & Louise K. Turner Foundation, and Cedar Tree Foundation. 

January 2012 RtE received a $300 grant from the Anneta Argyres & James 

Levenson Family Fund 

March 2012 RtE received a $250 matching grant from the Clorox Company Foundation. 

April 2012 RtE received a $5,000 grant from the Patagonia Foundation in relation 

to their Patagonia Music Collective.

a promotional contest for their new Moosejaw Mountaineering store in Boulder, CO.

November 2012 RtE received a $4,070 grant from the East Tennessee Foundation. 

RtE was one of five charities benefiting from the annual silent auction at the Bonnaroo 

Music and Arts Festival in Manchester, TN. 

December 2012 RtE received the following grants: 

– $7,500 grant from the Patagonia Foundation in support of our Roan Plateau 

litigation and education and outreach efforts. 

– $1,000 grant from the F. Allen & Louise K. Turner Foundation in support of our 

Delaware River Valley litigation and education and outreach efforts. 

– $700 grant from the Aria Foundation on behalf of Bonnie Raitt. 

– Notice of a $5,000 grant from the Wolcott Family Foundation in support of our 

Roan Plateau litigation and education and outreach efforts. 

RtE has once again, contracted with a professional grant-writer/consultant to develop 

an ambitious grant-writing agenda for the coming year, and is optimistic for increased 

success in awarded grants in 2013.

VIP tickets donated by FloydFest, Summer Camp, Bonnaroo, 

Outside Lands, All Good Festival, and Gathering of the 

Vibes, as well as a signed David Welker

July 2012 Summer Camp donated the proceeds raised at 

a backstage bar to Rock the Earth in the amount of $1,500; 

Mountain Jam Festival donated $344. 

November 2012 Rock the Earth held a fundraiser during its annual 

Board and Staff Retreat at the Vine Street Pub and Brewery 

(Denver, CO), raising over $3,000. Performing during the festivities 

were Daniella Katzir (Magnolia Row), Greg Garrison (Leftover 

Salmon), Dave Devine, and Bill Larson. Beer was donated by 

Sixpoint Brewery (Brooklyn, NY), and thanks to Hapa Sushi, 

Illegal Pete’s, Rio Grande, and Chocolatier Blue, there was 

also complimentary food for our guests. 

RtE sincerely appreciates the generosity and charitable 

inclinations of all those who donated items for auction, and 

acknowledges the incredible importance of this invaluable 

support in helping us advance the organization’s mission as we 

continue the work towards achieving our goals. 

April 2012 In support of our Rock the Earth 

Day 2012 activities, fundraising events were 

held in partnership with Calafia Café (Palo 

Alto, CA), TAG Restaurant (Denver, CO), 

Herbs & Arts (Denver ,CO), and a benefit

May 2012 Grassroots California in 

Denver, CO, made a donation of $420 as a 

result of the sale of a hat to benefit Rock the 

Earth. Thanks to a cell phone collection drive

collected resulting in a donation of over 

$1,500 to Rock the Earth.

Financial Report 

Rock the Earth had a strong ninth year as a 501(c)(3) taxexempt 

organization. In fact, after a few years of declining 

or flat finances, 2012 marked a return to modest growth for 

the organization in several key areas. The organization experienced 

greater income in 2012 compared to both budget and the previous 

year, attributable in large part to the initiation of a new program 

involving partnerships with other nonprofit organizations that 

compensated us for our services. Rock the Earth successfully 

fulfilled two contracts this year with Friends of Browns Canyon/The 

Wilderness Society and with Earthjustice, in which over the course 

of five months, Rock the Earth volunteers conducted extensive 

education, outreach and citizen activation on behalf of these 

organizations. Rock the Earth plans to grow this program in 2013, 

increasing the fees charged for our services, as well as expanding 

the number of partnerships contracted. 

2012 served as a test year for this new program, challenging our 

volunteers at the tables to educate people at concerts on the 

issues of our clients (gathering signatures/photos for petitions), 

while continuing to solicit memberships and donations for Rock the 

Earth. Although there was a moderate increase in the number of 

concert dates worked in 2012 as a result of the new partnerships, 

our membership numbers remained 

relatively stable with 2011. A slight 

increase in members enabled us to 

meet our budgeted membership income 

for the year and outperform 2011. 

Emerging from a challenging year in 2011, the organization utilized 

the same cost containment measures it had used in 2010 and 2011. 

Rock the Earth started off 2012 with limited staff – paid staff consisted 

of a part-time office manager and a full-time Executive Director. 

However, after recognizing strong income in the First Quarter of the 

year, the organization returned to its full staffing complement of 

two, full-time paid employees, and returned the Executive Director’s 

compensation to pre-recessionary (2009) levels. As we look forward 

to 2013, the organization is planning to increase the number of paid 

staff by adding our first Program Director to support Rock the Earth’s 

Education & Outreach program and partnerships. 

In 2012, Rock the Earth raised approximately $130,000 in total 

revenue, a 47.8% increase over the previous year and just short 

of our budget at 94.2% of budget. Along with the organization’s 

foundation of generous individual membership support, Rock the 

Earth’s new partnership program truly helped sustain the financial 

stability of the organization in 2012 and has given us great 

confidence that 2013 will be a prosperous year for us. 

Rock the Earth ended 2012 with approximately $35,000 in the 

bank (an increase of about $15,000 over the previous year’s

year, our development team continued 

to submit a steady stream of grant 

proposals, and in the Fourth Quarter of 

the year we were rewarded with grant 

notifications from several foundations 

(including the Turner and Wolcott 

Family Foundations and Patagonia). 

These grants increased grant funding 

over our budgeted goals and 2011 

levels. Meanwhile, auction and 

special event revenue also increased 

modestly over the previous year, 

further demonstrating a positive turn 

in the overall economic conditions.

organization on multiple levels.
