Hot at Hammacher
Schlemmer: the $50
Progression Wake-Up
Clock, which wakes you
with light, nature sounds
and aromatherapy.
Gadget seller
grows online
After 20 years on
the Magnificent
Mile, Hammacher
Schlemmer closed
its retail store in the
Tribune Tower in
February. It also
moved its nearby
headquarters to the
suburbs. That leaves
a single retail location,
on 57th Street
in New York. “For
the near term we
will be without a retail
outlet here in
Chicago,” says Fred
Berns, vice-president
of marketing.
“We’re looking at
other possible options.”
Hammacher
Schlemmer mails
more than 30 million
catalogs a year;
they remain the
company’s primary
sales vehicle, but the
Internet is gaining
fast. Growing 30%
a year for three
years running,
Hammacher’s Web
sales now account
for fully one-third
of total sales. Still,
spirited competition
from bigger catalogers
has left Hammacher’s
volume
flat. But the company’s
reputation for
quirky gadgets remains
intact. A current
best seller: the
$50 Progression
Wake-Up Clock,
which lets you use
aromatherapy to
help wake up.
