Join us on Sunday, April 26, 2009 for
your next Minnesota Ironman Ride
experience. Being our 43rd year, it
remains a great Minnesota riding
tradition, and a wonderful celebration
for many TCBC members.
This winter has given us good snow for
skiers, cold temps, bad ice for biking
but always the anticipation to start our
riding as soon as we can. We have
called the Minnesota Ironman Ride the
season kickoff to the bike season. TCBC
will be there with an exhibit booth,
loads of riders, ride marshals, and
many volunteers.
LAB's 2008 Bicycle Clubs
of the Year!
By Mary Derks
Great News!!! The League of American
Bicyclists (LAB) recently named TCBC
as one of their 2008 Bicycle Clubs of
the Year, specifically citing us as having
"one of the most extensive and wellrun
ride programs in the country and
one of the most informative websites
around!" See press release below. This
accomplishment will be announced in
their e-news and in the January/
February edition of American Bicyclist.
TCBC's Marketing & Sponsorship
Committee followed up with a press
release to local media and cycling
organizations to announce this
wonderful news as well.
In talking with LAB, one of their
upcoming publications will also be
By Mary Derks
“TCBC is one of LAB’s 2008 Bicycle
Clubs of the Year!” WOW, what an
honor for us! In a way I couldn’t
believe it when I first heard the news,
but in many more ways I COULD
believe it, especially when I stopped to
think about all that TCBC has to offer!
While there are many other bike clubs
out there, very few are as unique as
ours. One of the reasons we were
chosen for this award was due to our
“extensive and well-run ride program.”
What a benefit for Twin Cities residents
to have so many great rides to choose
highlighting TCBC's Weekend on
Wheels event to be held in conjunction
with the LAB Rally this summer. It will
also include a story about our club
based on a phone interview I did with
them in early February. We're certainly
getting plenty of positive press lately,
which is great!
Thank you for everything that each
one of you has done over the years to
make TCBC the great club that it is,
which is now being recognized
nationally. What an awesome
accomplishment this is for us!!!
rides, to A-level century rides and
everything in between!
For me, I enjoyed having so many great
riding opportunities this past season.
A year ago in January, I knew I would
be doing the Bicycle Tour of Colorado
(BTC) in June. Knowing that this was
going to be a challenging tour (I had
done the ride a few years prior, so I
knew what I was in for), I set out to
train early to be prepared for the ride.
I’m not a fan of riding by myself, so
fortunately there were several winter
OUR CLUB The Twin Cities Bicycling
Club (TCBC) is the Twin Cities’ largest
recreational cycling club. We typically
appeal to adult, intermediate cyclists
who like group riding but don’t race.
We ride mostly on low-traffic roads
and use maps. We generally don’t
mark our routes or sag our rides. Please
use the ride key to choose rides suited
to your abilities.
HELMETS: Must be properly worn and
fastened by everyone on all TCBC rides
and must be ANSI or Snell-approved.
TOOLS: Carry these on your bike: tire
levers, a pump, spare tube, patch kit.
WATER: You should drink water
before you ride, and carry water with
you on the ride, drinking frequently.
RIDE DESCRIPTIONS on the TCBC web
site or in the TCBC Activity News give
important details about rides. Be sure
to check these descriptions carefully.
They may list special situations or
conditions that apply to a ride, and
they are the most accurate description
of TCBC rides.
AVERAGE SPEEDS The speeds listed
in the ride key are average speeds
maintained for the entire ride, not
the minimum or maximum speeds.
To maintain the average ride speed,
riders will ride far faster and far slower
at times. While not required, a cyclecomputer
is helpful to judge average
speed. In some situations, leaders may
feel the conditions justify a slower
average minimum speed.
FASTER OR SLOWER RIDERS or self–
sufficient riders are welcome on
all daylight rides, but the type and
degree of leader support depends on
the ride type.
RIDE LENGTH Be sure to check the
ride description on the TCBC web site
or Activity News for the distance of the
ride. There may be longer or shorter
rides of any ride type. Ride length is
AT THE RIDE START: Arrive early and
allow time to get yourself and your
equipment ready, sign the registration
sheet, and (if you are not a member)
pay the leader the trip fees. All bike
trips list the time the trip actually
departs from the start. There will be a
briefing by the leader.
DAY TRIP FEES: NO CHARGE for TCBC
members & families, $2.00 for nonmembers,
$4.00 for each non-member
family. Pre-registration isn’t necessary
unless stated.
MOUNTAIN BIKE (MB) RIDES
Mountain bikes are required for MB
rides. Protective glasses are highly
recommended. MB rides may require
more protective clothes. Muddy
not necessarily the same for the same
ride types.
LEADER SPEED Leaders may choose
to ride slower than the Minimum
Average Riding Speed on any ride.
Leaders may choose to ride faster than
the Average Riding Speed on all A and
A/B Rides.
LEADER SUPPORT will be available
only to those who are riding at or
above the minimum average riding
speed on B and B/C rides. Leader
support will be available to all riders
on C rides.
terrain may be common. There will
probably be NO water available, so
bring two full bottles. Experienced
TCBC road riders new to mountain
biking should select MB rides at
least one Ride Type lower than they
normally ride “on-road.”
LET'S RIDE!!
BIKE TRAILS AND ROUTES
by Doug Nelson
BIKE BRIDGE DEMOLISHED: A bike/
pedestrian bridge over I-94 in St. Paul
near Hamline Avenue was closed and
demolished recently when an
inspection found it unsafe. A
replacement bridge is expected by
fall. (Cindy Hanson led one route
using this bridge -- which your editor
had never biked before.)
STILLWATER BRIDGES: Your editor
attended a MN/DOT Open House
recently. Plans were shown for
preserving and renovating the
Stillwater Lift Bridge for biking/
pedestrian use only after the new
Hwy 36 bridge across the river is
completed, which won’t be till at least
2013. The old bridge will have a 6-foot
walkway on each side, with 5-foot
bike lanes going in each direction in
the middle of the bridge. A tender will
still be needed to control traffic and
move the bridge occasionally so boats
can get through. A Loop Trail will
cross the old bridge, follow the old
Hwy. 35 corridor up the hill in WI, then
work south and join a bikeway across
the new bridge, then follow a trail
north to Stillwater. (Sorry gang, plans
are to remove the arduous County E
hill -- no road to connect it to.)
VICTORY: When the Lafayette Bridge
over the Mississippi is replaced (Hwy.
52 just east of downtown St. Paul),
there WILL be bike/ped access built
into the crossing. (Steve Scholl)
NINE MILE COMING: The longdiscussed
Nine Mile Creek Regional
Trail is being planned to run along the
water or parallel it for 17 miles from
Hopkins through Edina and Richfield.
(The route is drawn on the 2008 Three
Rivers Park District Guide to Parks and
Trails map.) The first segment will be
built this year, following the creek
from downtown Hopkins eastward
under 169 to Londonderry Road on
Edina’s west border. Routes in Edina
are still being discussed and probably
won’t start for a few years. Some work
will be done this year in Richfield,
using 75th and 76th Streets for the
trail as those roads are rebuilt with
new sewer lines.
NEW TRAIL POSSIBILITY: The old
railroad corridor over the Minnesota
River between Scott and Carver
Counties needs to be dealt with by
Union Pacific. The five-mile segment
runs basically from the Renaissance
Festival property near Shakopee
across the river into Carver and then
into Chaska. A 2007 derailment
caused one of the bridges to collapse.
Much money and work would be
needed to make it safe for public use.
My sincerest gratitude:
I'd like to thank the many people of
TCBC who have given me support and
encouragement during the last year. It
was a tough one. During times like
these, when you are unable to join
your comrades for long periods, you
feel disconnected and it's difficult to
come back. I'm looking forward to
getting back on Pearl and once again
joining my friends who have kept me
motivated. Hopefully I can pay it
forward someday! -Susie Anderson
DAVID GEPNER was highlighted plus a
photo in the recent AARP BULLETIN
and was quoted: “You get to know
your neighbors when you’re out
walking or biking. You don’t feel so
isolated in your home.”
MINNESOTA TRAFFIC STATS: Less
people died in our roads in 2008 than
any year since the 1940’s. Higher gas
prices probably meant motorists were
driving less and more slowly. There
were 4 bicyclists killed in Minnesota in
2007 and 12 last year.
(The items below were omitted from
the last issue.)
TCBC ANNUAL MEETING NEWS: The
four new Board members elected in
November were Richard Franco, Cindy
Hanson, Patt Seleen, and Jack
Uttermark. Laurie Holm was reelected.
(Since then, the Board has
selected Mary Derks to begin her
second year as President, Patt Seleen
as Vice President, and Laurie as
Secretary.) The meeting had around
140 attending, our largest ever. Was
the free dinner a factor or what?
COMFORTABLY PASSED: The Clean
Water, Land, and Legacy Amendment
to the Minnesota Constitution did pass
with 58 percent of the vote. This will
provide millions of dollars to parks and
trails in particular, if the economy and
the state budget will make that
possible.
LAB LIST OF THE BEST BICYCLING
STATES IN THE U.S. has Washington
first, Wisconsin second, and Minnesota
fifth. 70 factors were evaluated. Our
League of American Bicyclists listing
included: “... Minnesota further strives
to protect and promote cyclists
through its model Share the Road
campaign. The state also has a policy
requiring bike parking at state
buildings, as well as state funding for
the installation of bike racks.”
appreciated!
Davenport, the walleye and the
catfish share a crown with proponents
for each knowing full well the
ignorance of those other guys. At
least that is how it was at the time of
this story and a bicycle trip my
brother and I took from Lake Itasca to
Memphis, Tennessee.
Before staying overnight at my
brother’s house in Rock Island,
Illinois, across the river from
Davenport, my brother, always the
professor, thought it best we should
ride to the visitor center located at
Mississippi River Lock and Dam # 15
by the Arsenal Bridge not far from his
home. He said it was a place where
some knowledge regarding the river
might be obtained. I am averse to
learning anything I might not need to
know. I fear the information might
take up space in my mind, a place
with little room to spare. At the
visitor center I was persuaded to
enter upon learning of a free movie in
there. However, the movie started
right out with a question that left me
feeling low. I could tell it was going
to be an informational movie. In a
very deep voice, the moderator
inquired, “Have you ever thought of
the Mississippi River as a highway?”
Well no, in my whole life I had not. I
recalled that my brother had once
ridden his bicycle into the Cannon
River, so I asked him if he had ever
thought of the Mississippi River as a
highway, and said, “No.” In that view I
thought there might be some safety,
even though the moderator said
otherwise. He implied that we had
missed the truck when it came to
thinking about the river. Do you
know how much grain a barge will
hold? Neither do I, but the moderator
knew the answer to that one and to
all the rest of his own questions as
well. My brother said it was
interesting, which was true, but he
has more room for the information
than I do so he was less worried
about there being too much of it.
The next morning, my brother took
charge of our routing as the area was
DAVENPORT
more familiar to him. He said the
day’s ride would be about 100 miles,
not very hilly, and that we would be
staying overnight downriver in
Muscatine, Iowa. We left his house
riding north. “Is it not south we are
riding down the Mississippi?” I
inquired. He said we must first cross
the river into Iowa by riding north, an
assertion which aroused some
suspicion in me when I saw the visitor
center coming into view again.
However, my brother went right up
onto the Arsenal Bridge. I thought we
were going to be getting away from
there, until his bicycle pump escaped
from its bracket and jumped off the
bridge. Like two cats, we were at the
railing to see where it went. My
brother saw it first because he had
looked down. Then we both saw it
lying in the water below the bridge.
It was floating in the lock actually,
which was fortunate, as the lock had
an attendant and, so far as we knew,
the Mississippi River did not.
We went down off the bridge to the
lock and told the attendant to give us
back our pump. He tried to act as if
he didn’t have it, but when we
pointed out our pump in his lock, we
had him dead to rights and he knew
it, or at least we thought he should
know it. He did finally go get a pole
with a hook on it like a metal
shepherd’s staff only much longer
with a way bigger hook. Then he
started trying to fish the pump out of
the lock. I would have to say, he
wasn’t very good at it. He was making
me think, “Who in the world hired this
guy for this job?” He seemed to have
no talent for getting bicycle pumps
out of the lock. He had picked the
wrong tool to start with, and he was
just chasing the pump around in the
water. I thought some of pushing him
in and then offering to pull him out if
he would grab our pump and not let
go, but I wasn’t sure he would know
how to do that either. I could tell that
he lacked experience. He said, “With
most people, their bicycle pumps
don’t come here,” or some such
excuse as that.
Well finally, the pump handle did
catch precariously on the end of the
hook, and he began to raise it up, but
then he dropped it back into the lock.
We were saying it would be better to
bring it up within reach so we could
grab it. We pointed out that it was
starting to ride low in the water. The
handle did catch again, and he did
follow our advice, so we were able to
snatch the pump back from him at
last. He made no apology for the time
he had taken to do his job, but we
said “thank you” anyway, having been
born and raised in Minnesota.
The very first bridge across the
Mississippi River had been built where
the Arsenal Bridge now stands, so the
Rock Island Line from Chicago could
cross the river and continue westward.
Like the railroad before us, we crossed
a bridge at that same location and
continued westward on our trip down
the Mississippi River. The direction still
didn’t seem right to me, but my
brother had led us across the Arsenal
Bridge to Davenport, so I had reason to
believe he knew what he was doing,
which did not prove too true; but if you
think I was going to look at my map
when I had not yet been dropped,
then you don’t know me.
have more TCBC rides in your area or
more rides tuned to your ability? Or
rides on a certain day of the week or
time of day? Or rides that are centered
around a social activity or an event?
Then consider becoming a TCBC ride
leader. The array of rides offered by
Spinning with "Virtual Reality" DVDs
In the dark, cold days of the new year,
it is difficult to get out on the icy roads
regularly for all but the hardiest, most
dedicated cyclists. So how to stay in
some sort of shape? Some folks go out
and cross-country ski. Personally, I
have knee issues that keep me off skis
most of the time.
For the last four winters I participated
in a spinning class. This kept me in
shape through the winter but was
inconvenient (I had to go to a gym
where the class took place) and hard
on my wallet. Generally I would only
HERE IS A SCREEN SHOT OF THE "VIRTUAL REALITY" RIDE
REALITY TRAINING
get in two sessions a week.
This winter I thought I'd try something
different. I already had a fluid trainer
that I had bought a few years ago but
never used too much. (What's the joke
about a stationary bike?) So how to
motivate myself to use it regularly?
I've tried using the trainer while
watching spinning class DVDs in the
past but I was put off by the race
training mindset of these. Lots of
emphasis on POWER and SPRINTING.
Many references to Lance Armstrong
and the Tour De France. Go! Go! Go!
Hey, I want to stay in shape, not give
myself a heart attack! Most TCBC rides I
participate in are A/B or B rides. I am
VISIT US ON THE WEB AT WWW.BOEHMSCYCLE.COM
definitely not a racer or an "A" rider.
In December I got on the internet and
did some searches for DVDs of actual
road biking and found "Virtual Reality"
DVDs by Troy Jacobson. These are
actual three-hour rides out of Madison,
Wisconsin; Tucson, Arizona; and Lake
Placid, New York. These all follow
Ironman routes. I'm not an Ironman
participant but the riding on these
seems to be more my style than the
'Tour de France' type of training. At
around $30 each, these rides came to
about $10 for an hour of riding that I
can use again and again. So I ordered
these and waited for them to arrive.
Once the DVDs arrived in early January,
I got set up on my trainer, with my
heart-rate monitor on, and went to
work. The videos were shot from both
a vehicle that follows the riders as well
as helmet cams. A counter on the
lower left corner of the TV screen
counts down the minutes, starting at
around 3 hrs. On the lower right corner
the setting of gear ratios is shown (for
example: 'small ring, cog 15 tooth').
You change your gearing as you go
along to simulate climbing hills or
when you’re on flat terrain. There is
also a gauge on the upper margin of
the TV screen which indicates level of
effort (70 to 95%).
When the DVD is playing, Troy
Jacobson is yapping in the
background, giving suggestions,
telling you if you're climbing or
descending, coaching you to change
gears, etc. Also, there is a music track
that you can toggle on or off. (I prefer
to keep it on. I don't need to have my
"own" music.) I go for just an hour. In
my old spinning classes we would go
for an hour and a half but I find that
one hour is more than enough. I try to
keep my effort around 80-85% for
most of the hour although I will slow
down a bit (increase pedal cadence) on
the downhill sections.
These rides turned out to be very
satisfactory. Having the scenery pass
by and having other riders in front
helps motivate me much more than if I
were simply watching the news. This is
a lot more satisfactory than watching
cyclists on trainers, looking like they're
about to have coronaries! The visual
cues from following these courses give
me good motivation to keep going at a
good rate on the bike, and I come off
the bike totally soaked with sweat.
Generally, I'm in Zone 4 for my
heartbeat so that's good enough.
My favorite DVD has been the Madison
route. You leave Madison and travel
through Verona and Mt. Horeb,
following the 56-mile Ironman route. I
think I like the route primarily because
it is familiar-looking country. Also,
there are four cyclists on the ride as
opposed to just Troy Jacobson (Lake
Placid and Tucson) so there's a little
more interaction between the
different riders in terms of who's in
front, who's following, passing, etc. But
all the DVDs all fine.
There are similar DVD's from other
sources available on line. I found a
similar series out of Canada that looks
interesting. But the "Virtual Reality"
rides from Troy seem to meet my
needs for now. By email, he tells me
that he intends to continue releasing
more of these outdoor rides in the
future so I expect I'll gradually add to
my collection.
Spinning over the winter will help you
maintain your aerobic capacity and
help you get out on the road this
spring in better shape. In March and
early April you still may have problems
getting out on the road. If that's the
case, spinning on inclement days with
this type of DVD will help.
If you are interested in following up on
these, you can go to http://coachtroy.
com/ or do a Google search. Also,
Twin CitIes Bicycling Safety
By Kellie Cecil-Medina
Mark Stasson & Kelly Hazel
Bicycling is great exercise and lots of
fun. However, accidents do occur. The
Twin Cities Bicycling Club (TCBC)
wanted to learn more about accidents
to help us get a better handle on
safety. For the past two years, we have
asked people who had been involved
in accidents to complete a survey
regarding their experience. Here’s
what you told us.
There were 118 accidents reported.
About half (48%) occurred on a TCBCsponsored
ride and people reported
on accidents as far back as 1996. More
accidents were reported by men (70%)
than by women (30%). Most
respondents indicated that they were
in the 40 to 60-year-old category (65%),
with 21% in the 20 to 40-year-old
category, and 14% in the 60 to 80-yearold
category. When accidents occurred,
most riders were using a road/touring
bicycle (75%), while 14% were on a
hybrid/cross bicycle. The remaining
riders were on a mountain, tandem, or
recumbent bicycle (11%). Most (83%)
reported using clip-in pedals.
The majority of accidents occurred on
A/B category rides and the range of
riding experience varied from 0 to 40
or more years, with more riders
reporting to be in the 0 to 5 year
category than any other.
More riders were involved in situations
involving only a fall (51%), as compared
to a collision (19%) or a combined
collision and fall (30%). The most
common type of accident reported
was a collision with another bicycle.
The second leading reported collision
was with an automobile. Accidents
were also reported to have occurred
with pedestrians, stationary objects,
and even animals. As the table shows,
accidents on TCBC-sponsored rides
were more likely to involve multiple
bicyclists, whereas the non-TCBC
incidents more likely involved motor
vehicles and other situations (e.g.,
pedestrians, animals, and stationary
objects). When motor vehicles were
involved, cars (72%) were reported
more often than were trucks, SUVs, or
vans (28%).
Most accidents occurred during
daylight hours (94%), on days with
little to no cloud cover (83%), and with
pleasant temperatures between 60
and 95 degrees (81%). When
comparing the seasons that accidents
occurred, it was found that 28%
occurred during spring, 63% during
summer, 3% during fall, and 6% during
winter. It is likely that accidents often
occur on nice days in the summer and
spring because that is when we’re
most likely to be out riding.
As you can see in the tables below, the
most often reported reason for an
accident was road/trail hazard. City and
suburban streets were most likely to be
the location of accidents. An openended
question asking for a description
of the accident’s cause elicited a broad
array of explanations. Examples
included: motor vehicle driver
inattention, road conditions (bumps,
loose gravel, bad trail conditions), rider
fatigue, “yahoo” kids, and bad luck.
Also of interest was when the
accidents occurred. For the cases in
which accident timing could be
determined, 36% of these cases
occurred in the last final 20% of the
planned ride, suggesting a possible
fatigue effect (particularly in accidents
involving multiple bicycles).
Whether the incident was a collision,
fall, or both was not strongly related to
the likelihood or severity of injury. The
majority or respondents (90%) said
that they had been injured. In one
sense this is not surprising because
bicycle accidents can be serious due to
the speed and number of riders, but it
could also indicate that potential
respondents consider an accident as
involving injuries. If we find ourselves
on the ground when we didn’t plan it
that way, and we don’t get hurt, we
may not think we had an accident.
info@bikewisconsin.com
A majority of respondents required
medical care for their injuries, though
only a small portion of accidents
required a call to 911. Even fewer
required emergency medical services
transport. Very few riders filed police
reports, mostly in cases involving
motor vehicles. Only 24% said that they
filed a TCBC accident insurance form.
On a positive note, 97% of all
respondents reported wearing a
helmet at the time of the accident.
Let’s make it 100% next time!
In conclusion, a new ride season is
soon on its way. Let’s make it a safe
one by wearing our helmets, being
more aware of other riders, using hand
signals and calling out our intentions
and road hazards, and not
participating in rides that are above
our physical capabilities or experience.
Let’s have a happy, fun, and safe
rides to choose from. I set my mashed
potatoes & gravy aside, got off the
couch and did some winter rides (go
figure!) They weren’t as bad as I
thought! The hardest part was making
the decision to go and then actually
going---the riding was fine! February
brought BikeAZona, which allowed me
to not only enjoy the warm Arizona
sunshine from the seat of my bike
while continuing to train, but also to
spend a week with my sister, her
husband, and their two teenage
daughters who live in the area. Given
that TCBC offers rides every weekend
of the year and most weekdays from
spring to fall, I was able to continue
riding when I got back from Arizona.
June came along and, after many more
rides including the challenging Gears,
Tears, & Fears ride, off I went to
Colorado for the BTC. All I can say after
climbing all those mountain passes is,
“I don’t know how in the world people
train for this ride without the support
of a bike club!” The ride was
challenging, and I just couldn’t even
imagine training on my own or with a
bike club that didn’t offer the variety
and number of rides available to us.
During the summer I found myself on
many day rides, mainly those led by
Herb Schultz and Jack Uttermark. I
really enjoyed the social nature of
those rides and the opportunity to ride
with people I don’t normally ride with
as I mainly do evening A/B rides. I also
took in Don Picard’s Picnic on the
Cannon, a beautiful day ride on the
Cannon Valley Trail. For those of you
who haven’t done that ride, it’s a ‘must
do’! After the ride, Don puts on this
fabulous picnic with food that is not
your average picnic-style fare. For
example, Don marinates the chicken
breasts in garlic and lime juice and, let
me tell you, it is incredible!
In late August, I had the misfortune of
being involved in a bike-car accident.
A couple of weeks afterwards, I felt
ready to get back on the bike, but
wanted to do so at a relaxed pace and
in a small group. Fortunately, Don
Hopkins had an 8 AM Breakfast Ride in
Roseville on that particular day
(Saturday). Given that I was familiar
with the area in case I needed to shortcut
the ride, and thinking there
wouldn’t be very many people on an 8
AM ride in September, I opted to go on
it. It was PERFECT, just PERFECT! A
small group of us showed up and we
enjoyed a nice social ride to R.J. Riches
for breakfast where we had the largest
pancakes I have ever seen. The
waitress told us how enormous they
were when we sat down to order, but
seeing was definitely believing in that
situation! Stuffed to the gills, we got
back on our bikes and leisurely made
our way back home. Given I was a bit
nervous beforehand about doing the
ride, the ride went just fine, thanks to
the nature of the ride and the support
of the other riders.
How lucky we are to have so many
varied riding opportunities to choose
from! I’m sure many of you have had
similar experiences. It’s these kinds of
experiences that have led us to receive
the “2008 Bike Club of the Year” award.
Thank you to all the wonderful
volunteers and members for all they’ve
done to make this happen and for
giving people so many opportunities
to ride! What an honor this is for us!
In addition to our ride program and
website setting us apart as mentioned
by LAB, I believe the desire by our
members to continually grow and
make TCBC the best club out there is
what also sets us apart!!! It’s the
positive, helpful attitude and quest for
excellence by our volunteers and
members who make this club so
outstanding and have enabled us to
receive the 2008 Bike Club of the Year
Award!
TCBC KEY VOLUNTEERS 2007 - 2008
THE BANQUET WAS A GREAT SUCCESS, GOOD FOOD AND FRIENDS AT THE CHATEAU ON MEDICINE LAKE
ANNUAL TCBC RECOGNITION BANQUET
KATIE ANGLE ACCEPTING HER 5TH STRAIGHT TOP MILEAGE AWARD. SHE RODE 207
RIDES AVERAGING 40 MILES PER RIDE WITH A TOTAL OF 8,296 MILES.
RICHARD MILLER ACCEPTING HIS RECORD BREAKING MILEAGE AWARD FOR RIDING
14,593 MILES LAST YEAR. 273 RIDES AVERAGING 53 MILES PER RIDE.
Our annual dinner event rivalled the
previous year with around 140 people
attending on a very cold January
evening in Medicine Lake. Biking and
volunteer awards were presented to
many people and great food was
devoured. Each person who led at
least 4 rides received a black TCBC
briefcase with pockets, trip sheets,
notebook paper, brochures, etc. (We
should be cautious leaving them in
vehicles however, as they resemble
laptops. Maybe they should be left
open.)
Volunteers of the Year were Charles
Breer and Pete Hawkins, both past
presidents of the club and active in
events and efforts far too numerous to
list here.
Leaders of the Year -- voting went
through December by the members.
Best New Leader was Tony Abelson,
the Gas Man. Best C Ride Leader was
Herb Schultz for his 5th straight year
and 6th overall (two of those years he
shared it). We have been selecting 3
Leaders of the Year starting in 2003,
and the recipients were Mike Beadles,
Mary Derks, and Herb Schultz. This was
Mike’s 5th leader award overall, it was
Mary’s 6th (including the last 5 years),
and for Herb it was, remarkably, his
10th overall leader award.
WOMEN’S MILEAGE CHAMPION: Katie
Angle led this race wire to wire and
won her fifth straight mileage award
with 8296 miles, the fourth-highest
total ever. Each of the past five years
Katie has won by at least 900 miles.
This was the first year since 2001 that
she didn’t increase her miles. She did
207 rides and averaged 40 miles per
ride yet again.
MEN’S MILEAGE CHAMPION: Richard
Miller smashed the mileage record
held by Shelby Miller (no relation) by
piling up an amazing 14,593 miles. His
winning margin was a staggering 7500
miles, and up to now the largest
margin for men or women had been
about 4000 miles, Richard did 273 rides
and averaged 53 miles per ride,
probably the highest average ever for
a mileage winner. He joins five other
men who have won twice, and Dave
Carlson won three times. He won in
2007 and was third in 2006.
NEW RIDES RECORD: Special
congratulations to Pam Engebretson
for setting a new TCBC record of 287
rides, breaking Shelby’s record of 277
in 1998. Richard Miller nearly broke the
old record too. Pam finished second in
mileage with 7132.
MORE NOTES: A correction from the
preliminary total -- people on TCBC
rides did around 795,000 miles last
year, a new record of course.... 30 men
and 8 women did more than 100 rides
each..... Ed Hassler, Brian Richie, and
Nancy Welsh had the biggest yearly
gains by each increasing more than
5000 miles over the previous year....
might have been a tough night for
Shelby as he saw both his records fall,
but he seemed okay with it and said he
was surprised it took 10 years for that
to happen..... years over 6000 miles
was a new category I just figured out
the week of the banquet -- only 30
bikers have done that much in a year
and only 9 have done it more than
once.....
Member Recognition
By Richard Franco
The members of TCBC have something
very special and unique that they are
part of. We have a wonderful club with
a diverse membership and a wide
range of cycling experiences and skills
that are brought to the rides and
cycling events that we have. We also
have a great group of people who
volunteer in a variety of ways, from
huge events to our ride leaders who
plan, scout, and map routes and
schedule the about 2000 rides that we
run each year, to the rider who helps
another rider when they have a flat or
a mechanical. The time, effort, and
compassion that it takes by doing
everything from being a ride leader to
a volunteer on one of our big events to
just being a good fellow rider is what
makes this club as great as it is.
Maybe you have seen on page two of
the TCBC newsletter there is an area
called the Recognition Corner. Do you
know someone who led an especially
great ride? Helped another rider? Did
something above and beyond or
exceptional?
Well, here is an opportunity to give
those people the recognition they
deserve for their actions.
If there is someone who has done
something special that you would like
to nominate to appear in the
Recognition Corner, please submit
your nomination to HYPERLINK
