2007 CONFERENCE<br />

SAAD AGM<br />

<strong>The</strong> Annual General Meet<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> SAAD was held after<br />

<strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> Conference and was attended by significant<br />

numbers, always a sign <strong>of</strong> a healthy <strong>Society</strong>.<br />

Follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> adoption <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>utes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> last AGM<br />

(2006), <strong>the</strong> Chairman (Dr Diana Terry) reported that<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Society</strong> is <strong>in</strong> good shape, ready to face <strong>the</strong> challenges<br />

ahead. <strong>The</strong>re are SAAD Board members (Trustees) on all<br />

<strong>the</strong> important committees related to conscious sedation<br />

<strong>in</strong> dentistry. <strong>The</strong> National Course <strong>in</strong> Conscious Sedation<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ues to provide <strong>the</strong> def<strong>in</strong>itive tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g medium,<br />

with <strong>24</strong>0 dentists and 180 dental nurses attend<strong>in</strong>g each<br />

year.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Secretary (Dr Derek Debuse) dealt with<br />

correspondence received, and reported that <strong>the</strong><br />

arrangements with <strong>the</strong> Association <strong>of</strong> Anaes<strong>the</strong>tists <strong>of</strong><br />

Great Brita<strong>in</strong> and Ireland (AAGBI) were work<strong>in</strong>g well.<br />

Dr Stephen Jones presented <strong>the</strong> Treasurer’s report,<br />

announc<strong>in</strong>g a healthy state <strong>of</strong> affairs, enabl<strong>in</strong>g SAAD<br />

to contribute f<strong>in</strong>ancially to educational projects, thus<br />

fulfill<strong>in</strong>g and justify<strong>in</strong>g our charitable status.<br />

Each year, two Trustees retire from <strong>the</strong> SAAD Board.<br />

This year, Dr Paul Averley and Dr Avril Macpherson<br />

retired. Dr Averley was re-elected, while Dr Macpherson<br />

resigned from <strong>the</strong> Board. Dr Chris Holden was proposed,<br />

seconded and duly elected to <strong>the</strong> Board. <strong>The</strong>re is<br />

currently one vacancy on <strong>the</strong> Board.<br />

Dr Anthony Morton thanked <strong>the</strong> SAAD Trustees <strong>for</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir work to date and urged <strong>the</strong>m to cont<strong>in</strong>ue, s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

ef<strong>for</strong>ts are even more crucial <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> present climate. <br />

SAAD bursary <strong>for</strong> up to two weeks’<br />

secondment to an EU country<br />

<strong>The</strong> objectives <strong>of</strong> this scheme:<br />

• To promote and develop conscious sedation <strong>in</strong> a European country <strong>of</strong> choice with<strong>in</strong> that<br />

country’s state-funded healthcare system. (A hospital or academic <strong>in</strong>stitute would be <strong>the</strong><br />

preferred environment <strong>for</strong> such a secondment to occur.)<br />

• To develop and foster work<strong>in</strong>g relationships with European colleagues <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong><br />

conscious sedation.<br />

<strong>The</strong> candidate would be expected to:<br />

• Submit an outl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> proposed project prior to SAAD Council grant<strong>in</strong>g approval.<br />

• Deliver a report to SAAD Council on completion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> project.<br />

• Present a short paper at <strong>the</strong> Annual Meet<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
