Turano’s growth
is carbo-loaded
M
aybe the low-carb
diet fad has been
overblown all along. Even
at the height of the antibread
phenomenon in
2003, Campagna-Turano
kept growing, introducing
new products in its artisan
bread collection, including
ethnic specialties such as
focaccia and ciabatta.
When sales of white-flour
baguettes slowed, the
company came back with
raisin-walnut loaves and
rosemary and olive oil
boules. The new breads
are as good for the top line
as for the digestive tract:
An ordinary baguette runs
$2 at retail, while a multigrain
loaf can go for $4
and more. “These artisan
breads are obviously more
costly, but we’re finding
that consumers will pay
for quality,” says Joseph
Turano, operations manager
of the Berwyn plant.
Richco’s China plant serves
customers like Panasonic.
Richco looking
for acquisitions
The weak dollar hasn’t
helped manufacturers
like Richco, which has
plants in Chicago, suburban
Harvard, England
and Spain. In January
Richco opened its first
China plant, which spans
40,000 square feet and
employs 40. “We’re servicing
customers like Motorola,
Dell and Panasonic,
which have facilities
nearby for their own
manufacturing and assembly,”
says President
Frederick Streicher, who
runs Richco day-to-day.
(CEO Samantha Richardson
is the widow of
founder Craig Richardson,
who died in October
2002.) Mr. Streicher has
hired engineers and expanded
research and development.
He’s on the
lookout for acquisitions.
“We’re financially strong
and have the resources to
do deals,” he says.
