FOR THE LOVE OF CINEMA!.. It all started with this love. A couple of people in love with cinema came together; then others joined them. The love of cinema turned into Eskişehir Film Festival, and the festival turned into a passion… Film festivals start with great enthusiasm. In some cases the enthusiasm fades away after a few years; and in some cases the festival gains an institutional identity and challenges the years. The existence of a specific identity and purpose, the excellence of technical conditions, a selective program, an effective organization, a serious team, sufficient budget, and the passion of cinema in the hearts of team members… These all turn a festival into a real joy of cinema. What makes Eskişehir Film Festival distinctive among other festivals held in Turkey is its “university” identity. We have the well-deserved pride of organizing an international film festival for thirteen years with a team composed of academic staff and university students. In line with our identity, we always have the responsibility of being a university festival in all components and stages from organization of the program to screenings, talks with filmmakers and actors to master classes. The purpose of the festival has been clear since the beginning: to contribute to the development and spread of film culture, to provide an environment stimulating the creativity of young people, to award people who think, research and produce in the field of cinema, and to dignify people who dedicate their lives to cinema… And to do all these under the safe roof of Anadolu University freely without the restraining or binding pressure of any institution... Every year about ten thousand audience, and in twelve years over one hundred thousand audience participated in the festival and watched films. We are very happy if we are able to light a fire of cinema in the hearts of even only a few participants. Eskişehir Film Festival does not have a big budget, or glossy ceremonies with national or international stars, or firework shows. However, it has everything expected from a high-quality festival and an added value: “team spirit”. The team spirit, which emerges when people believing in their work come together, makes us stronger and gets younger as it gains experience. Our students who contributed to the festival during screenings in previous years have entered the kitchen of the festival this year. What did they do? The design and typesetting of this book, festival poster, promotion film, website, sponsoring interviews… sleepless nights, returning home early in the morning… They had to spare time for all these while taking classes or examinations. Mesut, Asya, Duygu, Sedef, Can, Mert, Sinan, Kerim, Ege, Berkay, Çağrı, Elif, Hüseyin, Gizem, Candaş, Deniz… They used all their energy and creativity at all stages of the festival. We are proud of them and sure that their success in the organization of this festival is an indicator of what they can do after graduation. I do not know if other festivals work with such a team whose members come together with the love of cinema and overcome all difficulties to create a festival. Maybe this is the old-fashioned style. Now festivals are organized by professionals. However, what makes Eskişehir Film Festival special is this style, creating a warmness and enthusiasm that you probably cannot find in other festivals. Festivals still attract audience in an age when it is possible to access any film through the Internet. This must be because of the need for festivals. Festivals make us live the feeling of belonging and sharing in a world where we have almost forgotten to live together and have shared dreams, and link us to each other with invisible bonds. Sinema Anadolu, the main venue of the festival, is to welcome us to establish these bonds. Although people coming together in front of Sinema Anadolu do not know each other, they are aware of what they share. Our special thanks to Prof. Dr. Davut Aydın, the Rector of Anadolu University, and to Prof. Dr. Naci Gündoğan, the Vice Rector, for their support to Anadolu University International Eskişehir Film Festival. We would like to thank to jury members of Contribution to Cinema Culture Competition; directors, actors and members of the media participating in the festival; and all friends contributing to the festival. We wish that the thirteenth year of the festival will be full of unforgettable memories…
