Management consulting
May keeps focus
on smaller biz
While rival consultancies
chase lucrative
relationships
with Fortune 1000
clients, George S. May
International Co. is
happy to focus on
small and mediumsized
businesses, ranging
from auto dealerships
to nursing
homes and typically
generating less than
$100 million in annual
revenues. Some
May clients have as
few as 10 employees
and $1 million in
sales. To
get its foot
in the door,
May offers
prospective
clients a
business
analysis
Kushnir
priced as low as $350.
“Our business analysis
is like the X-ray before
the operation,”
says President Israel
Kushnir. “We just
don’t charge very
much for the X-ray.”
May’s revenues have
been flat of late, but
then again it didn’t
suffer as much in the
aftermath of Sept. 11
as most other consultants.
Mr. Kushnir believes
the small business
marketplace is
more stable. “In big
organizations when it
comes time to tighten
the belt, consultants
are the first to go.
Smaller companies
don’t think that way,”
he says.
