ADA MEETING<br />

Report <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ADA<br />

Summer Scientific Meet<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

Sheffield, June 2007<br />

<strong>The</strong> Council meet<strong>in</strong>g was held<br />

on 14 June 2007.<br />

<strong>The</strong> poor attendance at recent<br />

meet<strong>in</strong>gs was discussed, along<br />

with <strong>the</strong> possible need to realign<br />

<strong>the</strong> Association and <strong>the</strong> idea<br />

<strong>of</strong> closer cooperation with <strong>the</strong><br />

Dental Sedation Teachers Group<br />

(DSTG). O<strong>the</strong>r suggestions were<br />

to send questionnaires to <strong>the</strong> membership, rename <strong>the</strong><br />

Association, and <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>ile <strong>of</strong> ADA with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

medical and dental pr<strong>of</strong>essions, with <strong>in</strong>creased publicity<br />

<strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Annual Scientific Meet<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

<strong>The</strong> 2007 Scientific Meet<strong>in</strong>g was organised by Dr Ken<br />

Ruiz and held at <strong>the</strong> Hilton Sheffield hotel. Invited<br />

speakers were followed by a session <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> presentation<br />

<strong>of</strong> free papers. Pr<strong>of</strong>essor I. Brooke gave a fasc<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g talk<br />

on <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> and advances <strong>in</strong> dental implant<br />

technology, and this was followed by ano<strong>the</strong>r scholarly<br />

lecture from Pr<strong>of</strong>essor P. Rob<strong>in</strong>son on dental appearance.<br />

Both speakers illustrated how expert cl<strong>in</strong>ical management<br />

can be advanced with <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> imag<strong>in</strong>g technology,<br />

and how advances <strong>in</strong> bio-medical eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g will open<br />

fur<strong>the</strong>r avenues <strong>for</strong> dentistry. Mr R. Croscher and Dr<br />

J. McDonough from Ro<strong>the</strong>rham demonstrated how<br />

major oro-maxill<strong>of</strong>acial surgery has developed, and what<br />

challenges this presents <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> dental anaes<strong>the</strong>tist.<br />

<strong>The</strong> second session provided an<br />

<strong>in</strong>vestigation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> management<br />

<strong>of</strong> dental fear by Mr J. Davis, a<br />

behavioural psychologist, and<br />

dental pa<strong>in</strong> by Dr Loescher, which<br />

outl<strong>in</strong>ed strategies and <strong>the</strong>ory to<br />

help patients who present with<br />

<strong>the</strong>se problems.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Coulthard from<br />

Manchester spoke about <strong>the</strong> DSTG and education issues,<br />

and on Day 2 Dr R. Muirhead gave an <strong>in</strong>sight <strong>in</strong>to IT<br />

s<strong>of</strong>tware <strong>in</strong> dentistry.<br />

A session with free papers was well supported, and some<br />

controversial work was presented concern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong><br />

multi-drug sedation <strong>for</strong> dentistry. As usual, <strong>the</strong>re was<br />

lively discussion from <strong>the</strong> delegates – one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> strengths<br />

<strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional societies where views are aired by those at<br />

<strong>the</strong> coal face <strong>of</strong> sedation and anaes<strong>the</strong>sia <strong>for</strong> dentistry.<br />

ADA seeks to promote <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> all areas where dentists<br />

and anaes<strong>the</strong>tists have a common pr<strong>of</strong>essional <strong>in</strong>terest.<br />

We look <strong>for</strong>ward to see<strong>in</strong>g members <strong>of</strong> ADA and SAAD<br />

at <strong>the</strong> jo<strong>in</strong>t meet<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> DSTG <strong>in</strong> Manchester on<br />

9–10 May 2008. <br />
