Harness Racing<br />

2012 Major Activities in Relation to Harness Racing<br />

• <strong>RWWA</strong> provided harness race clubs with payments for<br />

stakes of $22.7M.<br />

• <strong>RWWA</strong> paid out an additional $1.07M in WestBred<br />

bonuses.<br />

• Race clubs conducted a total of 277 race meetings and<br />

2,295 races, which provided 23,388 racing opportunities<br />

for 2,069 individual horses.<br />

• The 23,388 starters were trained by 510 individual<br />

trainers with 56 trainers having 100 or more starters for<br />

the season and 21 having 200 or more starters for the<br />

season.<br />

• TAB wagering on Western Australian harness racing<br />

increased from last year by $5.6M or 7.73%.<br />

• The 2012 V75 Inter Dominion Championship was held at<br />

Gloucester Park with significant increases in attendances<br />

and wagering turnover experienced during the entire<br />

series. The eventual winner of the 2012 Inter Dominion<br />

was the Western Australian owned and trained IM<br />

THEMIGHTYQUINN.<br />

• Gary Hall Snr set a new Western Australian stakemoney<br />

record for a trainer with starters from his stable earning<br />

more than $2.6M for the season from a total of 118<br />

winners.<br />

• The Australasian Young Drivers Championship was held<br />

in Perth during the last week of the Inter Dominion<br />

series and was won by Victorian reinsperson Ellen<br />

Tormey. Local driver Morgan Woodley represented<br />

Western Australia.<br />

• Perth Junior Driver Aiden De Campo won the Western<br />

Australian Rising Stars Series and represented the State<br />

in New South Wales, winning a heat of the Junior Driver<br />

Series in June.<br />

• A new directions paper was developed for harness<br />

outlining key strategic opportunities for the 2012/13 -<br />

2013/14 racing seasons, addressing key issues around<br />

Positioning and Diversification of Product, Enhancement<br />

to Industry Participants and Marketing and Promotion.<br />

• Funding for the Bunbury Trotting Club kitchen upgrade<br />

and refurbishment was approved with total project<br />

costs of $727K. The current kitchen facilities did not<br />

meet current health requirements and there was<br />

consideration by the City of Bunbury in withdrawing the<br />

capacity of the club to continue to operate as a kitchen.<br />

These new modern facilities will not only meet all the<br />

health requirements of the City of Bunbury, but will be a<br />

key revenue driver for the Club and provide an income<br />

stream on race days and non race days.<br />

• A ‘Sprint Lane’ was installed at Pinjarra Paceway.<br />
