transmucosal (<strong>in</strong>tranasal) sedation with midazolam.<br />

– A list <strong>of</strong> reference documents is supplied at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> document.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Expert Work<strong>in</strong>g Committee was widely<br />

representative <strong>of</strong> cl<strong>in</strong>icians provid<strong>in</strong>g sedation and<br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g sedation <strong>in</strong> hospitals and <strong>in</strong> primary dental care.<br />

make sure that <strong>the</strong>y comply with <strong>the</strong> new guidance. It will<br />

be up to commissioners <strong>of</strong> sedation services to ensure that<br />

<strong>the</strong> guidance is monitored to facilitate <strong>the</strong> safe provision<br />

<strong>of</strong> dental sedation.<br />

It is hoped that this guidance will go a long way to set<br />

new standards <strong>in</strong> patient safety particularly <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> area <strong>of</strong><br />

alternative sedation techniques. <br />

This document is to be read <strong>in</strong> conjunction with<br />

Conscious Sedation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Provision <strong>of</strong> Dental Care. Report<br />

<strong>of</strong> an Expert Group on Sedation <strong>for</strong> Dentistry, Stand<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Dental Advisory Committee (SDAC) 2003, and is not<br />

meant to supersede it. <strong>The</strong>se comb<strong>in</strong>ed documents<br />

will be <strong>the</strong> authoritative guidance that will be used to<br />

monitor <strong>the</strong> provision <strong>of</strong> sedation <strong>in</strong> any facility where<br />

dental sedation is provided.<br />

It is vital <strong>for</strong> all sedationists and dentists provid<strong>in</strong>g<br />

sedation to review <strong>the</strong>ir protocols, facilities and staff to<br />

A pilot scheme <strong>for</strong> SAAD members<br />

SAAD Council has recently approved a scheme to loan <strong>in</strong>halational sedation and<br />

scaveng<strong>in</strong>g systems <strong>for</strong> a six-month trial period to SAAD members.<br />

<strong>The</strong> two successful applicants will have <strong>the</strong> opportunity to purchase <strong>the</strong> systems<br />

at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> trial period.<br />
