EDITORIAL
Circus is not only about animals as is the preconceived notion. They were a small part
of the troupe. I had the opportunity of going to a circus, the Bombay circus in New Delhi.
I remember being a child when I last saw one. It was a week day and an evening show.
There were about 15 people in the 200 rupees and 300 rupees tickets while the 50
rupees chairs were filled with about 75 people. It was a really sad sight to see the
sparsely populated tent which had been lit up really well.
The performers wore a cheerful smile on their faces while performing their acts. Their
costumes were bright. Though one could see the hope for a more lively audience, to
cheer them up, in the eyes of every artist. I was an audience to the skills displayed by
trapeze artists, jugglers with hats, balls, rings and wrestlers showing their might. I
witnessed the brave yet frightening men on their motorbikes going round and round in
opposite directions inside a huge metal globe .They risked their lives to entertain a
small crowd. A lot of questions arose in me. There was a time circus had their heyday.
Grounds used to be packed with crowd. The shows were houseful – but today clearly it
is a dying art. With diversity in the entertainment industry, circus hardly seems to be an
attractive feature.
Many awards are given by the government – state as well as central – to people who perform well in arts like cinema,
music, dance, etc. These circus performers, right from the acrobats to the jokers, are talented artists who entertain
us but do not receive their due recognition. It is really expensive to run a circus on which depends the livelihood of a
huge troupe. The income generated is meagre and insufficient as the number of viewers has decreased. At this rate,
sooner or later there will come a day when circus will become history and the future generations will only learn about
it from books and movies.
The shining stars of the circus with our students.
Our students also met some of the artists after the show and interviewed them.
Student: May I know your name please?
Artist: FRANKY.
Student: Thank you. Are you from India?
Artist: No, I am from Tanzania, South Africa.
Student: For how long have you been working as a gymnast?
Artist: Five years.
Student: Why did you opt for gymnastics?
Artist: I love gymnastics. It is my passion since childhood. I used to practice with the street boys and worked hard on my
hobby. I took no special training.
Student: At what age did you start working in the circus shows?
Artist: At the age of nineteen years.
Student: Is it your part time job or a full time profession?
Artist: A full time profession.
Student: Do you get enough salary to fulfill the basic needs of your family?
Artist: Our salary depends on the quality of our work and the number of spectators. Hence, our salary ranges from
audience to audience.
Student: How many hours do you practice daily?
Artist: 3-4 hours every morning.
Student: Don't you think this performing art is dying out with time?
Artist: To some extent yes! There are still such people who like watching these live shows, but the number is declining
slowly. Of course there is less recognition.
Student: Where do you belong to?(another artist)
Artist: I belong to Nepal.
Student: At what age did you start your profession?
Artist: I was nine years old when I started practicing. Even my parents were involved in it, therefore, I had to come here.
Student: Do you think the money you get is sufficient?
Artist: Yes, it is sufficient for my livelihood.
Student: What are your views about this profession?
Artist: Not many people are interested in joining it. But yes, we are doing efforts to improve it so that more and more
people can come and enjoy circus.
CELEBRA TIONS
DUSSEHRA AND DIW ALI CELEBRA TED
The students of class IV of our school enacted the Ramayana during the Dussehra and Diwali celebrations in the school.
Around 120 students of class IV presented an English adaptation of the epic Ramayana with a lot of excitement and
enthusiasm. An hour long show was put in front of the primary students of the school with the motive of making them aware of
the importance and significance of two important festivals of our country –Dussehra and Diwali. It was a step taken to bring
the students closer to the varied culture of the country.
The play showed the important parts of the ancient Sanskrit epic, the Ramayana .The play began with the Hindu sage
Valmiki, who penned down the epic ,being portrayed as the narrator of the play. The play took the students through a journey
in history from the time when Lord Rama got married to Sita to the victorious return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after fourteen
years of exile. The play also incorporated two dances, one –a classical Indian dance-the Bharatnatyam, shown in Ravana's
courtroom and the second being the 'Diya Dance' portraying happiness and celebration after the victory of good over evil.
A TRIBUTE TO MAHATMA GANDHI
Gandhi Jayanti was celebrated with great enthusiasm in our school by the young artists of class IV. Mahatma Gandhi, the
father of our nation , promoted handicraft and the three H's -Heart, Head and Hand. Following his footsteps, our students
crafted beautiful and marvellous wall-hangings, photo frames, pencil stands, etc. from non-synthetic materials such as
jute, wood and other re-usable materials. This 'Best out of Waste' activity held on 1 October 2012, helped in bringing out
many stupefying masterpieces.
Almost all the countries of the world have their
specific folk music and dance which proves to
be a wonderful way of expression of their
community and traditions. To help our students
imbibe such culture, our school organized an
event – 'Folk Dances From Across The World'
on 5 October 2012. The students of class I put
forth dances of various countries like Egypt,
Russia, China, Turkey, Hawaii, Malaysia and
Saudi Arabia. Dressed up in colourful attire, the
students danced with great enthusiasm and
mesmerized the audience. The parents were
spellbound by the perfect performances of their
delicate darlings as they looked vibrant and
stunning in their wonderful costumes. The
event was a huge success as our little dancers
reminded the audience that life is not just about
getting through the storms, but about dancing
in the rain.
MEDIA CLUB ACTIVITIES
Life Media Club of our school drafted a newspaper in the month of September 2012. The students had put in a lot of hard
work and creative efforts to gather information about national and international news. Moreover, activities conducted in our
school were mentioned in the newspaper. An effort was made to enhance the knowledge of our students about technology,
health and literature. In the month of October 2012, the student members made posters on burning issues like girl child and
corruption. They depicted the courage shown by Malala, the Pakistani teenager and also depicted the controversy
involving Arvind Kejriwal and Robert Vadra. Efforts were made to sensitize the students and create awareness regarding
corruption and the poor condition of girl child in our society.
The students of LIFE MEDIA CLUB did myriad activities in November. They did sample surveys to better understand the
variety of products that float in the market and how their ads affect the masses. They also closely monitored the brand
placements that are there in the serials and saw how they impact the viewers. The students also made a questionnaire to
check the memory of the people surveyed to reveal the effect of the ads that are endorsed by big names- be it a
sportsperson or an actor. The whole activity was entertaining ,educative and informative .It definitely added to the
knowledge and confidence of the students.
EACH ONE TEACH ONE
11 November, the birthday of Maulana Abul Kalam
Azad, is observed every year as the National
Education Day. He was an eminent educationist, a
great freedom fighter and the first Union Minister of
Education of our country. On this day, the students of
class X and XI of our school reaffirmed their
commitment towards education by becoming a part
of the "Each-One-Teach-One Programme" by
interacting with the illiterate adults working as
sweepers in the school.
The excitement and joy was evident on the faces of
the students and the school sweepers. The students
interacted with their 'adult' students very politely and
patiently, teaching them the basic Number System
and English alphabets. Some of the sweepers were
able to write 3-letter words and even their name in
English. The effort made by the students towards
eradicating illiteracy was quite successful as many
of the sweepers showed inclination and interest
when taught basic mathematical operations and
English words. The students had a wonderful and
unforgettable experience, and will continue their
Spreading literacy and happiness- our young and responsible citizens.
efforts of spreading literacy in the near future.

SPORTS DAY
“The will must be stronger than the skill.” The very spirit of sportsmanship enables the young athletes of our school to put in
their best effort in the field. Sports and games are means of mental and physical growth. During sports we come to learn
many things. We learn how to maintain our mental balance in the midst of hope and despair. They make us learn how to
tackle a difficult situation. Sports also develop a sense of friendliness. The Annual Sports meet held in our school
encouraged many students to build up their interest in games. It was declared open by our Principal, Ms. Sheena Kalenga
and our Vice Principal, Ms. Sabina Shergill on 26 November 2012 and 30 November 2012 for juniors and seniors
respectively. The enthusiastic athletes participated in the track and field events such as 100m flat race, 400m relay race,
lemon 'n' spoon race, etc. and games such as badminton, football, lawn tennis, etc. These games explained students the
concept of teamwork, as teamwork and unselfishness create the backbone of a great team, without them a team cannot
realistically compete.
The cheerful audience, the efficient faculty, the able volunteers and a variety of sports made the event a great success.
Gandhi house bagged the first position, Nehru house stood the second, while Patel house bagged the third position. Our
Principal, Ms. Sheena Kalenga and Vice Principal, Ms. Sabina Shergill bestowed the medals to the winners. The following
VEDIC MATHS WORKSHOP
Patel House-Winners of Badminton.
'Vedic Mathematics' is the name given to the ancient system of mathematics or to be precise, a unique technique of
calculations based on simple rules and principles, with which any mathematical problem - be it arithmetic, algebra,
geometry or trigonometry - can be solved mentally. For many students, the most feared subject is Mathematics. Well to
those, who find Mathematics a scare, they should go for Vedic Mathematics. Some of the most complicated problems can
be solved without holding a pen and a paper. Stuff like square root, cube root and fifth root can be resolved with simple
concepts. Keeping in mind these advantages of Vedic Maths, our school organized a Vedic Maths workshop for the
students of class XI. The workshop was conducted by Mr. Rajesh Mishra from IMS Learning Resources Pvt. Ltd .The
workshop highlighted the need of Vedic mathematics in competitive as well as curriculum examinations. The students
learnt simple mathematical tricks for calculating the squares of numbers, product of two numbers and the square root and
cube root of numbers. The students also learnt how to multiply two and three digit numbers within a few seconds. A small
test was also conducted to check the speed and accuracy of the students in basic calculation areas. The students were
also made aware of the various career options available to them after completing their class XII. All in all, it was a fun and
informative workshop.
KINGDOM OF DREAMS
Our school planned an excursion to the Kingdom
Of Dreams for the students of Classes VI-XI in
the month of October. The students were thrilled
to see a spectacular world of unparalled
imagination which brought to them a blend of
India's culture and heritage. Modern and
traditional India was showcased to the students
in an entertaining format. The students were also
taken to the Nautanki Mahal where 'Jhumroo', a
musical comedy was shown to the students of
classes –VI, IX, X and XI and 'Zangoora- The
Gypsy Prince', the biggest Bollywood show was
shown to the students of classes VII and VIII. The
magic of Indian Cinema came alive in the
stunning and electrifying shows that left the
audience yearning for more. On the whole, the
students had a mesmerizing experience at the
Kingdom of Dreams.
A VISIT TO DENMARK
The students of our school engaged in the AEC-NET Global projects were invited to Herfoelge School, Herfoelge,
Denmark for a Student Exchange Programme. A delegation of 10 students of class X escorted by their teacher coordinator
Ms. Anjali Handa, visited Herfoelge and Copenhagen from 1 October 2012 to 8 October 2012. The main aim of
the exchange programme was to create awareness about inter-cultural similarities and differences between Asian and
European countries, thereby leading to a better understanding and appreciation of one's own culture and nation. This was
achieved through various activities, interactive sessions and creative workshops held at Herfoelge School under the
assistance of the Danish teacher coordinator, Ms. Helene Tind. Our students also learnt about the teaching and learning
methodologies in European schools. The homestay programme of the Indian students with Danish families taught our
students tolerance and discipline, and further developed a sense of mutual respect. The students also got an opportunity
to visit the famous Rosenborg Castle and Treasury, the Arch Museum and Cafe Vivaldi. A canal tour of Copenhagen by
boat was a truly memorable experience. The Exchange programme thus helped in strengthening our bonds with the
people of Denmark.
Our students with their teacher coordinator and their Danish friends.
A DATE WITH TIMES OF INDIA
At times when life takes a turn, it offers things, we might not have imagined of. One such opportunity was provided to St.
Mark’s School by the Times NIE to make the student edition for a day. It was a privilege for our school to be a part of this and
avail this life time chance. The students of our school wrote articles for the prestigious newspaper, which was printed on 31
October 2012. The newspaper was printed on a single day, but the preparations had taken form far before. It was under the
able guidance of our chairperson, Ms. Anjali Aggrawal, that the students and a team of three teachers did this enriching
work. Not only the students who visited the 'Times House' had a novel experience but even for the teachers, it was a great
learning experience. Two students from each branch were selected to represent their school. From our school, Shalu
Gupta and Priyanka Yadav of class XI were selected to be a part of the editorial team along with their teacher Ms. Vaneet.
The fervent students put forth their views regarding the latest technology and the books one must read. They also did live
reporting and covered 'Sandy' the hurricane as the headline. The school made the following sections of the newspaper-
Music, Tech, Travel and Book. It was a marvellous experience to see live how actually journalists work- the fast and
competitive life they live. This success was a result of long hours of hard work by students as well as teachers. Designing
this newspaper was not the art of a single hand, but a collection of different ideas which made this newspaper unique.'
The students of Kesholoy Club accompanied by their teacher incharges Ms.Anjali Handa and Ms. Shruti Sharma,
continued their journey of community service this year by visiting the Jeevan Jyoti Home for the Disabled Children on
October 20, 2012. Run by Missionaries of Charity, the institute is a part of Nirmal Hriday Bhawan, an organization founded
by Mother Teresa in 1950. The home was established to care for children with disabilities; taking pains from feeding them to
educating them. Our students spent some time with these children. They had taken with them packets of chocolates and
sweets as gifts for their newfound friends .They cherished the time spent there and learnt the lesson that life is truly
beautiful and a gift to be cherished.
Lending a helping hand, our students smile with a cause.
traditional printed samples by using wooden blocks and natural colours. Later all of them enjoyed an evening at Chokhi
Dhani where they got a glimpse of traditional Rajasthani entertainment and delectable Rajasthani food. On the third day
