<strong>TCBC</strong> KEY VOLUNTEERS 2007 - <strong>2008</strong><br />
THE BANQUET WAS A GREAT SUCCESS, GOOD FOOD AND FRIENDS AT THE CHATEAU ON MEDICINE LAKE<br />
ANNUAL <strong>TCBC</strong> RECOGNITION BANQUET<br />
KATIE ANGLE ACCEPTING HER 5TH STRAIGHT TOP MILEAGE AWARD. SHE RODE 207<br />
RIDES AVERAGING 40 MILES PER RIDE WITH A TOTAL OF 8,296 MILES.<br />
RICHARD MILLER ACCEPTING HIS RECORD BREAKING MILEAGE AWARD FOR RIDING<br />
14,593 MILES LAST YEAR. 273 RIDES AVERAGING 53 MILES PER RIDE.<br />
Our annual dinner event rivalled <strong>the</strong><br />
previous year with around 140 people<br />
attending on a very cold January<br />
evening in Medicine Lake. Biking and<br />
volunteer awards were presented to<br />
many people and great food was<br />
devoured. Each person who led at<br />
least 4 rides received a black <strong>TCBC</strong><br />
briefcase with pockets, trip sheets,<br />
notebook paper, brochures, etc. (We<br />
should be cautious leaving <strong>the</strong>m in<br />
vehicles however, as <strong>the</strong>y resemble<br />
laptops. Maybe <strong>the</strong>y should be left<br />
open.)<br />
Volunteers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Year</strong> were Charles<br />
Breer and Pete Hawkins, both past<br />
presidents <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> club and active in<br />
events and efforts far too numerous to<br />
list here.<br />
Leaders <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Year</strong> -- voting went<br />
through December by <strong>the</strong> members.<br />
Best New Leader was Tony Abelson,<br />
<strong>the</strong> Gas Man. Best C Ride Leader was<br />
Herb Schultz for his 5th straight year<br />
and 6th overall (two <strong>of</strong> those years he<br />
shared it). We have been selecting 3<br />
Leaders <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Year</strong> starting in 2003,<br />
and <strong>the</strong> recipients were Mike Beadles,<br />
Mary Derks, and Herb Schultz. This was<br />
Mike’s 5th leader award overall, it was<br />
Mary’s 6th (including <strong>the</strong> last 5 years),<br />
and for Herb it was, remarkably, his<br />
10th overall leader award.<br />
WOMEN’S MILEAGE CHAMPION: Katie<br />
Angle led this race wire to wire and<br />
won her fifth straight mileage award<br />
with 8296 miles, <strong>the</strong> fourth-highest<br />
total ever. Each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> past five years<br />
Katie has won by at least 900 miles.<br />
This was <strong>the</strong> first year since 2001 that<br />
she didn’t increase her miles. She did<br />
207 rides and averaged 40 miles per<br />
ride yet again.<br />
MEN’S MILEAGE CHAMPION: Richard<br />
Miller smashed <strong>the</strong> mileage record<br />
held by Shelby Miller (no relation) by<br />
piling up an amazing 14,593 miles. His<br />
winning margin was a staggering 7500<br />
miles, and up to now <strong>the</strong> largest<br />
margin for men or women had been<br />
about 4000 miles, Richard did 273 rides<br />
and averaged 53 miles per ride,<br />
probably <strong>the</strong> highest average ever for<br />
a mileage winner. He joins five o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
men who have won twice, and Dave<br />
Carlson won three times. He won in<br />
2007 and was third in 2006.<br />
NEW RIDES RECORD: Special<br />
congratulations to Pam Engebretson<br />
for setting a new <strong>TCBC</strong> record <strong>of</strong> 287<br />
rides, breaking Shelby’s record <strong>of</strong> 277<br />
in 1998. Richard Miller nearly broke <strong>the</strong><br />
old record too. Pam finished second in<br />
mileage with 7132.<br />
MORE NOTES: A correction from <strong>the</strong><br />
preliminary total -- people on <strong>TCBC</strong><br />
rides did around 795,000 miles last<br />
year, a new record <strong>of</strong> course.... 30 men<br />
and 8 women did more than 100 rides<br />
each..... Ed Hassler, Brian Richie, and<br />
Nancy Welsh had <strong>the</strong> biggest yearly<br />
gains by each increasing more than<br />
5000 miles over <strong>the</strong> previous year....<br />
might have been a tough night for<br />
Shelby as he saw both his records fall,<br />
but he seemed okay with it and said he<br />
was surprised it took 10 years for that<br />
to happen..... years over 6000 miles<br />
was a new category I just figured out<br />
<strong>the</strong> week <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> banquet -- only 30<br />
bikers have d<strong>one</strong> that much in a year<br />
and only 9 have d<strong>one</strong> it more than<br />
once.....<br />
