In 2012, the 19th annual walleye tournament will be held on September 29-30. One of North America’s richest walleye tournaments, the Vanity Cup attracts anglers from Western Canada and the United States, with 160 teams competing for almost $150,000 in prizes. For more information, visit www.vanitycup.ca. The Saskatchewan Premier’s Walleye Cup celebrates 25 years in 2012. Launched in 1988, it is the province’s longest running walleye tournament and one of the largest walleye events in Canada. The two-day, live release tournament, which will be held from August 10-11 on the river section of Tobin Lake, hosts 320 fishermen (160 teams) from across North America. Angler success is high and it is not uncommon to pull a record-sized fish from the waters of Tobin Lake. In fact, Tobin Lake is home to the World Walleye Ice Fishing Record (also the Provincial Record Walleye, which has been broken time after time at Tobin Lake – five times consecutively, to be exact). The massive 18.30-lbs. walleye was caught by local priest and fisherman Father Mariusz Zajac in January 2005. The Provincial Live Release Walleye Record stands at 18.06 lbs. and was pulled from Tobin Lake in September 1997. The lake also has the distinction of holding the former Canadian record for northern pike. While fishing is often the main reason for visiting the Nipawin area, other recreational and adventure opportunities are coming into the spotlight and making it a full-featured, four-season destination. The 17th annual Fish for Freedom Ladies-Only Fishing Derby will be held from August 17-18 on Tobin Lake. As Canada’s largest ladies-only fishing event, this tournament benefits local and women’s charities. Evergreen Golf Club Nipawin and District Regional Park Teams consist of two women and a third person to captain the boat (male or female). There is a team limit of 120 teams. The total prize payout for the tournament is $7,775 and first prize is $2,000. For more information, visit www.nipawin.com/fishforfreedom.php. Other fishing tournaments on Tobin Lake include the Shorebird Inn Walleye Championship, which takes place in July, and the Fins n’ Skins, which is held in June. Fins n’ Skins is a two-person team combined fish and golf tournament. The golf portion takes place at Rolling Pines Golf and Country Resort. “It is amazing to see visitors from all over North America here for both the tournaments and recreation,” Rospad said. “The world-class fishing resource of different species, including walleye and northern pike, draw many enthusiastic and return visitors.” “Fishing is definitely one of our main attractions in the Nipawin area. We serve anglers who focus only on fishing, but we also service anglers who are curious about other things they can ‘value-add’ to their trips,” said Kathy Palidwar, owner/manager of Northern Greens Resort, one of the area’s accommodations. “Nipawin offers a variety of tourism attractions yearround,” she said. “All tourists whether local, provincial, or international, have choices and can combine activities and attraction sites.” Many of these activities and attractions can be found within Nipawin and District Regional Park, which is situated on the Saskatchewan River portion of Tobin Lake and approximately two kilometres from Nipawin. The park provides easy access to spectacular fishing and is designed as a family destination with many amenities. A full-service marina with boat rentals (deluxe boats available), fuel, bait, tackle, twin concrete boat launch, filleting house, confectionery, licensed restaurant, and outfitting services can be found at Twin Marine.

We are a one-stop shop for them, so it makes us a convenient and popular place,” said Nicole Jackson, owner of Twin Marine, which was established in 1989. Aurora Houseboats of Tobin Lake is located in the park as well. Book your weekend or week-long houseboat getaway on one of three boats: eight-sleeper, 10-sleeper, or 12-sleeper, the newest addition to the fleet. Aurora Houseboats, which is owned by Tressa Moroz and Curtis Lockwood, also offers river cruises, which can last from one hour to eight hours (private bookings). “The lay of the land is exactly the way it was other than shaping our tees and greens. This makes for a very natural setting amongst the native pines, aspen, and many species of berries and plant life.” Only 25 minutes outside of Nipawin, you can find Pasquia Regional Park Golf Course. This course features nine holes of irrigated fairways and grass greens that begin on the lush prairie and then dive into the wooded Pasquia river valley, making the course a truly unique golf experience. “The river cruises give people a chance to relax on the top deck and enjoy the beautiful scenery,” Moroz said. “The nature here is unbelievable.” The houseboating season runs from mid-May to mid- September. Moroz says that houseboating is the perfect family getaway. In fact, many of their bookings are for special occasions, such as anniversaries and birthdays. “It is about creating lasting memories,” she said. A variety of recreation activities abound at Nipawin and District Regional Park, such as camping, a playground, walking and hiking trails, mini-golf, barnyard zoo, horseshoe pits, stocked trout pond, sprinkler park, Nipawin Swinging Bridge, basketball and volleyball courts, and a beach. Uniquely situated where the forest meets the prairie, Nipawin has garnered a reputation as one of Saskatchewan’s most exciting golf destinations. The area offers three local courses that are both spectacular and challenging. Rated one of the top five public courses in Saskatchewan and one of the top 100 in Canada, Evergreen Golf Club offers 18 holes across rolling evergreen woodland, and is just minutes from downtown Nipawin. New in 2007, nine-hole Rolling Pines Golf and Country Resort is located halfway between Nipawin and Tobin Lake in the scenic boreal forest. Owners Larry and Debbie Arnst say this picturesque and unique course was “shaped by nature.” Aurora Houseboats Nipawin is also an excellent destination for winter travel, with hundreds of kilometres of snowmobile trails in the nearby area, as well as downhill skiing and snowboarding at the nearby Wapiti Valley Ski & Board Resort. Whatever the season, the Nipawin area is vast and has something for everyone to enjoy. Just ask Palidwar. “Imagine reeling in a record walleye in the morning at Tobin Lake, golfing at the Evergreen championship golf course or Rolling Pines or Pasquia Park, sitting at one of the dockside restaurants, then relaxing fireside or winding down at the multiuse facility,” she said.
